I won't be naive enough to think that no one will do something stupid at some point, but I do think there's a difference in the novelty. Fukudome was coming to MLB from Japan and was the first major player the Cubs have had from Japan, Darvish has been here for 6 years and pitched in Wrigley in the playoffs last year.

Hopefully a lot of the fans have grown the horsefeathers up since the Fukudome days.

I'm hopeful but not optimistic.

I guess that was literally ten years ago tho. Hopefully there are fewer idiots.

Kyuji Fujikawa

Tsuyoshi Wada

Munenori Kawasaki

Koji Uehara

The Cubs have had quite a few Japanese players since Fukudome and fans have behaved.

Nobody cared about those guys and I'm not really sure whether the Kawasaki stuff qualifies even if he does take part in it himself.

Darvish is a big deal. Nobody is going to show up at a game for koji uehara in a karate kid costume..

Come on, clearly we're talking about different circumstances in regards to all of the hype around Fukudome and a guy like Darvish vs. a bunch of dudes. Nobody was ever going to be selling t-shirts for Uehara outside of Wrigley.

It's a given that racist memorabilia will be sold outside Wrigley. Though it won't be seen as such by many. "Just paying homage to the Japanese culture"

I think our fans are more toned down and knowledgeable since Theo got here.

Just saw that this is the 4th nine-figure free agent contract in Cubs history, putting them second all-time behind the Yankees.

Wow. I'd have thought Boston would be an easy 2nd. Probably would have guessed Dodgers had more than 4 too.

Dodgers I believe only have Kevin Brown and Zach Grienke. (Re-signing/extending Kershaw and Kemp don't count as "free agent signings" for this stat, I assume).

Red Sox are David Price, Manny Ramirez and Carl Crawford. (Adrian Gonzalez was acquired with a year left and extended right as the season started).

Cubs are Soriano, Lester, Heyward and Darvish.

No. I have:

ARod

Jeter

Teixeria

Sabathia

Tanaka

Ellsbury

Giambi

Jeter and Arod don't count

Wouldn't the second ARod deal count since he opted out and was a free agent? And if that's the case then CC would count twice since he opted out also.

So this is easily the biggest Japanese star the Cubs have ever had. I hope we get some fun Japanese media hijinks. Especially when Joe starts bringing Emus around and stuff.

Hopefully a lot of the fans have grown the horsefeathers up since the Fukudome days.

Sounds like Theo made one last call to Jake’s contingent before finalizing the Yu deal. Reportedly he asked if Jake would be willing to accept a similar deal and was told no.

Where did you see this? Interested to read the article. Wouldn’t be surprised if Jake waits in to Spring at this point and wait for an injury

Heyman wrote about it. He's definitely the guy that supposedly said he'd be willing to wait into the season

i’m going to go out on a limb and say the contract we asked arrieta if he’d accept was similar to the darvish deal in that it was on that would allow him to play major league baseball.

no way did we offer arrieta something comparable to this and double no way would he have turned it down.

I hope that is true for Jake's sake because I would like him not to be the avatar of this CBA by waiting until June to sign.

I strongly hope that St Louis or Milwaukee gives him a $35M/yr for 7 year contract tomorrow.

How long would the Arrieta saga have to drag out for the Cubs to lose a compensatory draft pick?

Yeah I doubt it was the same deal as well and agree no way would he have turned it down. It was probably a similar structure but only like 4/80-90 guaranteed with incentives to bump it up another ~$20 million and/or team/vesting options for additional years plus an opt out but doubt it was the same deal from a guaranteed money/years standpoint.
