Epstein had this to say after signing a five year extension in 2016:

In leaving the Red Sox, Epstein quoted football legend Bill Walsh, referencing his belief that coaches and executives shouldn’t spend more than a decade in one job, or else risk burnout or becoming stale.

“I don’t know” if this will be the last contract in Chicago, Epstein said. “It was 10 years in Boston, and that certainly seemed like the right amount of time there. I do really believe in a lot of what Walsh was writing about.

“But it’s too early to judge. We’ll see how I feel at that point. Certainly, there’s some symmetry to 10 years. But it’s just too early. So many things can happen between now and then. I’m really not thinking beyond trying to win a World Series for this organization.”

Off-seasons like this and horsefeathers employers like the RIcketts will make it easy for him to walk away when his contract ends.

At this point let Hoyer or McLeod take over. Theo did exactly what they brought him here to do, but I can certainly see a sense of complacency setting in after putting together a core that has been that good for the last 4 years. His complementary moves to fill out the roster have been disasters in the last couple years, and sorry, but David Bote isn't enough reinforcements from the minor leagues. Get someone in charge with something to prove.

McLeod? you mean the guy that is probably to blame for the awful drafts and for the farm system being as barren as it is right now? yeah, hard pass on that.

I'd be really interested in how different a Hoyer led FO would act, if much at all. Obviously we have the datapoint of his short tenure in SD which seems pretty mediocre overall. This article was written after Jed took over in Chicago and doesn't have the hindsight of 8 years. The article is so old it considers a Ludwick for prospects which include Corey Kluber trade to be a win for SD because they didn't give up much for Ludwick. They also praise him for rebuilding the farm system but in retrospect none of the guys him and McLeod drafted amounted to much. They did manage to land Rizzo in a trade of Adrian Gonzalez but other than that most of his transactions look like veteran pickups to make a below average roster average, nothing overly impressive to me.

It's hard to say how different the team would be with Hoyer leading it. I think they're pretty similar in mindset and philosophy with Theo being a little more of a risk taker. Just speculation on my part, but I'm not sure if Jed is willing to trade Gleyber for a few months of Chapman.

It's honestly really hard to discern and figure out what the differences are between Theo and Jed. They never talk about things they disagree on in interviews or differences in philosophy. You're right about his run in SD not being that impressive.

if this season goes into the crapper, I think the next guy to run the show might be coming from somewhere else, and it will be a guy who has built winners on a budget.

David Stearns just signed an extension a few months ago.

So? We just have to promote him to Super President of Baseball Operations and we can steal him from under contract.

Lester and Zobrist are on the list why?

That's insane. Lester is probably the best free agent signing the Cubs have ever had.

Andre Dawson would disagree.

trade willson and baez, fuggit. we could probably get a crazy haul for those 2 guys. focus on building for a few years from now when theo's monsters are coming off the books.

Edwards optioned to AAA, Montgomery to IL.

Monty definitely looked off, idk if he’s actually hurt or the shoulder thing he had in spring didn’t let him get 100% ready for the start of the year. But he looked like he was either hurt or needed to work on some things and Carl, yeah. May never see him again.

Carl was screwed up by the coaching staff. They spent the entire spring teaching him a new motion, which he was very successful with in spring, that was blatantly illegal and then told him to just go back to his old motion. I'm not surprised he's struggling even more than usual.

Wasn't he going to have to go back to his old motion every time somebody got on base, though?

Yes. The new motion isn’t the problem.

I'm surprised they scheduled it for June 3. That means the Angels are playing in Seattle the Sunday before, flying to Chicago for one game, then going back to Anaheim. I thought it was going to end up being on Monday Sept. 23 (Angels in Houston the day before and Anaheim the day after, so I guess that's not much of a difference).

Then again, I also see that that day will be the only day for almost an entire month that they're not on the West Coast.
