Hartshorn JUST pulled.

Kepley JUST inserted.

Freak out as you wish.

There's no one still available worth trading Hartshorn for.

George Kirby?

If there's a lockout next year, Hartshorn could be your opening day starter in 2028 in LF or RF as a 21 year old slugger.... I don't think it makes sense trading him.  Surely they can get Kirby or Detmers with other prospect capital?

In what way would a lockout impact Hartshorn's ability to be part of the 2028 team?

I dunno. Calling it ‘value for a 6th round pick’ doesn’t feel right. He was paid second round money. And it’s not like we have fuckall to show for our past few drafts.

If Pedro is traded, that means both Cam Smith and he were traded to keep horsefeathers Matt Shaw around.

I know that. But if you take the name out of it and just realize they did use a 6th rd pick for him when other teams could have done it too, it is still a 6th round pick. I’m not suggesting they should trade him. I am just saying they get a lot of value for that spot in the draft, if they do trade him for a starting pitcher who can be counted on in the playoffs and someone they can have a few years.

Hartshorn is very good, but there are very real people who believe he is not a corner OF'er. And at that point, it's a 1b prospect. I like Hartshorn a lot, but at 1b, this is not as premium of a prospect as it seems if he plays RF.

Then you have to remember this: if the Cubs are trading Hartshorn, the return will match it. I would assume the other team definitely sees him as a COF in that case and the names would be at the very top of the available names if they did.

Yeah I don’t know. He’s just the only name that comes to mind that would take Hartshorn. The only issue is the Mariners are still in win now mode and they need ready bats. I would assume a Kirby trade to the Cubs would be headlined by Ramirez or Shaw (whichever they prefer) which would take Hartshorn off the table. It’s all just speculation though

Cam Smith has an 86 wRC+ over 899 PA's to this point. Shaw is 10 points better. Still a long way to go for both, but as of today, keeping Shaw over Smith has been the correct baseball move.

We should probably give the Cubs some wiggle room here as they self evaluate their prospects. People we super worried about losing Morel in the Parades deal and that one hasn't hurt, either.

And when the Cubs did trade a good prospect (Hope) they got back talent (Busch). Hoyer cant run a 100% success rate, but they seem to have an eye for this.

Still want him gone over Pedro.

I think he could go for Kirby . With that said Kirby is still listed as the SP today for Sea. If things were advanced enough have to think he would be scratched . Didn’t someone say they were in a delay ? Maybe they didn’t want him on a wet field IDK . It’s probably nothing

He came out the inning before the rain hit.

Can't deal your top kid for a reliever. This isn't 2016. And this isn't the 2016 cub team.

He is a reliever with 3 or 4 years of control. He isn’t Chapman. And there is no clear opinion that he is the Cubs top guy.

I don't think it's going to happen but he's definitely worth it.

Miller is the best reliever in the game and under control for 3 more years after this season. You absolutely can deal Hartshorn for him.

I would think Miller is worth as much as some SP's with control, like Detmers and Soriano.  Maybe, more than those guys.

Yeah.. I like that kid a lot too.  He has a chance to be a special bat.  I agree that his value is lower for this team if he's a 1st basemen and can't play a corner OF spot.

If they are trading someone like him, the return has to be Kirby or Miller.  Anything less than that would be disappointing.

Here's the thing to remember: the Cubs haven't gotten fleeced in a trade, really, under Hoyer. They have made a few moves people got upset about. They got mad they gave up Cam Smith; Smith has been awful at the plate over 900 PA's. They got pissy about Ronny Cruz and Zyhir Hope. But Hope is about the only success story of an traded prospect and they got Busch back.

They can't bat 1.000 but they tend to get it right. If they did trade Hartshorn, I'd guess at the very least what they got back would make us not rue the day we traded him.

I have a feeling the Padres won't trade Miller, though.  If we get him, that'd be awesome.

Adell crushes lefties so it would make sense to platoon him with Happ

In what world would CC sit Happ against a lefty? I just do not see that happening at all.

Sure, but Smith should probably have had those plate appearances in the minors, yeah? And then wouldn’t have made them while learning a new position at the MLB level. (Of the team that just traded a perennial all-star for you. Yeah, a bit of an excuse, but still gotta be hard on a kid, I’d think. Shaw is also almost two years older (loose math.))

Watching Ramirez’s at-bats these past few weeks, he doesn’t look like a kid up there feeling for hits. He looks like a potential dude finding his footing (to an armchair scout.)

I’d hate to see him go. (Maybe I’m a bit enamored with the Mookie and Jose Ramirez comps earlier this year, but he looks so damn calm and polished.)

(Morel was me! He made those ****** teams enjoyable to watch because he was so damn joyful, along with some fun moments. But yes, he never turned those tools into anything useful.)

I am by no means a scout.  But when I saw him last week anytime the ball was hit to him he was baaad. Like worse than Castellanos bad.

Shaw completely revamped his swing and learned a new position, as well. So it cuts both ways. He's still hitting better than Smith and at 900 PA's, he's getting worse, not better.

I think the point is that while I like Ramirez, the Cubs don't just trade guys who go off an make you regret the trade under Hoyer. So whether it's Ramirez, Harthshorn, Ayers...whatever, the Cubs probably deserve the benefit of the doubt that they aren't giving up the next major deal, and that who they get back will help the club.
