Lou is probably about average tactically compared to other mlb managers... but I'd venture to say that he's not nearly as good as those of us on the board that have taken the time to familiarize ourselves with the math behind the decisions.

Please tell me you are joking.

Why?

The whole "they played so they know better" line is a bunch of bull-puckey. I have no doubt that Lou is probably better at managing a 25 man clubhouse, practices, and all the other crap that a manager has to do than any of us in here probably could. But when it comes to in-game moves, I can think of 5-10 guys here off the top of my head I'd rather have making moves than lou.

Actually your first line is pure bull-puckey, because I never said or insinuated any such thing. Pure fabrication on your part.

To assume that anyone on here knows any more about statistics than Lou, or anyone on the Cubs coaching staffs is just plain laughable. And to say that Lou is PROBABLY better at managing a 25 man clubhouse than anyone on here is even more laughable. In fact, if i were you, I would be embarrassed.

This is really too far out there to even argue any further. Believe what you want. I can always use the laugh.

Lou is going a little senile. And even if it were totally not possible that a student of the game and purveyor of new-age statistical evaluation could ever make a better in-game call from his armchair, the fact is, Lou's losin it a bit. He's a little behind the times and just not always 100% there despite his great success with our club. Those who can't recognize this or concede that he makes some uninformed, by-the-seat-of-his-pants decisions that cost the team from time to time just aren't watching closely enough or aren't informed themselves.

I'm not sure if you think you're surrounded by total idiots, or if you have a complete misunderstanding of what MLB coaches and managers are educated in.

You're taking him out of context. Rob only compared him to other MLB managers. If you looked at the other 30 managers in baseball, I don't think Lou would be too far from the middle of the pack. For example, Dusty's still employed, so you know he's not the worst.

theres nothing wrong with a thread discussing his terrible decisions. i curse him in my head every time he does something dumb.

that said, hes the best manager we've had in probably 40 years, certainly in my lifetime.

I don't really agree with that statement, but Alan Trammel is one smart dude.

Once again a lame argument. I never said Lou was perfect. I realize that in hindsight it is easy for many to second guess him.It takes no brains to figure this out. The painfully obvious point you seem to be oblivious of is that even with your hindsight and second guessing, you are only assuming that the decisions some of you would make would have worked out better, as of course they never happened beyond your fantasies.

You really think that EVERYONE in baseball is so stupid that they keep paying millions to educated baseball people to be managers, when all they really need is some bozo from a message board ? Have you really ever put any real thought into this bizarre theory? Obviously not.

The fact that Trammel is almost certainly going to be our next manager delights me to no end. I mean, I sure hope he will be. I love Lou, but I think Trammel is one of the smarter minds in the game.

I don't think we ever heard anything like this out of Dusty...

But after 104 pitches, Piniella wasn't going to leave Lilly in any longer, despite how well he was pitching.

"Early in the season you let a pitcher go much more than he pitched, you're looking for problems," Piniella said.

I feel sorry for Cueto, Volquez and crew.

yeah lou makes some pretty bad in-game decisions but he is responsible with pitcher use and understands the value of patience, both of which are way more important than in-game managing.

Nobody here has said that. Lou does a lot of things for this team that none of us here could even come close to him at.

But I absolutely understand the numbers behind the game better than he does. I'll guaran-damn-tee it. His lineups are suboptimal. His bullpen leverage last year was off base. He still insists on using the hit and run. He occasionally lays down sac bunts at silly times. He lets Aaron Miles into the game...

I've never said I could do his job. But if I had his ear, he'd be able to do his job a lot better.

Because strategic decisions are a very tiny part of a manager's value, so they aren't selected for that.

Asking why so many managers are bad at strategy is like asking why pitchers are bad at hitting.

Those stupid, stupid Cubs. I am firing off a letter today informing them that if they would simply hire Rob from NSBB, that Lou would suddenly become a much better manager.

hopefully, after he gets the team swept by the cards with his extreme dustyness. They will fire effing Piniella and will hire Sandberg.

This is an ironic post, right?

Ohhh...yeah...the classic "just a message board poster" attack. I think it's been around since the dawn of the internet. It's great when you have no other way to argue a losing point. Drop the argument and attack the "message board poster" aspect. Well done.

Ask around before you continue with your absurd tirade. I'm not the same sort of message board poster that you are... I actually know of what I speak.

David Patton in the 7th inning of a tied game with the middle of the Cards lineup coming up, while Marmol hasnt pitched. Enough said. Lou really has no idea how to use a bullpen

I had a nice retort all typed up for you, flyseye, but it didn't send and now it's already been said. Basically, there's no doubt in my mind that MANY nsbb posters could out-strategize Lou and others and that NONE could do the rest of their jobs effectively. BECAUSE HE'S A MANAGER AND YOU'RE A PUNK ON THE INTERNET is a really terrible argument here. Again, you're embarassing yourself.
