So is Dewitt our fulltime 2B now or is he gonna share time with Fontenot?

I like this trade, if only for the fact to see someone else at 2B for awhile. I always get excited when we get new players so I'll probably be watching a few games just to see our new 2B.

I guess a Baker/DeWitt platoon is possible, but not Fonts/DeWitt since they're both LH. My guess is DeWitt is the regular starter.

I really liked Wallach on draft day last year. I bet Wilken loves him given Wallach's profile; Wilken gave rave reviews for Jose Ceda, Marcos Mateo and Chris Archer which was one of the reasons Hendry traded for those 3.

I would have preferred another minor leaguer over DeWitt but with Hendry's eye on 2011, that's not the worst player you can get who can contribute right away.

Oh, and I know 2 Dodger fan girls who are whining that DeWitt was traded (though their favorites Ethier and Kemp are still on the team  ).

Also, disappointed no one else was dealt. I thought for sure at least Nady and one of Fontenot/Baker would be gone.

I could definitely see a waiver deal for Nady or Baker. I wonder, though, what the plans are for DeWitt.

If they see him as the second baseman of the future, they'll likely look to deal Fontenot. However, if they see DeWitt as more of a utility type 2B/3B backup, they may choose to keep Fontenot.

My honest guess is that if we had wanted Lambo or McDonald, we could have had them, as I'd think Lilly was more important of an add than Dotel was......That said, I think if given the option of either package, I'd have taken the one the Pirates got honestly. But, I'll defer to Wilken and Hendry, since we don't know all of the info on these guys that they have available.....

Agreed. Was just hoping it would happen today. I definitely think we'll see at least one of our other guys moved before the waiver deadline.

Barring injuries, Baker is probably a longshot to be dealt with as many middle infielders as were traded this deadline. However, I'll be surprised if Nady isn't dealt. Somebody will decide they need a bat off the bench and target him, I'd think.

Agreed. Cubs had their eyes on other dudes.

Bruce Miles on the possibility of other trades made in August by the Cubs:

On more trades

Setting up shop here at Coors: I suspect a guy like Nady will go after the deadline. If they put him on waivers and he's claimed, they'll just let him go. Silva appears to be staying. Fukudome looks to be a wintertime bad-contract-for-bad-contract deal.

Here are some more fantastic Facebook comments

Son of aaa bitch.... theriot was one hell of a player... i loved watchin him play ... fanastic.... always got on base no matter what... Love the Cubs, but damn what a dumb move
. :( Theriot was our future.

Theroit?????? I have been a cubs fan for my entire life and I have seen some stupid things this club has done in the past. This makes absolutely no sense what so ever.]

This one I agree with

Koyie Hill should have went with him

Ive been on the phone with my buddy who played baseball with Dewitt, trying to talk him into getting us some free tickets.

Lol, there's some bad ones I've seen, too. It makes me laugh.

It's actually quite scary, in a way. To see fans react like that. Because you have to wonder sometimes, if moves are or are not made to help placate the majority. I know it sounds like it'd be a stupid thing to do, if you're running a company, but yesterday on MLBN, they actually mentioned that Toronto wouldn't trade John McDonald one year because of the public outcry they thought they would face from it.......

And what's worse than anything, I could see the Cubs thinking cubs.com is a place to use to follow public opinion.......

Posted
Yeah I'm kind of intrigued to see the public reaction when I get back to the park on Monday afternoon. Theriot had way too big of an "average-fan" following for as god-awfully mediocre as he was, but I still doubt the outcry will last very long. That is, so long as DeWitt doesn't get off to a really bad start.

Based on the Dodger female fans' reaction to DeWitt being traded, I think the Cub female fan base won't be disappointed too long.

Hopefully Fontenot can get moved pretty quickly because he's really redundant right now.

I sure hope so. Id have no problem seeing what he can do at 2B, but from what Ive heard, his natural posotion is 3B, and I highly doubt he'll ever be able to put up the kind of numbers expected from a 3B. If they plan on him being the 2B of the future, or at least near future, thats one thing, but if they plan for him to play 3rd once Aramis is gone, that could be bad.

Dewitt is nothing special so far in his MLB career, but Theriot was a god-awful hitter. He actually has a negative WAR this season. It is pretty difficult to do that playing the middle infield.

If you're talking about DeWitt, he's been playing 2B all season.

No I believe he was talking about Fontenot.

As for me I want them to stick Dewitt at 2B and see what he can do the rest of the season. 2B has been a rotating door for us the last couple of seasons since Derosa was traded and I'm looking foward to some stability and someone we can call our starting second baseman.

The Chicago Cubs facebook page is a stream of idiocy in reaction to this trade. It's hysterical.
This is almost as bad as the Del Rosa deal.

This one is top-5. Criticizing the deal of someone you apparently liked but had no idea what the person's name actually was.
