The Chicago Cubs facebook page is a stream of idiocy in reaction to this trade. It's hysterical.

Looks like all those annoying Trixies will have to find another scrappy white guy to love irrationally.

Hello, ladies.

There was irrational Theriot love, and irrational violent frothing hate for him here, the kind of hate reserved for one who murders your family. I never really understood it.

I like Theriot....just not as a starter for the Cubs. He's versatile for a bench player. But I don't think any aspect of his game would be considered "above-average".

I was hoping for a bit more. DeWitt is Fontenot, Wallach is an Archer type, and Smit doesn't do much for me.

Don't think DeWitt has a little more projectability?

I don't see much in his history to suggest it. He only turns 25 in a couple weeks, but at the same time he never was real young for his MiLB levels, and the only time he hit enough to suggest more projection was in Vegas(1.273 OPS home, .697 away). To be a bit more hopeful, he isn't a bad player, and at his age maybe a different organization can help him break out as he enters his prime. I just think that probability is a lot lower than I would've liked for what we gave up. To me, the deal centers on Wallach. If he can breakout in a similar fashion to Archer, and if DeWitt doesn't fall off the face of the earth, then it's a pretty decent deal.

My hope is this move freed up enough money in the Cubs' budget to get a few of the overslot players they drafted or possibly a handful of good international signings. The money saved in this deal shouldn't be overlooked.

The best guy they got (IMO) is Theriot. I like him and think he is really good! I call him The Riot!
I'm more pissed about them trading Theriot than Lilly...
RYAN THERIOT IS NO LONGER A CUB. NOT OKAY

Remarkably few fans understand the concept of trading for prospects when the season is shot.

we keep talking numbers with dewitt and Theriot. There are no stats to show Theriot's scrappiness and his leadership qualities. Big loss, same as Derosa being gone. Just plain dumb.

This could be hours of entertainment. I propose trading a little white guy every season.

It takes a real leader to throw Milton Bradley under the bus!

All these people on Facebook are depressed and crying that Theriot is gone...One guy is comparing him to Lou Brock..LOL

Only if we trade him for a crappy pitcher.

Not an earth shattering trade, but not the worst in the world either.

1. DeWitt is at least as good as Theriot (and possibly more versatile). OPS+ of 99 (league average). We will also have him CHEAP for several seasons. He could also be decent trade bait in the future if we need someone to "throw in" on a deal to bring in someone of greater consequence.

2. Hendy likes doing things "for players." He traded Maddux to give him another chance at a pennant. He traded Lilly on the same rationale. CHC isn't going to make the playoffs this year and we might as well get something for him.

3. The young guys we got could develop into something. We weren't going to get much for Lilly or Theriot. If we got a top 20 prospect for them along with DeWitt and another marginal player I would be OK with that.

4. I think this trade marks the end of the "Mike Fontenot: Chicago Cub" era. DeWitt is a younger, more consistent and cheaper.

I'm pretty happy with the return. Wallach could turn into Archer Part 2 which would be great and Dewitt is a decent player who can hold down 2b until Hak-Ju Lee or whoever may be ready.

At this point, thanks to the Astros and the DBacks driving down the price of their stars, getting this much back for Lilly is great. I don't trust Hendry not to do something stupid, such as either not offering arbitration or just re-signing Lilly.

I hope the Cubs dangle Fontenot, but luckily even though the trade deadline is in 25 minutes from when I'm typing this, Fontenot can probably get through waivers or at least be a waiver claim deal easily enough. I don't know what the Cubs could get back for him, but he is superfluous at this point.

There was nowhere near that level of hate. You're just misconstruing the times when people would point out he's not very good.

Didn't know about the home/road splits. His overall numbers in that age 22 season look nifty.

Seriouslyyyy! First DeRosa & now Theriot! :/ I am now forced to be a Colvin fan...he's the next best looking player... Hahaha :/

When will the #Cubs wise up and dump Hendry???? Theriot and Lilly for Dewitt and these prospects? Are you kidding me?

I think I'm going to cry.

The guys the Astros and DBacks traded were owed tens of millions and signed beyond this year. Much different circumstances than Lilly's.
