  1. Isn't this about the same time as last year when we played the Brewers and swept them in that four gamer - basically taking command of the division for the rest of the year? Not that this is exactly the same, but the Cards are playing a tough team, we're playing a team that has no business having the record they do. There's a chance to sweep and take command of the division again. But since 4-game sweeps are rare, I'll settle for three. Need this first one for sure. Go Cubs.
  2. I never thought I would dread the 3-hole coming to bat. But, at least right now, I feel like he will kill any rally we have started. I'm pleased when he only records a single out per at bat. That is now my definition of D-Lee keeping a rally going: not hitting into a DP with a weak grouder to the left side. I hope he can bounce back, but he looks lost right now. To be fair, he was alwsays a slow starter before joining the Cubs. Maybe he can pull it together as the season progresses. But you have to wonder if Lou is eyeing a drop in the lineup soon.
  3. Definitely need to keep our eye on the weather. Bradley shouldn't play in any game where the temp is below 60 degrees. And he should never play on a wet field. We knew this was the risk going in. The question is: do you want Reed's glove or Micah's bat in there when MB is out?
  4. He's put up a pretty good 0 for 9 - if there is such a thing. He's worked counts, got robbed of two RBI double last night by the ump and still has managed an OBP over .350. I like what I've seen. The hits will come.
  5. I wasn't asking for equal ground, I was asking for a better explaination. If anything I was self depricating saying "I'm probably revealling my lack of math skills." The rebutal: you're stupid. Is that representative of the detailed analysis that is so revered on this site?
  6. I just don't think his bat plays that big a role when he wins games. That's all. If I'm wrong, I'm wrong and have no problem with it. The problem I have is with the holier than thous on this board who sneer at people that are just coming around to Sabremetrics etc. and don't fully understand methodologies or the relevance of some of the numbers. When people state an opinion then genuinley ask for guidence, they're met with people like Meph who seem to think quantity is a substitute for quality when it comes to posting. It's too bad because otherwise this is a very enjoyable site with a lot of info you can't get at other Cub blogs etc. It's also sad that a grown man (big assumption there) acts the way he acts on an everyday basis. Embarassing really.
  7. More deep thoughts from this absolute joke of a human being. I love that you feel the need to gloss yourself in your sig. That tells me everything I need to know about you. But you're no Mozart, or Salieri. You're a petulant five-year old banging out Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. Grow up, you nobody. But he's right, and you've added nothing to the discussion. Point for him. Adding runs with the bat makes you more likely to win, whether you are having a good day pitching or not. You can lose 2-1 just as easily as 8-7. Which is why I asked for someone to explain the way they come to those numbers in my post. I wasn't saying I was right,. I was saying it didn't seem right to me and wanted a little more information. I was called stupid for my temerity. It's true I didn't add to the discussion. As Meph likes to repeat over and over ad nauseum: I didn't tell people things they didn't already know. Nothing new here. There isn't anyone who is not aware of what type of person Meph is. Thanks for your completely unnecessary two cents, though. I forgot how you guys like to travel in packs.

  9. Am I looking at this wrong? If Z can only contribute with his bat in games he pitches, then how can you look at his pitching and hitting numbers seperately? He has pinch hit in the past, but the vast majority of his ABs obviously are in his starts. So if his pitching nets him 3.3 wins over average isn't his bat a part of those wins already? Or do they figure these numbers in a statistical vacuum where all numbers are of independent of each other? Perhaps I'm just revealing my lack of math skills. Can someone explain. Because to me its an irrelevant number since Z's hitting rarely if ever is the cause of overcoming an off day pitching, which is the only case where his bat is more important than his arm in determining his value to a team.
  10. google "shocker" (aka Shock her) Why shock her when you can Spock her!
  11. All anyone needs to know is that the Tribune bought the team for $25MM and sold it for $900MM about 30 years later. That's a great return on investment to say the least. The Ricketts, no doubt are hoping lightning strikes again. And while it's doubtful that they'll see the precentage increases that the Trib Co. did, they will make hundreds of millions if they decide to sell the team in 20-30 years. In the meantime, they can operate at a loss a push or a gain. It really doesn't make much difference whatsoever. The value of the team is in the fact that it is an appreciating asset.
  12. http://www.gaslampball.com/2009/1/21/730239/alderson-95-chance-peavy-s My guess is that 5% is the Cubs sale. Don't know about the third group, but I bet Ricketts or Utay would give the go ahead I imagine I'm reading too much into it, but it seems like the closer the Cubs get to finalizing a sale, the more sure the Padres are that they aren't going to trade Peavy. Could this just be posturing for leverage? I'm willing to believe it.
  13. Kneejerk negativism. Right Listen dopey this team will be lucky to win 50 games. Only people like Al Yellon think this team is good. Adam Dunn would make this team great but without him this season is already over I'm assuming this is sarcasm. If not, I rest my case.
  14. How is that rotation significantly different than last year's opening day rotation? The knee-jerk negativism on this site is mind boggling. It's like a cult of flagellants. You love to whip yourselves up into a frenzy of loathing before there's any cause- if there ever is. Needless to say, you are all overreacting to the Nth degree as usual. I must find it amusing because I keep coming back for more. Now, back to your hysterics ladies.....
  15. Why are this guy's personal feelings about a trade sufficient to merit their own thread in transactions? Marry it with the actual transaction thread. +1 on ignore
  16. Who even cares though? If it's true, we'll find out soon enough If it's not true, the guy is getting what he wants by having people discuss it on here for 2-3 pages. Life is too short to debate the validity of such a randomly ridiculous rumor. If a blog mentioned something, or if a real beat writer mentioned something, then by all means investigate. But if its some random "friend of a friend knows someone" rumor thats actually legit less than 1% of the time, why bother? +1 These types of rumors got old a long, long time ago. I have yet to see a "my friend knows a guy" type rumors actually scoop a story as big as a Peavy deal or the like. I get that Donnie D was just reporting what Peavy himself wanted, and this has held up, so I don't include it for the purposes of this discussion. But sometimes we just want something so badly we are willing to believe anyone who will tell us what we want to hear. Ocams Razor tells us the simplest answer is usually true. Is it likely that someone on cubs.com has information that has eluded all major baseball beat reporters? No. Therefore, the simplest answer is that he's not on the level. I hope I'm wrong, but there it is.
  17. My friend got the same email. Have they introduced Luis Vizcaino? That's probably it. Do they have press conferences for guys like Vizcaino? Did they have one for Gregg, for example? I can't remember.
  18. Same here. Someone should start a thread. Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo. Been there, done that. JK \:D/
  19. Is it just me, or does this seem like too much? Especially the length.
  20. Same here. Someone should start a thread.
  21. Got to believe that the Lowe signing firmly closes the door for the Braves as an option for Peavy.
  22. I didn't think you were being nasty or unreasonable. Just a stock phrase I probably misused. Your point is well taken.
  23. Girls, girls.....you're both pretty. :-)) But seriously, I don't think we're trying to say that "definitely" the Reds are going to be a thorn in our side, just that they have a pretty good young nucleus and that they could be very good if their talent pans out. Yes you can say that about other teams. But, the discussion was about the Reds vis a vis the Cardinals and they're chances to surprise/overachieve. In that sense, what I think I and 15% are saying is that there is a chance the surprise team is the Reds, and that "horrible" might be a bit strong to describe them. Reasonable people can disagree. I certainly will stipulate that the Reds could fall flat on their collective face and finish dead last.
