Lous a freaking idiot Part 2 2009 season

Well it took 4 games, but figured we needed another one of these for our terribly incompetant game manager Lou Piniella. Seriously Lou, runners on 1st and 3rd, 1 out, and you pinch hit AARON FREAKING MILES, instead of Hoff? Why? It makes no sense.... Edited by Keener98

Once Harden left the game it was just an endless concatenation of dumb decisions.

Leave Heilman in, it's just Craig Counsell and there are good RH hitters coming up.

Use Hoffpauir to drive in the run, or at least Gathright so he can beat out a DP. If you're that worried about Macha countering with a LHP then just burn Gathright and use Johnson, Gathright's only purpose right now is unnecessary defensive replacement(see below).

Leave Marshall in, he's a starter, he's good enough to face Hardy, Cameron, and Hall.

And if you do take out Marshall, just let Vizcaino finish the inning when there's little danger, especially when there's not much left in the pen and Gregg doesn't throw enough strikes to be trusted with inherited runners.

And stop taking Fukudome out of game for defensive purposes.

I'm not sure which defensive purpose pulling Fuku serves, save making the defense demonstrably worse.

Gregg has issues, but if not for Soriano in left, I don't think the game even gets tied.

Miles was the right choice. he should have bunted with Soriano on deck.

That's absurd.

Hoff had a good chance to drive the run in with a sac fly or a hit, and probably less of a chance to gidp than Miles.

Gathright was extremely unlikely to ground into the dp.

judging by career stats, gathright has GIDP'ed in 1.3% of his ABs, hoffpauir in 1.8% of his minor league ABs and miles in 2.2% of his ABs.

so even if lou was trying to avoid the DP, he did the wrong thing.

Counsell is a weak hitter. I'd rather face a guy w/ no power with a power pitcher in that situation. Bringing in Cotts also should have meant Macha countering with a RH hitter. With 3 RHs afterward, Cotts was a waste anyway.

I can only assume he went with Miles because the contact play was on and he didn't trust Micah's ability to make contact. But the fact that Hoffpauir is 300X the hitter that Miles is and immensely more likely to hit a flyball to score the runner from 3rd never crossed his mind.

I have no idea why he took Vizcaino out. He was throwing like crap, but somehow managed to get 2 outs with little trouble. What good did going from a RH to another RH do?

And stop taking Fukudome out of game for defensive purposes.

Makes no sense. All Gathright has on Fukudome is range. Fukudome makes up for it with the great jumps he gets and his amazing throwing arm. What makes it worse is that Gathright isn't even his best CF on the bench.

Ive got to believe miles was supposed to bunt and missed a sign. There is no other reason he could have been in there except to have squeeze bunted with Fontenot on third. If not than Lou is a complete moron because the Cotts move is inexcusable.

I find that hard to believe since Fontenot didnt break towards home at all, and I find it hard to believe 2 players missed a sign on the same play.

I just can't believe Lou screwed up (almost?) every single move after putting Heilman in the game.

It was like once he had to start bringing in relievers, his brain stopped functioning at all.

You guys ready to admit that Aaron Miles is history's greatest monster yet, or we still going to cling to his numbers vs. lefties last year?

And pulling Vizcaino was the right call at the time because Vizcaino is [expletive] horrible. The issue was walking single A caliber Chris Duffy when a meatball down the pipe would've resulted in a 300 foot flyout.

i'm not sure that that's the case, but chances are he doesn't get a hit since gregg has good velocity and duffy stinks. bottom line, you don't throw a 3-2 curve with the bases empty and a 1 run lead when the guy batting is a lousy hitter but has great speed.

Lou made bad decisions yesterday but I'm not eager for another year of "HE'S A FREAKING IDIOT." He's not an idiot. He's a pretty good manager who sometimes makes bad decisions. He's a mediocre in-game manager, but a very good talent evaluator. There isn't a single manager in baseball who is perfect, so I'm not sure why everyone expects Lou to be flawless, day in and day out.

[some NSBB reader]We don't expect Lou to be perfect, we just expect him to not do idiotic things like bat Aaron Miles ever!!!!!!!!![/some NSBB reader]

Taking care of that for everyone.
