Why not go ahead and do the MRI today?

It isn't surprising to me. Makes sense that he would have an orthpod do an exam before scheduling an MRI and you don't just scheduled those at the drop of a hat unless it is an emergency situation. Sorry, gang, Z's sore shoulder is not an emergency in the true definition of the word.

It doesn't surprise me that someone saw him at the park though.

Levine reporting that his sources say Z is expected to miss one start.

Just heard it on MJH

How the hell does he know that without him getting an MRI. Maybe thats what they think before seeing the MRI.

one start or at least one start?

One start is what they said. Not at least.

We'll see how much Levine knows before an MRI has even been taken.

If he's only going to miss one start, the Cubs could use Lieber without making a roster move, or with the off day on Monday, they could just move everyone up a day.

Maybe they could spot start Marmol so he can get some extra work in.

I don't know if we can just peg Lieber into a start. He's only pitched 2 innings or more once since May 2nd. I doubt he's stretched out to go more than 3-4 innings. In fact, he's only pitched 3 times this month total. I think Marshall would be the better choice.

And then, put him in the outfield for the middle innings and bring him back to the mound to close it out ?

Old dudes have pulled that off before. If it was a kid I'd be worried, but Lieber should be able to got 5+ on a moment's notice.

I like the way you think.

If Zambrano is going to miss one start, I think I'd DL him for the full 15 days. No need to rush him back before he's ready when we have a 6.5 game lead.

Sweet, howd we gain the other 2.5?

My friend said that Bruce said the MRI was just precautionary.

Mark Prior was only supposed to miss one start too. Then again, this isn't an official Cubs press release, so there is no reason to believe it's a complete lie (yet)

If there's any damage in there that puts him out for a significant length of time, it's over. We won't win the division without Z, and if we do back into the playoffs and he's still out, we're toast. He is the most important player on the team right now.

someone just shoot erik here and put him out of his Cubs-induced misery. I'm surprised he's not catatonic by now

Once-bitten, twice-shy, my friend. It just seems like this is the other shoe dropping. Soriano is out, Z's status is uncertain... you can't tell me this isn't a good sign.

I've just been hurt too many times by this team to where it doesn't even hurt anymore. I'm just kinda numb to the whole thing.

I'm as big of a fan as anyone here, but as I've said before when following the Cubs: Hope for the best, but expect the worst.

And was I wrong about Z? We can survive the loss of Soriano. We could survive if Lee or Aram or Fukudome or Soto got hurt. We could even prevail if Marmol or Wood got injured. However, if Z went down, then what? A very lucky Dempster becomes our #1, and if he comes back down to earth we're really screwed. I don't think it's any big secret that the rotation is our weak point, and if we lose our only true ace, that's a hell of a blow.

So here's my worthless update:

I was down at Wrigley during lunch to replace my ruined Zambrano jersey t-shirt and see if any singles were available for future Friday games (got 7/25, 8/8, and 8/22!). If that's not tempting fate, I don't know what is. Anyways, at 12:50 PM, Zambrano emerged from the entrance right next to the ticket office wearing a tan-ish colored shirt and was accompanied by some bearded gentleman. They didn't say much and none of us wanted to bother Z, so I'm actually just wasting your time. He wasn't "favoring" his shoulder at all and while he didn't look to be in a great mood, he also wasn't crying. After a minute, he got into his black Mercedes sedan and drove off.

Although, come to think of it, he did back out of the spot slowly and take a while to turn the wheel, but I figured that delay was just caused by some woman calling him and Z having to tell them that he's married.

So again, I've got nothing. But I did stand 20 feet from Zambrano today and you didn't.

Now it's time to schedule some half-Fridays.

So it did appear that he still had arms?

Refreshing that he doesn't look like this guy.

Is that the second time this week you plugged that pic?

nope. it was my first.

somebody else has definitely used it

I think it was used in either Saturday or Sundays game thread in regards to Marmol.

Because the Brewers are the team that we're holding off, not the Cardinals.

+1

Cards just showed what they really are.

They just said on SportsCenter that Zambrano will miss his next start. Not really a surprise, but it was confirmed so I wanted to pass it along.

They are now saying "at least" on ESPN 1000.

FWIW, Mac did not phrase it that way the first time I heard him report it. I'm pretty sure I would've noticed and known the difference.

You must have heard it wrong the second time.
