  2. from the Houston Chronicle. . . "Heading into the second half of the season, the good folks at STATS Inc. distributed some interesting numbers. Among players with at least 1,000 career at-bats after the All-Star break, Todd Helton's .349 batting average is the highest. According to STATS, Helton is followed by Albert Pujols (.340), Ichiro Suzuki (.326), Derek Jeter (.322), Vladimir Guerrero (.321) and Juan Pierre (.320) among active players." JP heating up for contract time?
  3. I was in and out of the car briefly this afternoon and heard part of something Stone mentioned on the Murph show about the Dodgers being a logical trading partner for the Cubs. He said something about the Cubs having Maddux, Williamson, Ramirez and someone else that would be of interest to the Dodgers. He mentioned Izturis and a several possible prospects that would look good in Cub blue. Not that any trade is going to happen, but did anyone hear Stone's ideas and, if so, what were they? Thanks.
  4. Sure, I'd trade Eyre and Howry to the Sox. I'd even throw in the other 23 guys on the Cubs' ML roster, straight up for their 25.
  5. Red Sox and Blue Jays. I'm surprised how many folks like the Fish! It's taken me decades to stop hating the Mets (after '69) and it's going to take about as long to stop hating the Marlins.
  6. So, who gets his extension first, Neifi or Dusty?

" For the games on 'GN, the camera could pan the crowd with the flashing arrows, like they did for the grand prize game on Bozo's Circus. Then ringmaster Jim (Hendry), wearing his top hat and Ron Santo jersey, could call the winner down and drop the lineup card in bucket no. 6. (For those of you old enough to remember. . . )
  8. Yes, he looks good! Hail to The Grand Marmola!
  9. You know, if Pierre leaves as a free agent, the White Sox will jump all over him and he'll win the comeback player of the year award for them as their 2007 center fielder. Ozzie and JP probably worked well together in Florida.
  10. Hacking Out Machine wrote: "I'd say a larger percentage of the "road" fans are true Cub fans compared to the average home crowd, yeah. There is a plethora of tourists, neighborhood trixies and drunk-by-5 buffoons in your average night game crowd for example. How many of those people are showing up at a Cubs game in, say, Colorado? " A couple years ago, I went to see the Cubs at Coors Field. Actually, it's quite a nice park -- I sat a couple rows below the purple row of seats that span the entire upper deck and mark the "mile high" measurement. That was a 3-HR game by Sammy and there were many other Cubs fans there, although a lot may have been transplants from Chicago.
  11. Well, all I know is that when I go to Wrigley, there's a lot of cheering and reaction to what' happening on the field. When I go to the ball mall near the Ryan -- the last time I went was May of last year, before it attendance improved -- the fans sit on their hands until the "fan-o-meter" tells them to "make some noise." When that sign sturns off, they shut up again. I have noticed that they're noisier now, after the championship. I also notice a lot more clean black hats -- can you say 'bandwagon jumper?' -- around town. I have always chafed at the beergarden tag that the press applies to Wrigley. Geez, it's the difference between a bunch of fans at a ballpark and a bunch of bandwagon jumpers at a baseball stadium.
  12. I suspect that Wood will come back and pitch very well into August and then become the first major leaguer to be hit with bird flu (no, not the St. Louis kind, either). Back in March, I called WGN to see if they were going to do their annual broadcast of "It Happens Every Spring," the movie about the scientist who develops a trick pitch using a "foreign substance." The kid at 'GN who answered was obviously quite young and didn't know what I was talking about. He thought it was a documentary about Wood's and Prior's injuries.
  13. What color bats will they use for prostate cancer awareness? I've been told that this is a bigger killer than breast cancer.
  14. The pitchers who give up the HRs to Bonds that tie and then pass Ruth on the all-time list will be more infamous than Tracy Stallard and Al Downing, guys who gave up record-breaking HRs in the past. This, of course, is because Bonds is so unlikeable and so "pumped." Do you think that, assuming they're still in the game the next time he bats, they'll deliver Bonds a little chin music? Assuming that the game is not played in San Francisco, don't you think that would bring a roar of approval from the crowd and perhaps a little redemption? Do you think the pitchers would have the, uh, gumption to do that?
  15. I'm both drawn to and repelled by the 2003 highlights. 2003 - 2005 were the years when the baseball demons were to be exorcised: 2003 was the year of the Cubs; 2004 was the year of the Red Sox; 2005 was the year of the White Sox. . . . . .except that we dropped the ball (I'm tallkin' to you, Gonzo).
  16. Much as Ronnie annoys me, I still love him -- in a Cub-like way, of course. He usually doesn't know what inning it is, but I do appreciate his love for his team. Today, I had the misfortune of hearing Harrelson and Jackson call the Sox game. Every time I hear them, I get down on my knees and thank the Lord for Len and Bob, Pat and Ron. Heck, I even thought Chip Caray was a hall-of-famer compared to those two clowns in the Sox booth. You can put Harrelson on "mute" -- yes!!!
  17. I've got a couple: MadDog on an all-star ball from Pittsb'gh; Ronnie and Pat; Ryno; a fading ink ball from the Big Red Machine -- not sure what year. My son has Sammy's, Konerko (on a card), Eric Young on a bat, and lots of lesser lights. What he does have that's interesting is an autographed hat with Alfonseca's and Don Baylor's sigs. After Baylor was fired, he was able to get a ball autographed by Alfonseca and Bruce Kimm. I'm trying to get another ball with Alfonseca's sig and then get Dusty to sign it -- maybe that's how we can get rid of him.
  18. I also thought this was great news initially. Then, the Cub -- pessimistic -- side of me wondered if, since Z really likes Chicago, he was canning Boras because Kenny Williams refuses to negotiate with the agent. Is Z just planning ahead? Naaaaaaaaaaaaaah. . . can't be. . .
  19. USSoccer wrote: I really don't wish injury on anyone, but what do you think players and GM's around the league are going to think if ARod breaks his hand after being hit by a pitch, or if Dontrelle Willis blows out his elbow playing for Team USA? Kind of OT, but I remember a story told by Bob Sirott, a local TV guy and long-suffering Cub fan, who was covering 2nd base in a charity softball game. Michael Jordan slid into second while Sirott was holding the ball in his hands. Sirott's teammates screamed at him, asking him why he didn't get in there and tag Jordan out. He replied something like, "Oh, yeah. I can see tomorrow's headline in the sports section: 'Sirott causes Jordan to suffer career-ending knee injury.'" I don't think this World tournament is worth it, either.
  20. Don't like Len and Bob? Well, remeber, things could be worse -- a lot worse. We could have those two clowns from the south side -- Harrelson and Jackson. Ugh.
  21. First, let me say that I wish the 'stros would come back and win four straight; however, I'm resigned to a Sox championship and I think I am accepting it much better than I thought I would. They're a really good team, I must say. When Sox fans see me with my Cubs hat and/or jacket, they smile and ask if I'm supporting the Sox, 'cause we're all Chicagoans. I tell 'em that I support the Sox just as much as they supported the Cubs in '03. That shuts 'em up. What I find amusing is all the crisp new black-and-white hats -- not the championship hats, but the uniform hats -- around town -- bandwagon jumpers. What I don't like is driving down Addison towards my home seeing White Sox flags hanging from porches and flying from cars.
  22. ARod at third, Chico Carrasquel or even Louie Apparicio or Leo Cardenas at short, and Sammy in the OF. But how could they have missed Adolfo Phillips?
  23. I'm pulling for the Astros -- Clemens brings his hometown team a WS ring and then RETIRES! Plus, I get to read a winter's worth of whining and moaning from the "morans" at the stltoday.com forum. As for the Sox, I recognize and appreciate what they've accomplished as a team and I like 'em (Guillen and Pierzynski excepted). I know several baseball-savvy Sox fans for whom I am genuinely happy. It's the other type of Sox fan -- the kind who gets more joy out of a Cubs loss than a White Sox win -- that is annoying. I can't wait for spring training and the first broadcasts of spring games.
  24. First inning pictures of game 5 was kind of humorous: Shot of Phil Garner picking his ear with his index finger and then inspecting what he'd found; they lingered on this shot for at least two seconds. Some idiot in a Sox cap sitting behind home plate waving, grinning and talking on his cell phone -- and they complain about the idiots at Wrigley who do that. . . Berkman standing at second, stroking his chin and talking with Grudz -- discussing Michael Barrett? I'd be quite happy if the Astros won and then defeated the Sox. Then, Clemens will have accomplished his goal -- bring WS rings to his hometown -- and then RETIRE!
  25. I was asked twice today about my Cubs hat: 'You're a big Cubs fan. You're supporting the Sox, aren't you?' I replied that sure, I was supporting the Sox, because Chicago needs a champion, just like I'm sure you supported the Cubs in 2003. That usually shuts 'em up.
