I'm setting myself up for 2015 trade deadline disappointment.

Yup... Leake and Lacky and Denard Span... Yay... :(

That'd be much better than the trade deadline.

yeah, Leake, Span, a SP of similar quality to Lackey that is not the same human being, and maybe a reliever to boot and you've got a very good team. The SP depth isn't out of this world but you make up for it by making sure the SP additions are injury free and have some proven durability. Not having a handcuff for Span isn't ideal either, but maybe you really believe in Almora or can always address that in season if he comes down with an injury, you still have all the trade assets you do now in that case.

It's not terrible I guess just disappointing. It seems like they could do much better. It doesn't seem like those moves make us a much better team, Span is a downgrade from Fowler if he can even stay healthy and those 2 pitchers are fairly mediocre.

The consensus is that Jeff Samardzija, under the guidance of Cubs pitching coach and mentor Chris Bosio, could return to his old form. What would be expected would be a 200 inning 200 strikeout number three starter. Others who will be high on the Cubs’ free agent list are Mike Leake, Scott Kazmir and John Lackey.

Samardzija will not be afraid to move on if the Cubs don’t ante up. After the pitcher met with Epstein a few weeks ago, both sides have an understanding of their mutual interest in each other. With Price signing in Boston, Samardzija is back on the front burner for the Cubs.

True to his word, the Cubs have added bullpen pitchers that are on one year deals without impacting the dollars they need for starting pitching and a center fielder. Look for the Cubs to sign a quality starter, most likely before Sunday when the winter meetings begin to complicate signings and trades. Samardzija appears to be a top consideration.

I hate how so many people just have no clue what constitutes a quality ace/#2/#3/etc. There were 14 pitchers in all of baseball last year that threw 200 innings and had 200 strikeouts. Outside of James Shields, every one of them had a WAR over 4, and outside of Shields and Hamels, every one had a WAR of at least 5. There is no way anyone should be expecting Shark to put up those numbers, but if he does, then he's either not our #3 for 2016, or he's the best #3 in a long time.

i mean, i'm not trying to defend levine's statistical knowledge at all, because it's really bad, but i'm pretty sure he just called him that because he'd slot in after arrieta and lester.

He did it in 2013 & 2014. He would have done it in 2012 as well if he hadn't been on an innings limit where he was shut down after September 8.

Yeah, wasn't criticizing you obviously. As someone else mentioned...defining pitchers by the their spot in the rotation is dumb. If Shark puts up 200 innings and 200 Ks, he'll be a really good pitcher. But I don't think it's something we should expect.

In this market? I don't think that's unreasonable. I'd do 5/$100 for him.

I would agree, give him an opt out clause and I'd be in on that deal. Have a feeling we are going to end up with Kazmir and Span/Jackson and we will hear the "we got these guys on such cheap deals, look at what everyone else went for!" narrative.

Why would you include an opt out? Opt outs are always going to be something that goes in favor the player, not the team.

In the Red Sox trade to get Kimbral... can someone give me an equivalent of our prospects to the ones Boston gave up?

I lean toward trade to add to our SP. Jiminez, McKinney, Torres, Happ, Vogelbach, Villanueva, Candelario, Contreras (and more) are all kind of blocked right now. I'm not advocating trading all of them, but the "2 year window" thing to me means that they honestly believe they can/should win WS in 2016 and 2017. So lets go all in and deal with 2018 through the draft, Cuba and other international avenues.

Because I think $45 mil a year or whatever its going to be to pay Lester and Shark in 2018 and beyond to only throw 2/5th (at best) of the season is not an attractive thought.

it was talked about yesterday with price. some posters liked it because if he's good, you get out of 2 expensive years in his mid-late 30's at the end of the contract. if he's bad or just ok, you would have had him for 5 years anyway.

Those posters are objectively wrong.

If you could get Leake for cheaper, I'd rather do that but at this point that seems unlikely.

If Shark is seriously getting 100M+ then just give Cueto his 130 and get this done with.

What about the rest of the money Cueto wants?

The last I saw was he wanted 130/140

But if he's good, those two years theoretically wouldn't be expensive, they'd be a bargain.

Billy McKinney, Gleyber Torres, Logan Watkins, Justin Steele seems pretty comparable
