Seems odd that it goes down for 2019 and then back up for the two following years.

Guessing it is all arranged to potentially fit Harper. The Cubs have Zobrist (12.5m) and Cishek (6.5m) on the books in 2019 but do not in 2020.

Maybe an incentive to keep him from opting out?

Any way you slice this I love this deal though.

Is homie rocking some Pradas?

Also, that's the closest to an in-focus shot Gordon has ever tweeted. And I think it's heavily optically zoomed in, too.

digitally you mean?

unless he's got one of fancy newfangled optical zoom phones

This is the roughest math possible, but with those details, the Cubs have the following lined up for 2019:

Locked in ($130m): 10 players

Heyward, Lester, Darvish, Zobrist, Chatwood, Morrow, Rizzo, Cishek, Duensing, Smyly

Options picked up: 2 players, $19m

Quintana $10.5

Strop $6.3

Arbitration (guess): 9 players, $45m

Bryant $16

Hendricks $8

Russell $7

Grimm $3

LaStella $1

Baez $3

Montgomery $2

Schwarber $3

Edwards $2

That's $194m for 21 spots, 3 minimums plus...$40m a year puts us around $235. Obviously Zobrist, Heyward, Smyly, etc are candidates to at least try to dump. But even with that, i don't think that number is too outrageous.

Will help in Bryce’s first year for real cash outlays since we shed some good payroll in 2020 and 2021 (obviously some needs to be made up and arby raises). Plus don’t want to entirely incentivize him from opting out by loading first two years.

Yeah, I get the points on it possibly being related to Harper, but I think you're right...I think it's incentive to not opt out.

“In person, you don’t look like a guy I only have to throw with 60% effort to get out.”

Speaking of in-person, Heyward is the most physically imposing human I've ever seen. He made guys like Rizzo, Bryant and Schwarbs look puny in comparison

Darvish had tweeted a pic of his jersey in his locker and then immediately took it down for some reason.

Dumping Zobrist, Monty and Grimm would clear $19 million in aav and a little less in actual paid money, fwiw. But yeah it’s not hard to see how we can fit Bryce with a reasonable small/easy trade (non-tender Grimm and let Maples, Azolay, etc. take his spot) attach Zobrist with Monty (let him start somewhere with Smyly back and hopefully a few prospects advancing his spot is filled). Or it’s not even hard to see Theo getting the green light from Ricketts to go FU mode and be able to get Bryce without having to make moves to clear salary since ~$230 in payroll isn’t crazy over the cap.

Yes, I meant digitally. There's no way he owns an optical zoom phone.

Yu's interpreter just said that Yu's agent was talking up the Cubs going back to last year's trade deadline, so, entirely unsurprisingly, suggests that we were probably involved in trade talks on him last summer.
