Brewers have made Carlos Gomez avaliable.

Give them McKinney and Vogelbach. They're cool with fat first baseman who can't play defense.

I don't think that'll do it. Let's do Schwarber and Skulina

My soul would die a little if Schwarber became a star for the Brewers.

Orioles fall out of race, what about Adam Jones+Chris Tillman? Baez, Almora/Mckinney, Edwards, Vogelbach?

They're only 4 games out of the East and 3 out of the first WC spot, doubt they fall out far enough by the 31st to decide to sell

I'm beginning to resign myself to the fact that there isn't going to be a huge move at the deadline. There's not only a lack of true sellers and therefore options and prices are bound to be even more inflated than normal, but the season has taken a toll on the assets the Cubs have to give.

Baez is unlikely to fetch the value the Cubs would need to trade him, especially since he might not start playing real games til post-deadline. With him a non-option, Castro is even more unlikely to be dealt, and he's tanked his value anyway. Schwarber not only has made himself valuable enough to require a huge return in trade, but dealing him now hurts the MLB team immediately while Montero is on the DL. Vogelbach is hurt, Alcantara has struggled at AAA, Edwards is a full time reliever now, and while McKinney has done well he's not going to lead a trade for a stud.

To me it all adds up to trading for a rental to bolster the rotation, and leaving a more significant move for the offseason. That is, unless they want to try and buy low on a starter with multiple years of team control. The threshold to being an improvement("better than Clayton Richard") is low enough that they can gamble on someone with greater upside but lower present value and still get immediate benefit.

I wouldn't mind that guy being Jorge De La Rosa, I think he's a good/reasonable/gettable target. If we took on his remaining salary ($12.5 mil next year) I wonder if something like Lake or Szczur and Black would get it done?

The situation that's interesting to me is Arizona. They now have RDLR, Anderson, Ray, Hellickson, Corbin and Collmenter, plus Bradley rehabbing and Webster in the wings. Who knows how they value those guys or who they might want to trade though.

de la Rosa has some interesting qualities(non-Coors bump, cutter usage), but he's also 34 and doesn't offer control/upside over mid-level free agency, so his 2016 contract year isn't as enticing.

Just read a Rosenthal report that Scott Van Slyke might be optioned to AAA with Crawford coming back. I would flip [expletive] if we got him here. His power is real and he could platoon in LF with Coghlan against lefties and play a respectable enough CF against righties. If Fowler rights the ship then he's a platoon in left with power off the bench but might be redundant with Deno

Take it FWIW (I can't imagine they'd flat out rule out anyone who is a 2016 FA)

John Arguello ‏@CubsDen 12m12 minutes ago

Heard this: In addition to reported interest in Hamels, Cubs scouting James Shields and Tyson Ross. Have no interest in rentals this year.

For those asking on return, what I heard is no current minor leaguer is off limits, but Cubs want to keep their young MLB core in tact.

Ross really scares me with his slider dependence and BB rates. But he certainly is intriguing. No real interest in Shields unless they are picking up a big part of his contract or giving him away for nothing for taking on his contract.

Looking at the standings..... Detroit is 10 games out of the central and 4 games back of the 2nd WC but have 3 teams in front of them. I wonder if they'd make Price available if they have a bad week-10 days here leading up to the deadline. I guess root for Detroit losses this week for the off chance they'd deal him.

Luckily that was Arguello otherwise I'd have to give up my backup hope of Kazmir and Zobrist

yeah

any updates on kazmir's health since that one scare? i saw where he said he felt ok.

i think we were reported to be in on zobrist just today by gammons? heard mention of it on the radio

The A's are 5th in runs scored and 10th in runs allowed. Why are they presumed to be sellers?

Because their losses are already banked and it's hard to be as good as they will need to be to get back in the race

Ask and you might receive...

http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/13292841/detroit-tigers-preparing-make-david-price-yoenis-cespedes-available-trade-deadline

With such prized pieces as staff ace David Price and outfielder Yoenis Cespedes set to become free agents at season's end, the Tigers have incentive to flip their most coveted players for big returns before potentially losing them for nothing in free agency. The report cites team sources familiar with strategy plans who assert the organization is poised to do just that.

Dombrowski is not tipping his hand about his deadline plans despite the tension that comes with being so close to a playoff spot with a star-laden roster that has shown in the recent seasons how quickly it can put together a winning streak.

A friend of mine who works for the Reds is convinced that the Reds and Cubs are talking about Marlon Byrd. Personally, I don't see how he fits on the roster.

He has a vesting option at 550 plate appearances. He is currently at 283.

Denorfia has done really well in that role so I don't really think it is likely. Byrd would bring more power for sure, but the OBP is sub .300

Again, this is not a rumor, just something my "thinks" is being discussed.

I think the idea of a sellers market is going away.

Price

Hamels

Cueto

Shark

Shields

Kazmir

Kennedy

Leake

Gallardo

Latos

Haren

Lohse

That's not counting guys like Ross, Cashner, Miley, Iwakuma or anyone else that has been thrown out there at some point.

These teams are buying pitching

Cubs

Dodgers

Cards

Giants

Orioles

Blue Jays

Astros

Angels

Rangers

Twins

Royals

The Yankees don't seem to be doing anything, the Mets don't need pitching. The Pirates seem to be after hitting too.

At any rate, there's plenty to go around at this point, we'll get a very good arm soon.

They just got Nova back after Adam Warren filled in admirably, plus they've got Severino waiting in the wings who is torching AAA right now.

Sabathia has been an embarrassment, but they won't pull him out of the rotation.

I would a million times over rather pay for extra years at similar financial cost(in seasons where we're supposed to be McDucking in TV money, no less) for a FA like Price or Zimmermann or even Samardzija than pay the player cost it will supposedly require to earn the right to pay Cole Hamels 25 million for his age 32-35 seasons. If we have to bite the bullet and pay for decline, let's only pay once in dollars.

Well there's a bit of strength in numbers on the FA side, plus those aren't the only two options for adding rotation help to an already good rotation.

The short version of my point is that Cole Hamels killed my parents and I hate his old stupid face.
