Ewwwww. Wishful thinking on my part. Guess I should have realized it would be weird as hell for Carlos Gomez to be making, like, $18 million a year right now.

Getting Carlos Gomez would be pretty great.

For what it would take to get them I would rather have Parra. He's been more productive this year anyway and we're talking about a rental.

Who, Gerardo? Gomez seemingly has been better than him whether you go by Fangraphs or BR, he's younger and he's signed through next year.

Right, meaning he's going to cost a lot more to get on top of the in division premium you'll probably have to pay. Parra is a good fit in just about every way.

They're going to want one of our top prospects and change for Gomez. I'm not sure Gomez would be better for the rest of this year and he's already been hurt multiple times this year. Plus he hits righty and Fowler has outperformed him from the right side. Parra is also currently ahead of Gomez in all of AVG/OBP/SLG.

Maybe you keep Parra as a stop gap for a year or 2. I have zero confidence in Fowler from the left side of the plate anymore. He's swinging at terrible pitches from that side. Maybe he has Mike Olt disease in his right eye or something.

Stopgap to who? Yes, Gomez is going to cost more because he's younger and better, and the Cubs need a good CF. Parra is practically just a body.

Gomez has had nagging injuries this season, but when he's healthy, which for the most part he has been the last 3 seasons (148, 147, and 137 games [and he seems like he'll be on his way to around 125-140 games this season if he stays healthy the rest of the year]), he's one of the best CF in the game, and he only costs $9 million next season. There's not a lot I wouldn't give up for Carlos Gomez. I'd give them McKinney and not think twice, and extend him for a few more years if he's agreeable with it.

I'm guessing they would ask for more than McKinney. If he can be had for a reasonable price, like McKinney, I'd do it.

If Cameron Maybin is available he needs to be on this team right now. LD% way up from 17 to 23.3%,FB% down 3.0%, Soft% down 5.9% and Med% up 11.4%. He's spraying the ball more to the opposite field than he ever has, 30.6% up from 23.5%. If the Cubs can fix his defense like they've done with Dexter than you could have a 4 or 5 win CF going forward.

Starlin Castro for Andrew Cashner...which team would say no?

The Padres, and they probably wouldn't think about it much either.

The Brewers really have no motivation to move Gomez at this time. They're not going anywhere this year, but they still have him for next.

*Warning: follow up ramble*

They're stuck with Braun and Garza, they have some decent young players to work with, and Aramis and Lohse come off their books after the season, giving them a decent chunk of change to work with. In Lind, Parra, and K-Rod, they have some decent rentals to swap for prospects. I'm not saying they're going to keep him, just that if they trade him, it's likely going to be on their own terms, not a case of taking the best offer just to get something. And as a small market team, they don't have the luxury of taking for a few years while they build. Probably not a good enough front office to make it work either.

he's oft-injured and has a -1.2 RA9-WAR this year

He's been worse than I thought this year, but he was pretty good each of the last two seasons, is still locked up through next year and is cheaper than Castro. Maybe if SD is content to sell low on Cashner and gamble that Castro isn't the black hole of suck he's been 2 of the last 3 years, I guess they'd consider it. If I were in their shoes I wouldn't.

From MLBTR:

One person familiar with the Reds thinking tells Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com (on Twitter) that he believes there’s at least a 50/50 chance Jay Bruce is traded in July. Recently, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports heard that Bruce is as “as good a bet as anyone” on the team to be dealt. Bruce, 28, is controllable for three more years and offers an established power bat.

Bruce would certainly look good in our lineup. I'm hoping the Cubs go big at the deadline before some of our trade chips (Castro, Baez, Alacantara, etc.) lose all of their trade value. I think there are teams out there that might be interested in Castro and Baez.

My wish list is focused on three pieces right now that should come at low/moderate cost, but I believe could really help the club in the second half:

1) Ian Kennedy - like most, I'm in favor of adding some depth to the starting rotation. Kennedy has had a rough first half of the season, but his peripherals aren't bad and he's been pitching well for the last month. He will be a free agent at the end of the season and I believe San Diego would be willing to trade him for a reasonable prospect or two. He could slot into our rotation as a #4/5 with some upside.

2) Ben Zobrist - I've always liked Zobrist and feel his versatility could serve us well. The tricky part about improving our offense is that we still need to give our young players time to develop and work through their struggles. Insert Zobrist and he can spot guys like Russell, Soler, Castro and Coghlan throughout the summer. As we get into September, perhaps he takes over everyday at a position if one of our younger guys has hit a wall. He also provides great insurance in case of an injury. I'm assuming Zobrist would cost us the most in terms of prospect(s) amongst the targets on my wish list.

3) Lefty reliever (Diekman, etc.) - I like the way our bullpen is shaping up for the second half of the season, but it would be nice to add a situational lefty that we can match up when needed. Russell is serviceable at times, but that's a spot in the bullpen we should be able to upgrade at minimal cost.

As for CF, I may be in the minority but I'm willing to give Dexter Fowler some more rope. His track record of getting on base is so strong and I'd give him a chance to turn the corner in the second half. We shall see.

lol 20.8% HR/FB, how in the world do you manage that with half your starts at Petco

Bryant & Rizzo ought to chip in for a plane ticket to Cincy in order to pitch to them in the HR Derby.

First off dont get your hopes up about a new Bat at the deadline Jed Theostien pretty much said its more than likely not going to happen

This probably wont happen at the trade deadline, but more of a winter meetings move, but i like AJ Pollock! I wonder if he is on the wish list for the FO during the offseason

That particular deal doesn't really make sense for the Padres, but you really need to stop acting baffled by the idea that Castro still has value as a trading chip.

Because they traded away Trea Turner, and Alexi Amarista is their SS. I think I posted that when we were unsure how much time Hammel will miss; I actually kind of doubt the Cubs would do that trade right now.

btw, I get that everyone wants to fire Castro into the sun and doesn't think he's worth anything, but Cashner is only under control through 2016, and as sneaky said, is oft-injured and isn't having a great year. His value isn't at its peak right now either. I don't think it's a stretch at all that he could be had for Starlin.
