bryant's strikeout in the 12th where they were obviously pitching around him to get to terrance gore was pretty bad, too.

I’m ok with this. Gore is not going to do anything. Might as well see if Bryant can end it with a dong. It’s a long shot, but so is Gore doing anything productive with the bat.

i think bryant’s hr rate on sliders low and out of the strike zone is probably like -40. it’s a nice idea, but he wasn’t being pitched to.

Yeah...it made me half seriously wonder if Kris was swinging at junk to try to get the pitcher to change his strategy and throw him something in the zone.

Abso-effing-lutely. Of everything that happened last night, this pissed me off most.

The 9th inning when Davis was trying to give us the gave but Murphy and Schwarber wouldn’t take their walk and Willy tried not to lost the game for us.

Murphy yes. Schwarber got hosed though. That’s on the ump, not Schwarber.

And that's when he's actually hitting like normal Bryant.

I totally get that. But Gore is on the field for one reason only: his speed. If Bryant doesn’t hit the ball out of the park, you have Gore coming up exactly where you want him... leading off an inning.

Of course, that part is contingent on threatening Gore with his life if he takes the bat off his shoulder.

On 2-1 sure. But Davis had tried to walk Murphy, did walk Contreras and started 2-0 on Schwarber and then he swung at a pitch well up and in. I know Davis probably throws different pitches but even if you give him the 3-0 strike (which the ump would have done), the fifth pitch was well outside the zone. Schwarber set that whole thing in motion but not waiting for a strike.

So this was in Passan's article about the Cubs today:

They are a team that preaches culture – and still has a player in the middle of a must-win game sitting in the clubhouse and scrolling through an iPad, much to the chagrin of others in the dugout who were living and dying with every pitch.

Anyone want to guess who that was?

Probably wasn't Murphy but I want to believe.

Not sure who you are referring to by Frank Stallone. Was it La Stella?

Someone in the dugout but not on the roster? Edwards? Freeman? Morrow?

Somebody who was pulled from the game early.

I’m not even sad like in 03, 07, 08 or 15. I’m not satisfied with having won recently like last year (plus a great team beat us, no harm in that) I’m just frustrated by all the what ifs and underachievement in the second half by the offense. Good riddance 2018. Hope next year isn’t filled with rainout weirdness. Get back to being elite

So I know people are mocking those using the schedule at the end as an excuse. And maybe it should be mocked, obviously there are other factors that could be used to explain the Cubs offensive slump but the numbers match up to a team that might be fatigued.

Team season batting line up to August 19th (the last off day before the death march): .262/.340/.417/.757

Cubs battling line from August 21st to October 1st: .247/.311/.390/.701

But break that down even further....

Batting line the first 13 games of the death march: .277/.337/.485/.821

Batting line the last 27 games: .232/.298/.341/.639

The bullpen numbers have a similar dive, but there were also injuries to Strop and Morrow as well as whatever was going on with Edwards that can partially explain that.

and that Cishek seemingly pitched every other day all season too. I thought it was evident he was tired down the stretch.

As far as the offense goes, they scored 1 run in 17 innings the second game of the season against the Marlins. The inconsistency of the offense was a story all year, no matter how the most optimistic of fans could have attempted to spin it. Whether that falls on the idiot hitting coach, or the majority of the position players peaking in their first or second year in the big leagues is up for debate, but most likely, it's some combination of the two.

sure would be nice if the Trump loving owners doled out their money to the Harper & Machado slush funds in about a month or so.

I, for one, am mystified that an offense that regularly employed Jason Heyward, Albert Almora and David Bote would struggle to score runs.

Yeah, Bote sucks. Whatever; who cares. But man, the other two just really make me wonder what happened, and how did the Cubs get it SO wrong?

The completely fail to turn Heyward into the dongsmith everyone hoped he could be and wreck him for life...and then seemingly try to turn everyone into scrappy singles slappers? What the horsefeathers? Mallee and Davis (and, probably, Joe) are horsefeathering monsters.

This was my thought. Everyone that came to mind that was on the roster didn't make sense either based on what we know about them or by game situation.
