I kinda soured on Jeff when he was being a dick about everything

This sentiment is so ridiculous. Samardzija was pissed that his team didn't try

basically just lazied their way toward a 97 win season

I'm sure Jeff really enjoyed the part he played.

"I don't think this team improves by trading Scott Feldman," Samardzija said. "He was one of our better pitchers. He's thrown a lot of innings, a solid dude, a solid guy in the clubhouse.

"It's a shame to see him go, and the same with Clevenger. A great dude to have around, a great teammate who played the game hard and played the right way. It's unfortunate. Just hope the guys they get in return are comparable and bring the same attitude to the field every day that those guys brought."

I just think it's funny that something that started his lament for being on the Cubs was the trade that turns out being one of the best trades in recent history. The irony is too good.

You can voice valid concerns about his performance last year. But yeah, stuff like "being a dick" is a pretty big stretch.

He came up with a team that competed. Then he got to watch while the new ownership came in and gutted the payroll and moved all the good players off the roster...

The Cubs were sold to Ricketts at the end of the 2009 season.

Postseason 2009:

Goodbye - Rich Harden, Reed Johnson, Kevin Gregg, Neal Cotts

2010 Season:

Goodbye - Ted Lilly, Ryan Theriot, Derrek Lee, Mike Fontenot, Carlos Silva

2011 Season:

Goodbye - Aramis Ramirez, Carlos Zambrano, Sean Marshall, Carlos Pena, Tyler Colvin, Kosuke Fukudome, Jim Hendry

2012 Season:

Goodbye - Ryan Dempster, Geovany Soto, Marlon Byrd, Kerry Wood, Reed Johnson, Paul Maholm, Jeff Baker, Bryan LaHair, Randy Wells

2013 Season:

Goodbye - Matt Garza, Alfonso Soriano, Scott Feldman, David DeJesus, Tony Campana, Carlos Marmol, Scott Hairston

That is a long slow slide out of relevance. It's like watching what the Phillies are doing right now. And every time the front office would acquire a player that would break out and start performing (Feldman and Maholm notably, and Jason Hammel in 2014) you knew that player was going to be gone by the deadline. So why bother getting excited about anything?

He was ready to go somewhere that was wanting to compete, and I can't blame him. It was frustrating for us to watch the team. I can only imagine how frustrating it must have been to be living in those conditions.

nobody was forcing him to say stupid things to make himself look like a meathead dimwit, and it's perfectly fine for some to be residually annoyed at the guy for those times he sounded like a meathead dimwit

i'm not sure it's all that different than the universal Theriot hate on here

Also I think its funny that Shark has never been part of a winning team other than the 2 months he was on the team in 2008 and the 20 games he was on the team in 2009. Obviously 2010-2013 the Cubs were in rebuilding mode. In 2014 he was on another rebuilding Cubs team to start, got traded to the A's, who actually played worse than the Cubs after the trade, played several games under .500 ball from the moment he was traded on and barely made the playoffs where they lost in the WC game without him appearing. Then he goes to the White Sox who everyone has high expectations for, they fall on their faces while across town his former team is winning 97 games.

The guy that wanted so badly to win here never experienced it elsewhere while the team he left headed to the NLCS.

probably the happiest year of his life though, because they tried OH HOW THEY TRIED

It's astounding how big a [expletive] you've become.

My concern isn't much about whether he's an [expletive]. Although I do sometimes laugh when I think about Matt Garza's convo with him after Garza left.

If Shark is good, I'd be happy to have him. It's just weird to think about giving a guy 15 to 17 million per year after he was one of the worst starting pitchers in all of baseball last year (which might not be accurate, but has to be close, right?) In Bosio we all trust, but damn what if Shark just sucks now and we pay him like he doesn't?

It would be kinda funny to resign both of the guys we traded away for Addison Russell. It would be like we got him for free almost. That being said I don't really want Shark I think there are better options out there that we should explore first.

He was nowhere near the worst pitcher in baseball last year. He had a 2.7 fWAR (39th in MLB),

His RA9-WAR was 68th of 78 qualified starters. There's reason for optimism(I think it was North who had a pretty compelling blog post to that effect), but the results themselves were downright bad last year. He gave up 4 or more runs in 17 of 32 starts.

Shark, Leake, and Maeda are the 3 guys on the SP market available for only money that I like the most below the Price/Greinke/Zimmermann tier of quality/salary range. With Shark and Leake I have irrational reasons not to like either(my Shark feelings mirror sneaky's), but if they add one of them and trade for a SP that's more than fine with me.

Is it at all possible Shark takes a 1 year deal to try and get it back together and cash in next offseason?

Unless he despises Cooper and/or the White Sox at this point, I have to think he would have taken the qualifying offer if that were the case. He turns 31 in January, another year works against him as much as it works for him, in all likelihood.

I'd be surprised if he got more than $12 or 13 million a year.

I think he probably does.

Not that I think that that makes him likely to take a 1 year deal.
