ESPN Sportscenter just reported that the Cubs did indeed put Zambrano on the DL. No mention of who they are bringing up.

Makes sense. Hed probably miss 2 starts anyway, and rather then send Cotts down and be short a bullpen arm, they did the right thing. It will be retroactive to Thursday, and he'll be back after the 15 days. Marshalls been pretty much confirmed as Tuesdays starter, so thats who will come up.

Chicago Cubs

Placed RHP Carlos Zambrano on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to June 19, with a minor strain in his right shoulder; recalled INF Eric Patterson from Triple-A Iowa.

Apparently they're going with the extra bat for now. This might be a precautionallry move in case Johnson or Edmonds need DL time. If so, Marshall will be brought up in their spot, if not, Patterson will go back down and Marshall will take his spot. E-Patt must be living out of his suitcase these days.

On the pregame show, Lou indicated that the current plan is to probably activate Zambrano for the St. Louis series. That would leave him with two starts before the All-Star break.

I still think this is a blessing in more ways than one. Zambrano gets time off and is better in the post season. Marshall gets a chance to prove himself. The Cubs organization searches hard for a legitimate starter, trough a trade or in the organization, in case someone else goes down or someone *cough* Marquis forgets how to to what he's been doing.

I don't think it was necessarily a precautionary move. I think it's more a case of it being pointless to bring Marshall up now and having him waste a roster spot for a few days. It's fairly common to wait until the day of the start to officially call up a starting pitcher.
