I wonder why you would have chosen OPS there ...

What stat do you prefer?

I personally like HR/FB ratio. Colvin's is completely unsustainable unless he's on par with the Adam Dunns and Albert Pujols' of the world. Combine that with one of the worst zone recognitions in the league and I think there's a very high likely hood of regression.

Colvin's HR/FB will probably go down. If he played 10 years, he probably would have a couple that were up that high but most will be lower.

He also does need to improve his BB/K ratio. His BB ratio is poor but not absurdly poor (Corey Hart, Aramis Ramirez, Carl Crawford, Adrian Beltre are just some examples of guys who have survived with worse BB ratios in their careers than Colvin has had). The strikeouts have to come down though. His strikeouts were better after the All-Star break than before. If he can continue to lower that into the 23-25 percent range which would be more in range with his minor league numbers than he can be successful even when his home runs/FB drop.

It's not absurd to put Colvin in as a starter. He's not a great choice for starter because he's probably going to be around league average with more chance of a downside than upside. But it's not like corner OF has been that big of a premium offensive position lately. If he did put up an .800+ OPS, that would be just fine at any of the OF spots even as a starter and even with a relatively low OBP. It would be a position the Cubs would have to upgrade if he didn't get any better as he got expensive but to get cheap league average production is fine for one spot.

If Tyler Colvin were a car, the problem isn't that he's a broken down Gremlin. He's more like a very serviceable used Corolla. Great bang for the buck. The problem is that everyone either thinks he's a brand new Corvette, or the already mentioned Gremlin.

In the end I expect his career to wind up showing him to have been a decent outfielder who puts up decent numbers. I hope the Cubs get many years of cheap production out of him and then let someone else drive that Corolla into the ground.

No, not many people think he's worthless. No one is saying that. The problem is that people are afraid that Hendry & Co. view him as a cornerstone when he's just a role player.

Tyler Colvin isn't horrible, he's just not as good as a lot of people think. Unfortunately, some of those people seem to be the most important ones.

I think this topic should be separated from Garza.

With that said, I think Colvin should start against RH'ers with that time being divided between Soriano and Byrd depending on which one is more productive and who is hotter at the time. I have no doubt that Colvin will hit RHers better than Byrd and unless something happens, better than Soriano too.

I'm not agreeing or disagreeing, but with Soriano's contract there's no way they platoon him.

Neither can Marlon Byrd. Fukudome isn't any worse out there and Colvin, if given time, could be plausible in CF.

Byrd is a pretty solid defender, i would say slightly underrated if anything.

Colvin can't play CF, both Byrd and Fukudome are serviceable out there. Neither have great range. As far as benching Soriano against RHers, with Quade, he won't play favorites based on salary as no one in the FO has the luxury to pick that over current production.

Wait I missed the part where Quade will ignore players' salary. Can u lnk me plz?

No link, but he's not the guy to play him if he conts to regress. It should be noted that I believe he still hit RHers better than Byrd.

What evidence is there that Quade would do something 99% of managers wouldn't do?

No proof. I've talked to those (mainly scouts) who know him and he's not like that. He will play the best guys. If Soriano or Byrd struggle, there's little doubt in my mind that Colvin will get more ABs.

Hahahaha If that happens, then we just need to tank this season and they'll fire Quade... Yeah I'm sure Colvin will take some ABs from both of those guys, but I can't see Soriano or Byrd playing less than 150 games if they're healthy.

I feel like Brett Jackson will be an everyday player for us by June.

That's what I'm hoping for, but realistically I'm thinking the end of July/August for B Jax... Then we'll have our starting CF for 2012. What's gonna be scary is the OF for 2012 is Soriano/B Jax/Colvin with Byrd as the 4th OF.

I think that Colvin will have to "earn" a spot for 2012. If he does, there's a chance we could trade Byrd, I suppose.

I like to think that, but they're basically giving the starting RF spot to Colvin this year over Fukudome. What make you think that they won't do that next year over Byrd? I just hope Colvin just bombs as a starter, but does well as a "spot starter/4th OF" role that it'll make Hendry think "Ok, he's not starter material anymore." But I don't think that'll happened cuz Hendry LOVE those types of guys... (Colvin/Jacque Jones/Burnitz) It always seem like they're starting for the Cubs when they should be the 4th OF.

WTF ?? You hope Colvin bombs as a starter so you can be right ?? What a ridiculous thing to post.
