I think that if the reports are true from Levine that we only have 3-5 mill left to play with, Hendry's hands could be tied until he unloads Fukudome/Gorzelanny or whoever else he may be trying to dump, in order to make a signing like Webb(who'l probably be guaranteed more than 5 mill assuming his doc is right anyway) or even a trade for Garza, who probably is going to be making 5-6 mill in arb.

Who says he has to get rid of the money BEFORE taking it on though? This is the same crap he did with Sosa and how the Cubs ended up w/ Jeromy Burnitz while legit RFs passed them by. I can't imagine if he only has 5Mil in room that he can't go over that ever between now and when the season starts.

Hendry doesn't strike me as a guy willing to be that risky.

No idea and that's a great question, but that exact scenario is what made me bring it up this way. No clue whether or not he's allowed to work around the payroll DURING the offseason, as long as it's at a certain number by the end of it, but if he just doesn't like doing it that way, you're absolutely right: It's stupid and he loses out on lots of potential players by waiting.......

I don't see it as being risky if he's dead set on getting rid of Fukudome or someone else. Someone will take some salary off of this team (not Zambrano or Soriano), whether you like the return or not is a different story. If he wants to get rid of money, he can.

Levine just made an excellent point in his chat today about Garza: The Rays have played this out perfectly and with the Yanks and Rangers missing out on Lee, the Cubs will have a very hard time making this type of deal without severely overpaying at this point, with the added teams now in the mix.

Exactly. This is a scenario where if the Cubs really wanted someone like Webb or Garza, they should have done everything possible to complete the deal quickly.

I don't know why Hendry was fooling around, especially with Webb. He has to have medical records and input from doctors at this point. Either [expletive] or get off the pot. Now, if we do sign him, it's going to cost a hell of a lot more.

How will we know when he's off the pot?

Is he going to hold a press conference to let the world know we're not signing Brandon Webb?

It is still a risk since the most leverage anybody has in negotiations is the ability to walk away from the table. Taking on more salary than he is allowed to spend this year puts him in a position where he has to shed contracts. Going into this offseason he knew payroll was going down, but most of that was taken care of by money coming off the books.

Not trying to defend Hendry, but all this speculation about him delaying a decision is just speculation. What if the Rays really wanted a boatload of top prospects (stated earlier in this topic) and/or Webb wanted more money/more years than Hendry was willing to give?

Trade possibilities like these are why I am glad I don't have any strong connection to any of our young boys besides Castro. Jimbo is going to trade them away.

Other than the Pierre trade, name the prospects you are sorry he traded away.

Bobby Hill. The return was awful.

I never said I was sorry about former prospects being traded away. Where did you get that from? I don't have any strong connection to any of the new ones being traded away either. I only view Castro as an untouchable right now. I don't understand the need for clarification, but there it is.

Gahhhhh, I wanted bobby hill to work out so bad. I remember Gammons saying he would be a .300 hitting second baseman for a decade and I almost wet myself.

I wasnt around here at the time, but just out of curiosity, how did people feel about trading Justin Jones for the remains of Nomar Garciaparra?

The level of excitement of getting Nomar far outweighed any regret over any prospects. Still the most excited I have ever been in a trade. But I was a huge Nomar fan before the deal too.

we were ecstatic. especially because we kept matt clement, who we all thought was a goner.

I can still remember that trade like it was yesterday. I was watching ESPN right as the trading deadline passed. Peter Gammons came on saying the trade didn't go through. 5 min later they say Nomar was traded to the Cubs and we didn't have to give up Matt Clement in the deal. I was jumping around like an idiot.

I didn't pay much attention to trade rumors back then, so when it was announced during the game I couldn't believe it. Easily the most excited I've ever been about a trade or FA signing.

Yeah, Nomar was a great day. I don't think I've ever been that excited, except maybe how I felt when we won the divisional series in Atlanta. It's definitely my top regular season moment.

Someone should bump the Nomar thread from time to time, it was epic.

I wish Wills wasn't included among the list of names to get Alfonseca and Clement. The 03 rotation for one year would be up there with the best of all-time with Willis instead of Estes. Wish they wouldve grabbed Guzman instead.

Bought a Bobby Hill Cubs jersey before you could actually get one. Had it made up and crossed my fingers he wouldn't change uniform numbers once he stuck in the bigs. It was worse than that. He changed uniforms entirely. Getting Aramis in that deal sort of made up for it, though.

Getting Nomar was amazing, but that trade sure was confusing when it happened. Vaguely remember the connecting points at this point, though. Didn't we trade Justin Jones and one other player to the Expos to get Doug Minkyalphabet so that he could be added to the package of players going to Boston?
