Changes will definitely be made and additions and subtractions needed but this sport is so weird and unpredictable I think this is really a horsefeathers happens year more than anything. When you make the playoffs every year you’re likely not getting the wanted outcome in this mostly stupid sport.

Being held to 1 run or less runs 40 or whatever the horsefeathers times seems like a statiscal anomaly, it won't happen again.

A statistical anomaly is definitely not 25%

Ok, bet you $1.00 it doesn't happen next season.

Rizzo didn't exactly give Chili Davis an endorsement there, when asked about whether the team got away from their approach of using the whole field - "If I hit the ball to left field, it's an accident."

I wonder how much, if any at all, of Rizzo’s terrible April was due to trying to adapt to Chili’s new approach. Im trying not to draw any conclusions from a short quote after back to back tough losses that ended their season, but I wonder if Rizzo didn’t just say horsefeathers it I’m doing it my way.

Could have just been a crazy slump mixed with a bunch of bad luck too that had nothing to do with Chili.

Wasn’t he crazy unlucky in the first ~30 games? Like all his underlying numbers were fine with LD%, where the ball was going, etc and was in line with his career? Like he was literally the same guy, just was hitting outs at guys and getting BABIP’d to death?

I mean it’s pretty clear that joe didn’t lose this game for us, in fact one of his moves was probably central to us getting our only run home. As much as his pen management frustrates me, I don’t know who else I’d want. His handling of the addy situation was bad for sure.

The feast or famine nature of the offense made this season tough to watch. You'd think I'd be happy with 95 wins, Javy going ballistic, and the staff pitching as well as they did towards the end of the season. But, the decrease in dongs and the lack of driving in runs seemed to ruin it all.

If Maddon leaves, the Cubs instantly downgrade at the position even if it's Girardi. It's nothing anyone should hope for. It's a miracle this team managed to win 95 games and some of that was Maddon.

"even if it's girardi"

Yeah he meant even if it’s not Girardi right? Oh wait it’s rmack

I still can't shake Gore not knowing what the hell his role was in that last inning. Draw the walk, stupid. Then you steal second and give your team 3 chances to drive you in. Edited by OleMissCub

He could have either taken the hbp for the team or just not swung the damn bat. Either way he's on base.

Yes his moved saved the game for us but I’d still contend that 2 outs runner on first removing Rizzo from the game was the wrong time to use him. He should have came in when Happ (as a PH) got on to lead off the 6th with the top of the order due up. You don’t remove anyone from the game and you aren’t relying on a 2 out hit to score, you can steal 2nd and 3rd, second and bunt him to 3rd etc. I guess my only hesitation is that he was scared of Freelands pickoff move

Yes, I agree. I definitely felt that was when Gore should have come in. It worked out in the end, but you sacrifice a lot by removing Rizzo from the game.

Maybe should have left Schwarber's bat in there instead of Heyward

Abso-effing-lutely. Of everything that happened last night, this pissed me off most.

bryant's strikeout in the 12th where they were obviously pitching around him to get to terrance gore was pretty bad, too.

The 9th inning when Davis was trying to give us the gave but Murphy and Schwarber wouldn’t take their walk and Willy tried not to lost the game for us.

That is terrifying

Bryant would never say it if his shoulder was actually a problem.

But if this is what he is from now on then yeah, we're toast.

Unless its injury, players as good and young as Kris Bryant don't instantly become medicore to bad, Cub or no Cub. This is an overaction, I looked at Bryant' stats - he's really, really good - without question he played hurt this season. It was evident today, look at his follow through on his swing.

This doesn't totally go against your point because he never was as good as Kris Bryant, but Jason Heyward did earn a hefty contract at Bryant's age and instantly became medicore to bad.

I was at the game last night and not a chance I'm reading through all of this, so apologies if this was already discussed. But from what I remember Schwarber pinch hit for Strop when Gore was already in left field, and then Hamels came in Schwarber's spot, not Gore's. From all accounts, Gore is a terrible defensive player too, and I'd honestly have more confidence in Hamels at the plate than Gore.

It just stuck with me last night for a while that Maddon essentially decided Gore was a better fit in left field than Schwarber for a tie game going into the 10th inning.

I’m ok with this. Gore is not going to do anything. Might as well see if Bryant can end it with a dong. It’s a long shot, but so is Gore doing anything productive with the bat.

i think bryant’s hr rate on sliders low and out of the strike zone is probably like -40. it’s a nice idea, but he wasn’t being pitched to.
