  1. Ivy Walls said: "Houston, Cincinnati, Florida, Pittsburgh they will have their call ups and which will be playing for playing time and which will see a surprising star emerge." Remember all the times we lost to rookie pitchers during the Dusty days? The excuse was often something like, 'well, we've never seen this kid before.' That's what frightens me about these got-nothing-to-lose teams.
  2. I didn't pay close attention, but I thought on one of the replays of Pujols' slide into home yesterday, he put his hand on the umpire's (Barrett's) chest during the argument. He didn't push him, but I thought he did make contact. Did anyone else see that and, if so, shouldn't that automatically mean at least three games?
  3. Jose Contreras and Jack Morris? Which one's older?
  4. I saw the name Steve Phillips and I still opened the thread. What an idiot!
  5. Personally, I consider it child abuse to even dress up your kid in a Cub t-shirt or cap, much less take 'em to the bleachers. I've been warned about the dangers of raising my child as a Cubs fan, but that didn't stop me and now he's ruined. He accepts mediocrity willingly and allows his heart to be broken on a regular basis during the summer. Just like his Pops.
  6. I'm hoping that Brewers - Padres series is a showdown for the wild card.
  7. Didn't Len say something like people bought tickets because of these promotions. Come on Len. I'm going. I've always wanted a Padre jersey.
  8. Rob wrote: Does anybody else get the irresistable urge to shove Paul Sullivan into a locker every time they see him? nilodnary wrote: Ugh, not only is Z spending more time on the internet, he must have stolen Rob's password! Nicely done, nilod!
  9. Glancing at recent Sox games during commercials, I've heard Harrelson complain about the "teacup" strike zones with which Sox pitchers have had to contend. Today, in the ninth, when the first pitch to Pierzynski is called a strike, Pierzynski gave the body language to show his disagreement. He's a player; that's okay. But Harrelson complains that Sox pitchers haven't had that pitch called their way all day. Geez, give it a rest. Whenever the Sox hit a rough stretch, he almost invariably whines about what he feels is poor and unbalanced balls-and-strikes calls by the home plate ump. Granted, he does lay some blame at the feet of the Sox players, but he whines more than any other broadcaster I've heard. Harrelson, grab some bench.
  10. So, instead of Z putting whip cream on Pierzynski's face and Pierzynski ripping off Z's eyebrow, Barrett can wake each of 'em up with a punch. I'm lovin' it.
  11. At least I can go to the Card and Sox fans' boards and enjoy their misery.
  12. As someone mentioned earlier, Hendry won't be able to pick up big contracts at the deadline. The team won't be sold 'til after the end of the season, so . . by the time the team is sold and the ownership approved by the other owners, any attractive free agents for 2008 will be gone. Good-bye Z, Barrett, . . . We'll be left to sort through the dregs to fill more holes than we have this season. The one season when the Trib opens the purse strings wide open, Sam Zell slams 'em shut.
  13. Those two deserve each other.
  14. Good thing Ozzie decided to pitch around Texiera and not walk Sammy. Oh, wait. . .
  15. I miss Vince and Lou, although I think very highly of Pat Hughes. As much as I love Ronnie -- he was my favorite player growing up -- I get very irritated that he doesn't keep up-to-date on player movement ('Oh, when did he join the Padres? Oh, really?') and other things. I appreciate his knowledge of how to play the game, but he doesn't express it very well. One thing I do like is his expressions of disappointment when the Cubs make stupid plays or lose a game they should have won. After I hear him "bleeding" over the radio, I can more easily remind myself that it's just a game and tomorrow is a new day. . . isn't it? I liked Harry and Steve, but not Chip and Steve -- too much filling the air with needless chatter. I'm quite happy with Len and Bob. Oh, and for what it's worth, I could not stand Brickhouse's and Hamilton's delivery. And Brickhouse's stories drove me to distraction.
  16. And he commented on how impressed he was with the Mets working on fundamentals in camp. That's a new thought -- should have tried a little of that the last four years, Dusty.
  17. Since it's the Easter weekend, I suspect that they're not selling a lot of tickets. Families will be busy with other stuff.
  18. Bruce, There's a lot of optimism -- even giddyness -- on this board. At this point in the spring, it may be a little early to forecast the season, but are you optimistic about the team's chances this year? Thanks for excellent journalism and for being a friend of this site.
  19. Yeah, it's all good that Prior is throwing well off the mound, but when is he going to begin his towel drills? Doesn't he have to complete those drills before he can pitch in a ST game?
  20. I do hope Dusty gets another job. . . maybe next year in St. Louis
  21. So, Boras thinks D-Mat is worth $100million over six years, since he's a 26-year-old with so much talent. Isn't Boras Z's agent? Open up that checkbook, Mr. Hendry, but, by all means, GET IT DONE!
  22. I don't know how much difference this will make, but another difference: Lou>>>>Dusty Should be smarter game strategy, more enthusiasm, and, maybe???, more attention to basic skills, like baserunning and defense. Is it time for pitchers and catchers to report yet???
  23. bhogg wrote: . .. other than me and my mom, who would want a Sandberg Jersey in southeast arkansas? My guess: Joe Morgan
  24. I nominate Hugh Hollins for that non-foul call on Pippen in the '03 playoffs against the Knicks. Er, sorry. Wrong sport. (I gotta let go of these things. . .)
