Cue the debate over whether this counts as a "strain" or a "tear."

All strains are tears. This isn't good, but it doesn't sound horrible.

Relatively, it is good. Very good.

I had serious concerns about losing him for the season.

Plus the rest wouldn't hurt him.

He's not out of the woods yet. A minor tear doesn't always stay minor, even if you let him rest awhile. Then it is season over, and possibly more.

Leave it to Kyle for encouraging words. Dude!

Isn't "strain" just a prettier word for "small tear?"

I thought a strain was just a pull.

A pull is a tear. When you pull or stretch a muscle too far, there are micro tears in the muscle fibers.

Every time you lift weights you have micro tears in your muscle.

Good to know I don't have any micro tears.

Come on. This anti-negativity vibe is getting out of control. Yesterday, I heard it for saying the Cubs didn't look like a 100-win team anymore, and today I get it for just saying "he isn't out of the woods yet."

Dice-K strained his shoulder liked 2-3 weeks ago and they DL'd him just to be safe, he'll pitch tomorrow.

Give him a month off to be sure. I'd rather have a rested and ready Z for the second half.

you didn't say he isn't out of the woods you said "it isn't good." There is a massive difference. He could have been out for a very long time so him missing three starts IS a good thing. It's not ideal but considering the circumstances its the best you could hope for.

Forget to turn on the sarcasm barometer today??? Pull and tear are synonyms.

He was right in clarifying. I don't know anything about medical terms.

Watch him come back and dominate like Prior in '03.
As long as that's where the Prior comparison ends I'm all for that. :D

I have had a million muscle strains in a million places. The only cure is rest.

DL for 15 and reevaluate. We'll survive fine if he misses two or three starts.

Cubs.com[/url]"]"The good news is there was no structural damage to the two main parts of his shoulder," Cubs general manager Jim Hendry said following Zambrano's MR arthrogram. "The two worrisome parts of his shoulder are the labrum and the rotator cuff, and they're in very, very good shape for a man who has pitched as many innings in the big leagues that he has."

Trainers and coaches will meet with Zambrano on Saturday to determine the next course of action. Sean Marshall could replace the ace on Tuesday against Baltimore, or Sean Gallagher could start.

Found this at the Cub Reporter.

Link.

The infraspinatus is the posterior of the four muscles that make up the rotator cuff. Cuff tears are mostly synonymous for a tear in the supraspinatus tendon which is the superior muscle and tendon. The muscle in front is the subscapularis and the teres minor is posterior below the infraspinatus. A mild muscle strain implies some inflammation but no significant stretch or tear of the muscle fibers. So with no structural damage and a collective sigh from all places Cub Blue, the conservative thing is to let Zambrano's shoulder rest for two starts. Supposedly they discussed this with Z and they wanted to know if he should miss only one start (vs. Baltimore) or two starts (at US Comisk-ular). Rumor has it that when Zambrano was told he would not bat in an AL team home park he opted to miss two starts.

It's the comment "season over, and possibly more" that is overly negative, not the comment about "not being out of the woods."

Isnt it something like the lifting tears the existing muscles causing new muscle to generate and thats how it builds?

I'd put Z on the DL. Call up Marshall and you are a bench player short and a pitcher short with Z taking up a roster spot. DL him retroactive to yesterday, he's eligible to come off 4th of July to start against the Cardinals.

I agree, it's time Marshall got another shot anyway. With a little luck, he'll pitch well and we'll have an option to go to when Marquis inevitably stops being able to put together a decent start or two to keep the wolves away from his doorstep.
