The NL Central is loaded with question marks and this trade moves the Cubs up to the status of "teams that could win IF".

We were that before making this trade and this doesn't put us all that much closer - especially if adding Garza's money makes us more likely to move Fuku.

This is just speculation on my part, but we were already really close to the budget before adding Garza's $6 million. Does this trade put us over the budget and does it mean that we now have to trade somebody like Fukudome? If so, then we might have hurt our chances of competing this year by going from Fuku to Colvin in right field. I might be wrong, or we might have traded him anyway, but if adding Garza costs us Fuku, then we might have gotten slightly worse overall, for 2011 at least.

Bruce Miles:

He said he had been working on the deal since right before the winter meetings and that he and Rays GM Andrew Friedman had become good friends during the process. Hendry also said Greg Maddux, his special assistant, had signficant input in the deal.

As far as trading Archer, Hendry said: "The price of poker is high."

There are some good Hendry and Garza quotes in there.

Still, Garza isn't exactly a top-flight pitcher and the Cubs gave up four significant talents to bring him in

"Four significant talents?" Come on.

They must be counting Sam Fuld twice rather than ignoring him altogether.

Except, that is not Matt Garza.

The Daily Herald ran the same picture with their story. To be fair, it was an error by the photographer and stayed with the photo. Still, it should have been caught by someone by both papers.

I can't imagine what process would be in place that would allow a paper to catch this.

•MLB.com's Peter Gammons says the Rangers thought they'd be able to acquire Robinson Chirinos from the Cubs, then package him with Derek Holland, Engel Beltre, and Frank Francisco to get Matt Garza from the Rays. Texas would have kicked in some money to offset Francisco's salary.

Thats interesting. I could be way off here, but it sounds to me like our equivelent of Robinson Chirinos, Sean Marshall, a healthy Angel Guzman, and Hak Ju Lee or even Junior Lake.

From Levine

The Cubs did not want to include Chris Archer and Hak-Ju Lee in the Garza deal. The Rays asked for either Chris Archer or Trey McNutt. The Cubs feel McNutt was the better of the two and decided to let Archer go.

# The Cubs consider Trey McNutt a superior prospect to Chris Archer.

The Cubs are projecting Chris Carpenter and Trey McNutt to be in the rotation in the near future.

None. The onus is on the photographer (or an editor at that paper) to alert AP if there is a mistake. Then AP issues a correction alert and resends the photo.

Sounds very similar to package we gave up. Derek Holland was their #2 (behind Neftali Feliz), and Beltre will be in their top 5. And Holland has more value than anyone we gave up.

i think more papers should do things like that. i think it would have been awesome to run a picture of a black basketball player from 1997.

Could care less really about the other guys in the trade, basically this trade was Archer and Lee for Garza. I really would've liked to see an infield of Castro and Lee, but you gotta give up talent to get talent. Unfortunetly those were the 2 guys they really wanted and Archer was a must have to get the trade done or they would've traded Garza to Texas. Prospects are prospects though, and never know how they'll pan out until they hit the majors, we all seen how highly touted and untouchable Rich Hill and Felix Pie were and got offered some big names for them and then their value hit rock bottom and they were worthless. so I doubt Hendry wanted to chance that again. Some people like the trade and some don't. We get a front line starter who's only 27 with control for 3 years and can always flip him for prospects if we choose to later on. I was kinda ehhh at first with what we gave up, but now Im happy with the trade since we have a proven major league front line starter in the rotation.

Does anyone here think that this trade paves the way for Z getting traded at some point during this season, perhaps at the deadline if the Cubs are out of it?

Not with his contract.

This would be true if we had traded for a frontline starter. Unfortunately, we traded for Matt Garza.

I totally agree. I don't like all of the comments about Garza had better step up to become an ace or else the trade is a failure. It would be great if he does, but a solid #2 or #3 starter for the next 4 or 5 years sounds good to me. Zambrano, Dempster, and Lilly were never considered "aces", but provided solid, steady pitching over the years. I would say that more than half the teams don't have a true "ace".

No argument that he is still owed alot ($36mil) but that is for this year and next, correct? The Yankees were willing to throw a boatload at Lee to sign him, and one would think Z might waive his NTC to reunite with Rothschild. the Cubs could always throw in some cash as well.

A 27-year old guy who has put up solid numbers starting for contenders over the last 4-5 years sounds like a frontline starter to me.

Take it however you want, but I sorta know someone in the Cubs org (someone that directly reports to Hendry), and I was told that Hendry believes, based on what him and his scouts have seen, that the Cubs just acquired a Cy Young caliber ace for the next decade.

PS, I will never be able to get scoops on trades or whatever because of this source. I hardly talk to them unless I bump into them. I also don't think this person is directly involved in transactions, they are more of an assistant to Hendry. You could probably figure out the who it is, but I don't feel like revealing it

You're missing the point. I'm saying we gave up too much talent if Garza doesn't at least give us the numbers he did in Tampa or better. If he comes over and pitches pretty well, that's great but it still means we gave up too much talent for him. If he comes over and becomes an elite pitcher, then I look like an idiot. If he regresses at all to his peripherals, then we gave up too much talent even if he still is a nice pitcher. That's the point I was making.

Thanks for the info and that's good to hear. I figured Hendry must have seen something that he really loved in Garza and was hoping he wasn't just looking at a good ERA/WHIP and assuming he'd continue to be good.

Maybe he also hits well with runners in scoring position.
