I guess we can, but as Xzero pointed out, Fielder is like his Dad, or a Dave Kingman like hitter. He's all or nothing. If you are going player for player, Lee is a far better player then Fielder.

](*,)

dave kingman: 608 BB, 1816 K in 7429 PAs. (8.1% walk rate, 24.4% strikeout rate). career OBP: .302

prince fielder: 190 BB, 327 K in 1759 PAs (10.8% walk rate, 18.5% strikeout rate). career OBP: .366

Yeah, that's not what I was trying to say (Cecil had a decent career OBP). What I was driving at was having a great season relatively early in his career, then having a series of seasons that are never quite as good.

If we end up with Wolf or Maddux I would be pissed. Both of those guys are not upgrades, you can probably make a case proving they are downgrades actually.

I wouldnt be shocked in the slightest if the Brewers still end up going for Maddux. His brother is the pitching coach, and they certainly wouldnt have to give up any Gamels or Escobars.

Maddux in front of that defense would be hilarious.

Augh! Meaning that he will likely end up being that type of player. Prince will be a DH in 5 years and will do nothing but swing for the fences as his career moves on.

I give them credit for trying to go for it all, but with Sheets and Sabathia soon to be free agents and Sabathia likely going to the highest bidder, they are gambling and I like teams that gamble. Luckily (minus Kendall and Cameron) that offense is young but it will be interesting as Fielder, Hart, Hardy, etc. all get further along in their arby years. Luckily journeyman pitcher Suppan has 2 years left which should help free some money.

They do need another arm in that pen.

that's nice. if you swing for the fences but are good at hitting home runs and drawing walks, you are a good baseball player.

I think with this move we are seeing them take a very legitimate run at success this year while reloading for 2013-5. They have basically used LaPorta in return for two high draft picks next year that MAY be ready for the majors in 2012. They have already basically said that they won't sign Sheets in the offseason. So they will end up with 4 compensatory picks to go with their own in next year's draft. Couple that with them almost assuredly being sellers next July (Fielder to NYY?) and they should be set up very nicely to make another run in 5 or 6 years if they draft/trade wisely. Conversely, in the interim the Cubs should own the division with almost everyone at or slightly past their prime. I would expect them to reload and be sort of like St Louis is right now as Milwaukee rises back up. On multiple levels this trade makes a lot of sense for the Brewers. The only drawback is whether they are willing to deplete their system to fix the bullpen in the coming weeks.

ERA:

Cubs 3.61 (10th)

Brewers 4.64 (28th)

Which is why they'll be watching the post season again this year like every one of the last 26 years. That pen gives new meaning to the name: "Gas can".

Their run differential looks a whole lot likes last years team. They still look like a very streaky team.

I think you are getting a bit ahead of yourself. Gallardo slots into Sheets spot next year and the rest of the Brewer team is still around next year except maybe Cameron and some bench guys. There is no reason that they should tank next year or be selling Fielder at the deadline. Gallardo, Parra are both high potential pitchers and they'll still need a true #3 or better pitcher to slot in the middle but the team is hardly going to be terrible next year because of Sheets leaving.

They also had a heavy draft this year and have a pretty stocked minor league system even without LaPorta so I think the team is built to be competitive until at least 2015. Maybe not dominant but at least in the playoff picture.

Sure does. I want Hendry to make a move not so much to "trump" the Brewers, but to add depth for the playoffs. When I first heard the news on Sebathia I was like: "Crap, Hendry needs to match it".

After looking at what the Brewers have, I am not too concerned about them. We need a starter for a WS run, not to match Milwaukee.

They'll be good b/c of the core of the offense, but to assume that Gallardo and Parra will equate or come close to Sheets and 14 starts of Sabathia in a playoff push isn't fair as well as needing to overall the pen (again).

I wonder if Jim will drop the "getting Rich Hill back is liking acquiring a starter" bomb on us.

Much like a lot of us here, I don't think the Cubs are anticipating that Hill will contribute this year. Hoping, yes, but expecting, no.

Look out, Milwaukee. The Mets won tonight and are getting closer.

So wait, you are scoreboard watching? In early July??? For the wild card race?!?!

i think the compensation system is kinda dumb. i wish they'd either take one of the two picks away, or put in a clause that teams cannot be compensated for a player acquired within the past year. it was designed to protect small market teams, but it's not really working out in that manner.

Nope. It was announced on the ESPN Yankees/Red Sox game.

I have an idea since the Indians are clearly in Nuke It All mode. How about we make an offer for Cliff Lee? Yeah, we'd be buying as high as possible but he's been a ground ball pitcher this year. He's due to regress a bit but he will probably end up in Ted Lilly range. I'd go to war in October with Zambrano/Cliff Lee/Lilly/Dempster.

The Indians still have too much talent to "nuke it all". Cliff Lee is signed through 2009 with an option for 2010. If the Indians are in the same position this time next year, then maybe Cliff Lee will be moved, but not this year. CC was on his last year, and it was clear that they wouldnt be able to re sign him.

Touche. I'd also be interested in Greinke if he's still on his meds. He probably wouldn't come cheaper than Burnett because of his low salary.

Id love Greinke, but the Royals seem to have this idea in their heads that they're going to contend next year. Kind of cute. last year there was some banter about us being interested in Greinke, but I dont think there was ever any serious talk.

Yea, after Billy Wagner choked away another save chance.

I saw that. It was very Brewer-esque.
