So long, Ted, and thank you for 4 solid years of production. I wish you luck the rest of your career. You were one of my favorite Cubs your entire time here.

I always found it funny that we came *this* close to acquiring Soriano and Lilly from the Yanks in exchange for Sammy back in 2000 and then 7 years later we had them both anyway.

Gammons just said on MLB Network that Lilly will be a Dodger within 30 minutes.

He'd obviously upgrade over Theriot. Looking over his numbers he didnhave some good years before his final stinker of a year in Atlanta. Guess it all depends if Theriot is invoked in the Lilly deal or not.

When did Kelly Johnson become so desirable?

He's a better option at 2B than Fontenot, Theriot, or Baker. I'd happily take him in exchange for Theriot/Russell.

I don't know that I'd want him over DeWitt, though.

Is Dewitt a lot better defensively or something?

The main upside I can see is more years of team control but nothing really sticks out to me to indicate Dewitt is the better player, although he is quite a bit younger.

From the Cubs perspective he may be more attactive as an acquisition because he is a lot cheaper. Not sure what their plans are for 2B in the offseason but they could bring Dewitt back as a utility guy and not be out too much in salary. With what Johnson makes he pretty much has to be a starter to justify what he will get paid.

Not sure. There's only about 100 games to use with UZR, but it says he's about a -7 defender while Johnson is a -3 defender. That would sway me a bit toward Johnson, if accurate.

That said, my main reasoning in favoring DeWitt slightly is that he's three years younger and will be cheap for significantly longer. Johnson will cost $5+ million next year through arbitration and then will be a free agent. Johnson has been much better in the majors so far (.793 OPS vs .719) however.

Biggest advantage to DeWitt is that he's young and can improve and will be cheap for a while, whereas Johnson will likely be overpaid by 2012. Johnson's been better, however, and likely will be the better offensive player.

Anything about Theriot?

Nope. Just said his sources say Lilly will be a Dodger in 30 minutes.

A Stark tweet, though:

#Cubs on verge of trading Ted Lilly to #Dodgers. All indications are that Ryan Theriot also going to LA in deal. #trades [via Twitter]

According to Rosenthal:

#Cubs would get DeWitt, Class AA pitcher and possibly third player for Lilly/Theriot package. Not sure of financial exchange. #Dodgers #MLB

DeWitt, AA pitcher and possible 3rd player per Rosenthal.

I sure hope those prospects are worth it because on the surface that sounds pretty underwhelming.

I was all pumped to trade Lilly, but now that it seems like it's actually happening I don't want him to go. He's been so good for us and just an all around badass. He's in the DeRosa category of guys that I just really liked having on the team.

I'd have some interest in Cole St. Clair as the AA pitcher, but I'd be disappointed if he and DeWitt was the return.
