PECOTA's projection:

.239/.326/.414 overall

.216/.295/.364 vs. LHP

.247/.342/.456 vs. RHP

I'd say how fried his bat looks probably cancels out any upshot we should give his projection heading from PETCO to Wrigley.

Discuss.

Edmonds has a 22.4% LD% and a .227 BABIP. It also appears he was a bit unlucky last season, with a 19.5% LD% and a .285 BABIP. Granted, his HR/FB has dropped very steeply, but it appears his decline hasn't been as bad as a casual glance at his numbers would have suggested.

Let's cling onto the positives for dear life.

I'm turning over every stone here looking for them.

Quick calculation here...

Edmonds has gotten 15 hits on balls in play. Given his LD%, he's missing out on 7.7 hits. If we were to add those to his line (entirely as singles), it jumps up to .263/.340/.319

That's ignoring for a moment that PETCO park has a hugely negative effect on flyballs, and Jim Edmonds (like Khalil Greene) is an extreme flyball hitter. As such, Edmonds would seems to have the potential to gain much more from a move to Wrigley (which significantly inflates home runs) than your average player.

I don't support this move... but the front office has some justification for being willing to explore signing him at the league minimum.

I'm sure that's exactly how Hendry and company are thinking about this move.

I wouldn't put it past them to be able to recognize that the numbers don't reflect how well he's been swinging the bat.

Personally, I think he's lost a good chunk of the power left in his bat. But I wouldn't be terribly surprised to see a Brian Giles type of season out of him, which would certainly have some value.

Edmonds was still decent v. RHP last year, he could conceivably do fine in a platoon situation.

I really don't know whether or not Edmonds is worth it...but I guess if we're not going to play Pie, Edmonds might as well be given a shot. He might show some life playing at Wrigley. He's got good career #s at Wrigley (power and OBP wise). He'd only face RHs...and he'd have a lot of support in the lineup around him.

The thing I don't get is the desire to move Fukudome to the 2 spot...then Theriot is wasted hitting 8th? As much as I doubt that Theriot will keep it up, he's still hitting .333 with a .416 OBP through the first month and a half.

If I was given the choice, I'd say no to Edmonds. Just not worth it...let Pie play.

Maybe the Cubs think they can get a Gary Gaetti type season out of Edmonds (Gaetti had a line of 320/.397/.594 for the Cubs in 1998). Perhaps getting Edmonds into a more legit lineup, and the chance to hurt the Cards, might rejuveniate Edmonds. I know, I know I am stretching it, but let's face it....if Hendry has a hard-on for a certain player, he's going to land the guy (Lilly/Fuku/Soriano, etc, etc). And the fact that Edmonds has already told his agent not to talk to any team before he talks to the Cubs, just shows me, it's when not if, on Edmonds becoming a Cub.

But I would only offer a minor league deal, and have him play for Iowa for about a week, 10 days before I'd make a decision on Edmonds, taking a spot on the 40 man roster. I would prefer Pie playing against RH, but it seems to me Hendry is determined to land Edmonds.

I certainly could get over my dislike of Edmonds if he can help the Cubs in some small way. I don't hate any player THAT much. To answer the question to whoever asked he's always had something bad to say about the Cubs it seems, that's where alot of the dislike comes from. If it weren't for "revenge like motives" he probably would not want to come here. The Enemy of my Enemy creates a new friend. LOL.

I almost want this to happen just for the unintentional comedic value.

or for that weird dazed feeling you get that you are not quite sure if you are still sleeping? I think that's what will happen to me if JE comes up to bat for the Cubs.

red sox 2007: pedroia doesn't hit the first month; team sticks with him because the team as a whole is hitting great, and pedroia's lack of production is not hurting the team's output much.

cubs 2008: pie doesn't hit for the first month; team gives up on him despite having the top offense in baseball and signs a washed-up 38 year old outfielder as the "solution"

I love how people keep talking about Edmonds' numbers this year, yet when people were talking about Theriot's hot start a week or two ago it was all about the sample size.

Edmonds is old. End of story.

I really, really wish the Cubs would give Pie some consistent playing time. But if they flat-out won't do it, I'd be more than fine with that line against right-handers.

That's assuming he only plays against right-handers, of course. I suppose that a strict CF platoon of Edmonds and Johnson could possibly, maybe produce an .800 OPS. I could live with that.

Again, I'm grasping at straws to look for positives here.
