Given the returns for guys like Haren and Oswalt, I'm pretty happy with this return. Not a huge DeWitt fan, but he could be interesting as he enters his prime. And the young arms are interesting.

All in all, we got a bit more than the expected value from keeping Lilly and hoping he stays healthy and effective enough to produce a couple draft picks.

I'll give the trade a B. It gets better if we flip DeWitt or Fontenot.

After reading the reports on Wallach, I'm a little more pleased. It's not a bad pickup in general.

We still should've gotten more for Lilly though, especially with us picking up half of what's owed to him. He's an above average pitcher who will probably net the Dodgers a couple of draft picks. We should've gotten and above average return. I guess I'm not so much disappointed with the players we got back as much as I am with the overall quality of the return for Lilly.

Blake DeWitt seems kinda like a Theriot clone to me.

He has much better power potential than Theriot. Between the minors and majors, Dewitt has hit a home run every 34.6 AB's. Theriot has hit a home run in the minors/majors every 206 AB's.

Glad to know. I'm reading a lot that says we should be pretty happy with getting DeWitt, his numbers just don't seem to impressive with a cursory glance.

The Dodgers are now the grittiest team in baseball.

Ryan Theriot

Scott Podsednik

Jamey Carroll

Casey Blake

They lead the league in WHUFFs (white hustling utility fan favorites)!

I like Lilly a ton, as probably just about everyone does here. But, if you look at this from a Dodger fan's perspective, they really can't be all that happy. Lilly doesn't separate himself from anyone that's currently in their rotation, even Padilla. Theriot sucks. What does this move actually do to help them, since there's no chance in hell they actually offer Lilly arb? They are 4.5 back of the wildcard right now with quite a few teams ahead of them to pass. Honestly, I'd probably be underwhelmed if I were a Dodger fan, watching Oswalt, Haren, and Lee all get dealt, wind up with Lilly(the best of the 2nd tier SP's available) and downgrade from Dewitt to Theriot.......

Dodger fans hate this deal.

I'm feeling better about it already!

This is my favorite line from that link.

"in 3 years blake dewitt will be hitting 300 for the cubs

lilly will be pitching for the yankees, theriot hitting on high school girls at a mall in encino trying to lure them into his camaro, and the starting 2b for the don mattingly-managed la dodgers – juan uribe"

With Lilly making 12 million this year, it's very unlikely the Dodgers offer Lilly arbitration. He's going to be a free agent, so if everyone really loves him (including the Cubs), they can just sign him back.

It's all about age, too, Dewitt is 24 and had a decent season at age 22 a couple of years ago while Theriot put up a .700 ops in Daytona at 24.

Theriot had more value back in December when I wanted to trade him. :(

Then again, so did Z.

Yeah, I like how you still have the stories up on the front page. You are looking pretty good right about now.

The other part of this trade that can't be overlooked is it now gives a young pitcher (likely Thomas Diamond) a chance to come up and start over the next two months. It will be fun to see what one of them can do.

I see little to no chance that they let Cashner go back to starting and that boggles my mind.

It was their idea to let him start after drafting him so I doubt they gave up on the idea that quickly. I think they will let him start again in winter ball and going into spring training but it is too late now to try to put him back in the rotation.

Curious to see if anything else happens today (Nady, Fontenot, Fukudome etc). Seems like most of trade candidates the Cubs have left could easily slip waivers and go into August though.

Meh, Dewitt is a decent MLB 2B who's under team control for awhile and has some upside. Smit is underwhelming and Wallach is a relative unknown since he's playing at a pretty low level. I think they could have gotten a better return but not much better.

I didn't realize that DeWitt isn't arb eligible next year. Getting him is more valuable than I originally thought, especially since Theriot would have been non tendered.......

Prado is out 4-6 weeks with a broken knuckle. Anyone think the Braves would be interested in Fontenot?

Interesting. I think he would be a really good fit for ATL.

The Chicago Cubs facebook page is a stream of idiocy in reaction to this trade. It's hysterical.

Looks like all those annoying Trixies will have to find another scrappy white guy to love irrationally.
