It's probably true, but Hub Arkush likes to stir stuff up.

By my count, between players under contract, the front office and the coaching staff, the Chicago Bears have about 150 employees who are directly football-related.  Even if 98% of them love Fields and 2% doubt, the statement "some inside the Bears are unsure if Fields is the guy" would technically be true.

Is JSN a prototypical slot wr?

His whole schitck is that he's supposed to have off-the-charts agility and technique, such that he can get open in quick bursts, but he lacks the top-end speed to pull away from people on longer routes.

Fields being slow to pull the trigger was in his scouting report coming out of Ohio State, where he had plenty of time to throw.

Sacks are as much a QB stat as they are an OL stat, and you don't become the most sackable team in modern NFL history without having a problem on both axes.

I don't think it's an even blame situation, though. And a lot of sacks he avoids because he's a freak.

He ran a 4.5 at his pro day and we see a lot of comps to Kupp and St. Brown and those guys were 4.6.

JSN's 3-cone beat them both as well.

I really want that security blanket to draw heavy coverage in the short-intermediate so that Moore and Mooney can take the top off. Kmet would feast as well with JSN getting so much attention.

I love JSN, but I just don't think we have the luxury of going WR in the first when our second rounder is tied up in Claypool. I liked the trade because I still like Claypool, but the trenches need the attention.

I think DJ Moore is a similar receiver, anyway, with more straight line speed and similar agility.

I really don’t think it’s a luxury to pick the best receiver in the draft, or the best of any skill position player. High end talent is valuable. The lines can be improved with a bunch of depth picks in the 2nd and 3rd round. No, they probably won’t get a great player there, but just finding decent pieces would be an upgrade. Then you still have a lot of picks in 2024 to upgrade the lines.

but what if we can get the best LT in the draft? we can probably debate BPA all day, but we still allowed 58 sacks last season, and Fields's pressure rate was even worse last year than in 2021, like historically bad.

I also don't think we should pick JSN because we're afraid the Packers will take him. He's not Jamarr Chase or Justin Jefferson. He's good, for sure, but he's not a must-take. i think protection is more emergent for Fields. Find the best OL and then take Fashanu or Alt next year. That's starting to look like a line.

I'd prefer using the pick on either line, but wouldn't be upset about JSN. Both Mooney & Claypool are FA after this coming season, so you're going to spend a ton of money on that room or you're going to need to replace 1-2 of them anyway. And as much as I'd love to nab Marvin Jr next year, he's probably going to be going really early in that draft.

Also, you still owe me cash. The running game was *not* elite.  🤣

Please pay to the charity of your choice.

Setting aside the issue of skill positions versus the trenches, it would be criminal insanity to take JSN over Bijan, if they were both available.

I hope we take Brown or Gibbs later if we want a RB.

Saying it again, getting rid of Mustipher was horsefeathering huge, Dude got physically dominated constantly and also whiffed on way too many assignments altogether. Adding Davis on the line, and potentially adding a starting T and a C that can push Patrick - I think we see that pressure rate drop significantly. Fields should have a squad that leaves no room for excuses for production.

I certainly always expect Fields to be a high sack rate guy in the vain of a Russell Wilson (or a Joe Burrow?) But yea, a lot of analytic nerds, especially ones who put zero tape effort in and wanna defend ESPN PRWR to the death have gone way over board with the "sacks are a QB stat" thing.

Hey he could be a Kirk Cousins and just throw the ball away at a super high rate but those aren't positive plays. They're just less negative.

I don't know about criminal, but yeah if we take a skill guy I'd rather have Bijan.

Didn't the Bears lead the NFL in rushing yards per game, and average yards per rush?

Wrong year.

He's referring to a bet from several years ago with Sulley (Magnetic Curses).  I can't remember which year it was though.

Here are my top 5 targets at 9, in order:

1. Will Anderson, EDGE, Alabama (he won't fall to 9 unless something weird happens)
2. Jalen Carter, DE, Georgia (he may fall here after his lackluster combine, would be a shame to pass on him if he gets to 9)
3. Tyree Wilson, EDGE, Texas Tech
4. Devon Witherspoon, CB, Illinois (bias but love the idea of locking down opposing passing offenses)
5. Paris Johnson, OL, Ohio State (I like this as a better option than Skoronski here, Bears need an upgrade at tackle more than guard, even if Skoronski will be a great guard)

If all 5 are off the board, I'd be disappointed, but Skoronski, Gonzalez (CB, Oregon), or Smith-Nigba (WR Ohio State) would be acceptable, but I'd wonder if it were possible to trade down, gain picks, and still get one of those guys 3-5 picks later.

Claypool and Mooney are both impending free agents
