I'll take that as a no. But if broken down like this:

Baez, Edwards, McKinney for a few months of Upton with intent to extend.

Soler, Castro, Coghlan, Wood for Kemp who's been very good the past month or so) and Shields.

I actually toyed with the idea of adding Gyorko to our pot, but I don't know how down on him they are or how up on him anyone else is.

oh, well, when you put it like that...

The commissioner would veto this trade because the Cubs would be getting $50 million back.

Also, who would fill all the holes if the Cubs gave up a third of the team for three guys?

What if we broke it down like this:

Baez, Edwards, McKinney, Soler, Castro, Coghlan for Kemp

Wood for Upton and Shields

That way, we're really kicking their ass in half of the trade.

Cubs wouldn't take over the full salaries. Then we'd really be getting screwed. In terms of cash, good GMs will manage to even it out.

As for filling holes, we're giving up 2 starting outfielders for 2 starting outfielders. We're adding a starting pitcher and giving up a reliever whose spot can be effortlessly filled. As for SS, for now, Alcantara can fill in. Maybe LaStella 2B/Russell SS once there's confrontation that LaStella exists. I can't imagine his production being much worse than Castro's has lately. And while I personally believe that both Castro and Baez can rebound to become key pieces for years to come, if we could flip them for guys who can be now, and still have plenty of guys to carry us into the next decade, I think it's worthwhile.

Maybe I'm overvaluing 5 years of Matt Kemp. But the fact is that we're managing to win with about a month minimal production from pretty much everybody we'd been relying on for offense With Upton. at the 3-4 spot and Kemp at either 2, 5, or 6 and Shields as a 5 starter, I really like our odds. And tell me you don't like the look of:

Fowler

Kemp

Rizzo

Upton

Bryant

Schwarber

Russell

P

Alcantara/Herrara/LaStella

Arrieta

Lester

Hammel

Hendricks

Shields

I just reviewed Kemp's fangraphs page and he is even worse than I thought. His defense is so bad that last year, with an OPS of 850, he was only worth 1.3 wins. For 20 million dollars. And if the Cubs traded for him they'd have the honor of continuing to pay him 20 million a year for the next four years. He has no trade value. They would give him to the Cubs for nothing if Theo asked.

But but but...big names guys!

Let's ignore that Kemp is a broken down corner OF who is an absolutely horrendous defender.

Or ignore that Justin Upton is no where near the player that people seem to think he is

Or ignore that James Shields has alarming peripherals this year

Or ignore that all 3 make gobs upon gobs of money and 2 of them are signed for at least the next 4 seasons.

So for the benefit of those 3 guys, you get to partially gut your system and kill your payroll flexibility..and you send them cash!

He is. But he's not great and another below average defender. Not worth Baez, Edwards and McKinney for only 3 guaranteed months.

Hey guys we are looking for big names, how about we trade for David Wright? We might get him for a discount because of his degenerative back condition. Lets give them Baez, Schwarber and Edwards and throw in some cash just to get the deal done.

What would it take to get Johan Santana from Toronto? He hasn't pitched in 2 years, so his arm should be rested. Baez, McKinney and cash should get the deal done. Talk about bolstering your pitching staff.

I seriously had to check who was posting this.

I know there is no way but I would love to have Todd Frazier. Control through next year on a 2 year $12M contract. Move Bryant to LF, whatever.

I'd prefer to build a time machine and bring back 1998 Kerry Wood.

But that's just me.

Yes, but would you trade Schwarber for 1998 Kerry Wood?

I'd rather get steroid Bonds than any player in baseball history. God that would be fun to watch.

Nottingham is a 2013 6th rounder C who has killed the ball in Low and High A this year. Mengden was a 4th rounder last year who was very good in Low A but struggled since being promoted to High A.
