  1. When do pitchers and catchers report? (In other words, when is winter over?)
  2. Wouldn't it be great if Cotts became the answer to the following trivia question: What player has won World Series championships with both Chicago teams? Yeah, right. . .
  3. I don't know about "Jap pitchers," but it would have been fun if Harry were still around to say, "Hey, Steve, ya know that Igawa (or Matsuzaka) backwards is pronounced . . . "
  4. A couple people have described Matt Murton as an "above average left fielder." Offensively, yes. But, defensively, he leaves a lot to be desired. I'm tired of seeing him gaze at balls go over his head and wind up as doubles when they should be singles or fly outs. Love his bat, but not his glove.
  5. Mizzou wrote: Yet another reason why defensive stats are virtuously worthless. I believe that in some countries, women who are found to be virtuously worthless can be stoned to death.
  6. GilesBros., Just out of curiosity, have you thought about what picture to put under your name after this week (assuming the dude is let go)? Or will you keep that picture to remind us how bad it used to be?
  7. Even if the Trib sold tomorrow, it would take several months to work things out on the business end and then more time for owners' approval, probably running into at least early next season. We'll have Hendry, et.al., around for a while, I'm afraid, and the new manager -- for better or for worse -- will be in place. By the way, Soul said: "Someone go ahead and correct me if I'm wrong." Do you think you could get my wife or my son to say that?
  8. Let's see. . . "6 out of the last 8; they're winning without DLee, Barrett, and all the other horses; they haven't quit on Dusty; they're beating playoff contenders. Since Dusty's got the team playing well, I think it's only fair that I give him a one-year extension to see what he can do with a healthy team." OOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHH, NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! Also, tonight, Neifi Perez hits an easy flyball to center and Mackowiak drops the ball. Last year, Mackowiak, as a Pirate, would have caught that ball off Perez, then a Cub. Not fair.
  9. Paul Daugherty in the "Cincinnati Enquirer" called Adam Dunn "a DH playing left field" and said he "seem(s) to be in need of hammocks and soft breezes." He also said that the Reds need a closer and a legitimate outfielder. Given all the chatter a couple months ago about picking up Dunn, is there still interest in picking him up in the offseason for, say, Dempster and Jones or Murton? His stats from the Reds' site: A Dunn 144G / 512AB / 94R / 123H / 21 2b / 0 3b / 40HR / 91RBI / 264TB / 102BB / 175SO / 6SB / 0CS / .371OBP / .516SLG / .240AVG
  10. Yes, as of today, it's Macy's, not Field's. Thank goodness there are some traditions on which we can still rely, like no World Series baseball at Wrigley Field. ugh.
  11. Historia, Go back!! Go back before it's too late!! For the sake of the wife and children!!
  12. Veerlander and Schilling? Are you kidding? They weren't even good enough to make the all-star roster. You must have meant Buehrle and Contreras, right?
  13. I'm 55. I can't wait for no stinkin' farm system. I don't want 'em to exhume my body to put a championship t-shirt on me. I want it now. Buy. Buy. Buy.
  14. From the Philadelphia Daily News: "Add the Giants' Felipe Alou to the list of managers who could be fired at the end of the season. Some early speculation on who might replace him includes Cubs broadcaster (and former Diamondbacks manager) Bob Brenly and Braves special assistant (and former Phillies manager) Jim Fregosi." Should we care?
  15. From the Philadelphia Inquirer: "BY THE NUMBERS: 3: Marlins rookie pitchers with at least 10 wins: Scott Olson, Josh Johnson and Ricky Nolasco. That's the first time a team has had three rookies reach double digits in wins since the 1952 Brooklyn Dodgers." Hmmmmmmmmmmmm. . .
  16. Goony, Did you steal a copy of the Cubs' mission statement/goals from Andy's or Jim's office? Or do you just read those two guys like an open book? Your note at the bottom: "Chicago Cubs baseball - just trying to make it respectable." sounds an awful lot like something with which they'd be satisfied.
  17. I understand Hendry is having a press conference tomorrow morning to announce two moves: 1. Neifi Perez sent to the Tigers 2. To take his place on the roster, the re-signing of Jose Macias (good glove, you know)
  18. Hill had better hold 'em. I WILL BE VIOLENT IF I HAVE TO SEE THE DIET MOUNTAIN DEW COMMERCIAL WITH THE SHARK ANOTHER TIME!!!
  19. I love Ronnie, too, and enjoy the interaction with Pat -- keeps the mind off the misery that is happening on the field. Having said that, maybe the Cubs could restrict Ronnie to regular season home games and spring training games, persuading him that this is best for his health. He should also be a semi-regular 7th inning stretch singer/leader. That solves two problems at one time, reducing the long line of incompetent and irrelevant "personalities" who have no affiliation with Cubs baseball. Then, find a better communicator to work with Pat on road games. In any case, Pat and Ron are far superior to the radio folks who work the south side games.
  20. THE UMPIRES!!! Just ask the Hawk! It seems every time I turn on a Sox game, Harrelson and his lil' buddy/sidekick are whining about the umpires squeezin' their pitchers, missing this call or that call. The Sox have not played good ball lately. Can't he say that? I wonder if the umpires are responsible for the break in the BP pipeline, too, and for the troubles in the mideast. I think it's time they gave Harrelson his own statue next to Fisk and Minoso and let him spend his summers on the golf course. What a whiner!
  21. JonMDavis wrote: "I'd ask about what what stats they use to evaluate their especially young players and what they use to project them, what stats they favor more than others, what can and can't be taught at the big league level, etc." Yes, I vote for this question. It should be interesting. By the way, thanks for asking our input.
  22. Noticed on the video that the shortstop handled the double-play ball flawlessly. Too bad he couldn't handle the ball a couple weeks later. Will we ever be that close again?
  23. . . . yesterday. I couldn't believe that most of the park participated in "the wave." It went around at least twice and even my son -- who is now cut out of the will -- took part. I thought I was at the baseball stadium on the south side. Oh, except that they would only "do the wave" if the electronic signs in the park told them to do so -- otherwise, they'd sit on their hands. It was totally out-of-place at Wrigley.
  24. Interesting article from the LA Times re: Mad Dog. He talks a little pitching philosophy and some stuff that I've never seen in the local papers. Pls cut and paste, as I can't create the link. http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-maddux3aug03,1,656497.story?page=1
