Honestly, if Edmonds does well, I see no reason to boo the guy.

Either way, most others will boo him and he'll probably get pissed at the fans soon enough.

Does anyone remember John Starks' tenure with the Bulls? That might be the only situation worse than this. Starks almost refused to play for the hated Bulls, and IIRC the Bulls fans booed the hell out of Starks during his only home game here.

I was there against the Clippers. What a bad Bulls team. Hersey Hawkins hit the game-winning free throws.

As far as Edmonds, it is so like the Cubs to go this route. I hate it philosophically, but are any of us sure that he won't outproduce Pie over the next two months? I am of the mind to let Pie play against every righty until the trade deadline. If he is still at .222/.286/little power, then we may need a longer-term solution anyway. The Vernon Wells injury put an end to the Burnett-Wells blockbuster I was anticipating.

I think there's a good chance he will, but that blurs the larger picture, unfortunately.

Lofton, is a terrible OF.

Uh, we were discussing guys at their best in their primes, obviously. It would be a little difficult for Puckett to run one down these days.

If we aren't going to give Pie a chance we better trade him. What a waste of a top prospect, (what we are doing is only hurting his value).

Someone is going to need to photoshop an Edmonds "15" Cubs Jersey.
The 15 would have to be in some cutesy font with curly qs and stuff like that. Maybe the front of his jersey can have a heart instead of a dot over the i in Chicago.

While DeRosa and Lou keep clamoring for another left handed bat, can we look at the current stats first and note that we are currently first in the majors in many offensive categories with just 1 and a half lefties in the line up most of the time.

And then, let's look at the team directly behind us that features these right handed bats:

Eric Byrnes, Chris Young, Justin Upton, Mark Reynolds, Conor Jackson, Chris Snyder

and these lefty bats:

Stephen Drew and switch hitter Orlando Hudson.

1 and a half lefty bats.

We've made it almost a quarter of the season doing just fine in CF. I would find an upgrade in CF reasonable at some point, but Edmonds is NOT an ugrade.

Look how entertaining our outfield will be with Edmonds. We have Soriano doing his hop before every catch. Then we will have Edmonds making the most routine fly ball look like a Sportscenter circus catch. Any way we can get Fukudome to start doing somersaults or 360 degree spins before he catches the ball?

That's all that's left, right?

Pie needs AB's that he will not get up here. Edmonds is very low risk mediocre reward. I hate the guy but he is better than Pie right now. Pie can come back up in September.

But it's unholy. It's blasphemy.

I would love to see how you concluded that Edmonds is better than Pie right now.

Pie strikes out 1/3 of his AB's.

The point is Pie needs to play everyday, he wont be able to up here.

Welcome to the forums, Brian!

I'd like to see Pie get some more ABs in the majors.

Thank you

I would too but with Lou that is unlikely.

Edmonds also strikes out in about 1/3 of his AB's (24 in 90). And he's hit worse than Pie for the year, which includes Pie's horrendous first two weeks.

I won't even get into what Pie's done since Perry and Lou worked with him, because it's not necessary.

Here is Edmonds' OPS+ trends since '04:

'04- 170

'05- 137

'06- 110

'07- 88

'08- 38

As bad as you all think Pie has been hitting, Edmonds' OPS+ so far this year is much worse than Pie's.

Think about this for a minute. The San Diego Padres cut him. If they had a decent CFer to replace him, it might not be worth noting. But, they have Jody Gerut playing CF now. That should tell you something. Edmonds is done.

Signing Jim Edmonds is like making a deal with the devil. I normally wouldn't mind that, because I bet the devil can rake. In this case, however, the devil is past his prime and sucks.

I love how people keep talking about Edmonds' numbers this year, yet when people were talking about Theriot's hot start a week or two ago it was all about the sample size.

it's his numbers last year that concern me, not so much his numbers this year.

Edmonds used to be good. But his body is beat to hell and the concusion apparantly finished him off. His numbers were in a steady decline long before this year and as rocket pointed out, he was awful in 2007. He's almost certainly done.

This guy couldn't keep a job with the last place team in baseball with no real CF solution to replace him, yet the first place Cubs are going to insert him in the starting line up and bat him in the heart of the order.

Brilliant.

I have an idea. Let Pie bat in the heart of the order for a week. If that doesn't get him going, then consider upgrading. And when I say upgrade, I don't mean Edmonds.

It makes sense to try it. Move Theriot to 8th where he can try to steal bases in front of the pitcher's spot rather than when Lee is at the plate.

He's almost certainly done.

Indeed. He'd be a terrible pick up at this point in his career.

I hope this is more speculation than sourced material.

Where's Bruce Miles?

Second, Pie is much better than Edmonds, right now.

I fear it's much more likely that Edmonds will be our Jason Kendall v2.0 as opposed to mere speculation. Hopefully there are similar results in a prospect pushing him out of the picture later in the year.

Bruce's article and blog posting on the subject suggest they are very serious about Edmonds and there's a really good chance he'll at least be given a shot. Knowing the Cubs people, Edmonds won't have to show much to prove worthy (to them) of a callup to the majors, and he won't have to do much in the majors to keep his job. They are more than willing to accept mediocrity or worse from horrible veterans with nothing in the thank than they are willing to accept struggles from kids with significant upside just learning the game.
