The ability of a GM and his scout staff to have the foresight to know when to sell high on a prospect or young player or keep that player hoping his success will be sustained long term is probably the most difficult task a GM faces. Hendry's and his scouts' failure in this regard is my biggest criticism of his administration.

I don't know if it's reasonable to expect scouts to know exactly which ones will succeed and which ones will fail. I think it's worth holding on to the ones who fail in exchange for the few who succeed, rather than getting 75 cents on the dollar for all of them.

I so wanted to hire Rick Petersen, who utilizes a lot of psychology as a pitching coach, to work one on one with Hill and act as a pitching coordinator throughout the system.

does hendry know there are more than 3 other teams in the major league baseball?

This.

Hey Jim, We get it. You used to work for Andy MacPhail. That doesn't mean every trade has to be with him.

I look at it this way, if Hill figures it out he'll be doing it for the Orioles whom the Cubs will never have to play. So if he'd rather give him away for nothing than see what he has in ST, the Orioles is a good a place to hide him as anywhere.

If true I think this slams the door on any Peavy trade.

I don't think this impacts a Peavy trade in the slightest.

Funny how things change. I thought not trading Hill for Dunn, if offerred, was ludicrous. I posted on this board in '05 or '06 that we should get Aubrey Huff for Hill in a second. Of course in 2007 I looked like a doofus and I thought as much. And now in retrospect that all looks pretty good. Not claiming to have been "right," but I am amazed by how fortunes turn quickly.

Truffle, the cheerleader is beautiful. But is there something else in the picture that this middle-aged guy is missing?

lol, I wondered what she was doing.

As for the trade, I think that Baltimore will be a good landing spot for Hill and a place that will allow him to work through his problems (hopefully he can). As for the PTBNL, if Hill does indeed return to his 07 form (unlikely as it may be), would we be looking at a top 10 type prospect?

I don't think Hill would have to return to his 07 form, for us to get something of value. He really probably just needs to make the Orioles rotation, and do ok for a little bit IMO. But I still don't see the Cubs getting a top 10 prospect even if he does well. I think in the 10-20 range is possible, or a young low level prospect with some decent potential.

Except that job way way way beneath him.

What's he doing instead?

Anyone know what his per 10 minute salary demands would be?

I was just thinking of something similar to this...I'm really becoming of the opinion that there should be no such thing as "untouchable" and I don't think I'd have any concern at all about dealing a guy like Vitters in a deal for a guy like Peavey...or any similar kind of deal.

Yeah. Better than unemployment, right?

This "should have traded them when their value was high" sentiment is silly.

When was Hills value the highest? Start of last year when they needed all the pitching they could get. Why should they have traded him then? When you're a team in need of pitching, you should trade your good young cheap pitcher? Brilliant.

How many guys lose it as fast as Hill has? Its' unfortunate, because nobody ever saw this coming, but is not a sure sign to trade away all future prospects when their value is highest. That's just silly.

Back to Hill. I feel terrible for him because anybody that has ever pitched at any level understands how frustrating this is to him. It's not for a lack of effort, for some reason, inexplicably, you just lose all confidence.

Without options and without Hill showing the slightest glimmer of hope in AFL or Winter ball, there was no reason to believe that anything would have changed during ST when other pitchers need the time to get ready.

There is no blame here, just an end.
