I assume that Sullivan is making notes for his next column on the huge blunder of Darvish wearing a plaid shirt that clashes with the pinstripes.

Based on what I've seen from Sullivan, fashion is probably the last thing that he should be critiquing.

That's this close to Theo drunknely raving about how he can't believe how little they have to pay Quintana.

yeah i'm sure jose loves hearing about how the cubs were just able to give a top 20 pitcher $126 million because he's a top 20 pitcher on a $26 million contract.

I’m sure he was very happy and felt fortunate to sign that up to 7 year $40 million contract after being a career journeyman pitcher for like 6 years and being released/given up on by 2 teams

"career journeyman" is an interesting way to describe a guy that made his major league debut at 23 and stayed with the same team for 5.5 seasons.

He wasn’t given a chance above A ball by either the Mets or Yankees, journeyman might be a bit much but at the same time he was given up on pretty easily twice before he was ever given a chance. Being able to grab some very good guaranteed money was probably very valuable to him. Plus some of that money/years were arb years bought out so that’s going to keep the total value down.

One of those "chances" was because he got popped for PED's.

Theo is so great. He said Darvish was the number one priority going into the off-season. Which of us thought that? We all figured on Cobb, I suppose. And when Chatwood signed it made Cobb seem redundant in that they are both "4s". I never thought it could be a setup for Darvish. I figured the TOR starter to replace Arietta would come by trade. Just awesome.

To be fair, he said it right in front of Darvish. Not a whole lot of alternatives there. "Well, no, of course we didn't think he was worth what he was asking at the beginning of the offseason. I mean, did you see the World Series? But once he lowered himself to basically John Lackey money...yeah sure, then we decided to start thinking about him."

It doesn't really take a ton of mental gymnastics to believe he truthfully was the top priority, in some sense. High end starting pitching was the obvious area of need and he was the best one available. Whether they thought they could afford him is kind of irrelevant as far as priority. And they were always gonna do their due diligence on him.

Theo is the greatest and everyone knows this. But this seemed like tooting his own horn a little too much. Maybe a preemptive thought against the backlash that might come if Eloy is good enough.

i definitely get it, but it's not like theo signed him to that contract and then bragged about how he got him for less than he's actually worth. he traded for a guy who brought a contract that offered salary cap flexibility in future seasons. i suppose he could've been a bit more tactful about it, but i dont interpret it as him shoving the contract into quintana's face or anything like that

How long ago did Darvish switch to going strictly out of the stretch? Was is just last year? Pre or post TJ? Did he ever give a reason for doing it, was it for health? Or simplifying mechanics? I wonder if there will be any consideration to have him go back to a windup with the bases empty to help add some deception and/or improve on his stuff (which so much of it is already so elite idk if there's a ton of room for that or really a concern to make it better).

I get going out of the stretch should lead to more easily repeatable mechanics/arm slot and overall if it's more comfortable both on the body and mentally I'm fine with it.
