Perhaps it's time that all these so-called douches be brought together for some mega-douche super-team: Harper, Puig, Latos, Braun, AJ. Ozzie Guillen can manage. They can round up guys like Milton Bradley, Elijah Dukes, Josh Sale, and Zambrano who douched themselves out of baseball. I bet Manny would be up for another comeback. They could travel the world, barnstorming and knocking up strippers.

Aside from his disappointing stats this season, what does Puig do that pisses people off so much? Legitimately asking, because I don't pay much attention to the Dodgers. Is he just a total dick? Is it overblown Starlin-like "mental mistakes"?

Yeah, I don't get it. Easily my favorite and most fun player to watch play baseball aside from trout.

He's been fairly pedestrian this year, and pretty much the entire second half of last year. I don't hate him (or the idea of trading for him), but I would be very hesitant to give much up for him at this point.

It might be buying low, but the Dodgers know that, too.

For some reason I was thinking that Cargo has been bad a lot longer than 1 single injury riddled season.

Even for a Rockie, his splits are startling

H: 326/384/599

A: 258/313/440

He does have 7 HR in just 15 games at Wrigley fwiw

Hell, that .258/.313/.440 looks downright Ruthian compared to our lineup the past month or so.

My negative feelings toward Puig are irrational. I couldn't care less if a player is an douche, as long as he's good that's what's important. And while Puig has been good, for some reason I just don't think he's as good as he's hyped up to be. And like IMB said, it will cost a ton to get him. He gets treated like he's in the same rarified air as Bryce Harper and Mike Trout, and he simply isn't, but that won't stop the Dodgers from probably trying to coax a package out of someone who thinks he is.

I kinda feel like this needs to be a thing.

Yeah, I know about the Coors thing but I feel like he'd rake at Wrigley and a .750+ OPS on the road isn't that bad in this depressed run environment.

Ha! I originally wrote something else, then changed it to douche.

I had brought him up before but no one really talked about it... what about Jed Lowrie? He's just done 4 rehab games and is getting reevaluated, but he went 3-10 with a double and two REBI so he had nice showing coming back from the injury. He's probably due to come back within a week or so. They likely move him to 3B despite not playing there regularly since 2011, but outside of that they have nowhere to play him with Correa in beast mode and Altuve being Altuve.

Would something like Underwood + Villanueva be enough to pry Lowrie away? He's signed through 2017 and he'd be a perfect fit for the Cubs. Would give the Cubs the incentive and flexibility to move Castro, too.

It's no coincidence he's in rehab right now. That's where his mail gets forwarded.

At this moment, we are a very manageable 2.5 games behind that 2nd WC, and the team ahead of us is red hot. But we have 4 games against them next week, which follow 3 games vs. the team that we're 6 games behind for the other WC.

This crucial stretch begins 3 days after the deadline. On one hand, this would be the time to make that big trade. But on the other, it would suck to go all in on a rental and then end up being swept or going 3-4 against the Giants, knocking us out of contention for all intents and purpose. But the bottom line is that we need to string together some wins leading up to it, or it might not matter.

If we add a rental type pitcher, whether its Latos, Kennedy, Leake, Haren, or whoever....It costs us depth guys, which we're set up for. I'm not going to cry if Vogelbach or Zagunis or guys like them wave bye bye to us.

I'm hopeful for a longer term guy still and a stopgap reliever. I think I've given up on adding a hitter now though.

I'd trade Vogelbach or Zagunis for a rental, but it would need to be something of significance. I'm not saying Price or Upton, but something like a Zobrist (off the table, I know.) For a 5th starter upgrade, I'd give up a handful of rule 5 eligibles, such as Torrez, Paniaqua, Candelario and/or depth pieces like Lake or Szczur

I don't think the Astros are willing to finish out the year with Valbuena as their starting third baseman. He's been fine in the field, and for a while his incredibly odd bating stats were good enough. While he still leads the team in HRs, he hasn't hit one in more than a month. Meanwhile his average remains below .200 and he has an equally atrocious OBP. Lowry represents and immediate offensive upgrade at 3B at no cost to the Astros.

I think the Astros will add another pitcher and maybe a low rent corner outfielder to hold down Springer's spot until the end of August. They'll use their deep farm system, not major leaguers, to make those deals.

Why are people concerned with dumping Rule 5 guys who won't get drafted anyway

It's a way to convince yourself it's OK to trade prospects without ruining your virtue.

So it is the trade-version of "just the tip"?

So that's what you do with an accumulation of prospects.

Exactly, which is why they won't be trading a major leaguer like Jed Lowrie per the OP. That doesn't mean that Jed Lowrie wouldn't be a good fit with the Cubs. Just that I seriously doubt he's available.

This would sure be a good time to have a Jake Fox or Bryan LaHair stashed in AAA who could come up and hit everything in site for about a month.

Or, you know, bring up a legit baseball player like Schwarber to do the same thing.

There's actually a difference. Guys like Fox and LaHair were so good for a short time because they had the go-ahead to swing at every pitch until they get that straight fastball to knock all the way to Jupitor, at least until pitchers realized that they could just toss the ball wherever and they'd flail at it like a hyperactive 9 year old going after a Piñata.

But with an actual prospect like Schwarber, you want them to approach every at bat as a learning experience as well as an opportunity to drive in runs.

So Junior Lake?

I think we've already juiced that one. Besides, Junior Lake at least looks like a professional athlete. We're talking an, oafish, hulkish individual. One who looks out of place on the field. Justin Bour would have been just what the doctor ordered. If Dan Vogelbach's somehow around in 5 years.
