I think the difference between PCA and Hoerner is that with PCA you are not simply buying out the arb years you are hoping to lock him in before an offensive maturation that takes him to elite status.  They are expecting him to continue to improve. There is a gambling element to PCA's contract where as Hoerner is more of a known quantity and I think they would be ecstatic if he repeated his 2025 stats for the next few years.

I don't think all Wins are the same.  I think defensive wins are paid less. I'd be stunned if he gets 30M.  It's not my money so I don't care, but I'd be stunned.

As others have said I'm not sure I'd have done this. I like Hoerner - I think he is a very very good player and I'm not disappointed he's going to remain a Cub but I don't know if I would have pulled the trigger on this.

He is much much much cheaper because he's not nearly as good as Hoerner.

That's not the reason at all.

Seems reasonable.  Not to split hairs - although it's not even really doing that - but defense, running and contact skill isn't EVERYTHING.

very lightly dipping your toe into the deferral waters is a good bit. saving $1m a year on the actual value of the contract is just the kind of creative accounting that could put this team over the top

I guessed 6/$130. Not far off. I think it is a good deal for the Cubs. If Nico improves even slightly with power(maybe 10-12 homers) and does everything else the same as last year, I think he could have gotten over $150M for 6. Maybe as much as $170M. Cubs gave him a fair offer and he wants to stay in Chicago, it seems, so this works.

So 23.5 AAV. Def seems like a bit of a discount. Giants are in love with him, def would have given him 30.

Then he'd have to have a pretty bad agent.  I don't think an agent leaves 42 million dollars sitting on the table.

Yeah everyone here was debating where he would fall in between 150 and 200. Deferrals put it about 22.5 a year. Yes he is a defense/speed guy but he does those things extremely well and is a great contact hitter. FWIW, Fangraphs has him worth more than $30 mil each of the last 4 seasons. It does seem like he took less to stay put.

His agent works for him. Maybe he wants to stay in Chicago. Maybe he wants the security of knowing he has 6 more years in Chicago. He could get hurt and not get more next season. Personally, I don’t think he would have gotten $30M a year. But maybe he would have🤷. At the very least, IMO, he would have done better than what the Cubs gave him. Doesn’t mean the agent is bad. Means Nico wanted to stay here.

It means the agent is bad.  Nico may very well want to stay and may have said the Cubs are the only team he is willing to play for and has communicated that to his agent - who presumably would NOT communicate that to the Cubs.  However if a contract of $42 million more is that much of a sure thing then he has to get closer.   That's his job. There was no pressure to sign now.  I just don't think a $30 million was out there.

No reason it couldn’t be. It only takes one team to give him that. Bregman got $35M. I don’t know why Nico couldn’t get $30M. Again, maybe he wants to stay in Chicago. Is Jose Ramirez’s agent bad because Jose signed for a lot less than what he could have made elsewhere? When we are talking generational money, maybe security and familiarity are also important to some players. Doesn’t happen often, but it does happen.

Hey, maybe it was.  I just don't think so.  I just don't think he and Bregman are in same the same level pay wise.  In fairness Bregman got a sizable amount more than I thought he would so what do I know.

Next season per Rosenthal

I suppose that’s my biggest gripe then. I’m teetering back and forth on whether I love this deal or not but overall it’s hard to be upset Nico is a Cub lifer

People who talk about, yeah but he doesn't hit HRs, don't seem to realize that if Nico was even a 20 HR a year gear he'd finish in the top 10 in MVP voting annually. He literally does everything else other than hit HRs very well.

A lack of power manifests in more than just fewer HR.

I think a fair amount of people are aware of that.  Is everybody?  No.  Last year was his 4th full year - it's not like he's been in the league for 10 years.   He does most things well - somethings very well.  He could take a few more walks as well - but he's a very good player.  After last year - now moving into his 5th full year I think his reputation is much more established.

I think hes gonna age well too. I like this contract. Cant be upset about it and hope Nico ages and is a Cub lifer.
