I apologize if this was said earlier in the thread - I just didn't have time to sort through it all.

This trade brings to mind another trade Cleveland made 24 years ago that I still believe should have resulted in a Cubs WS Championship.

I'm hoping Sabathia doesn't have the same success that Sutcliffe had in coming over to the NL for the second half of 1984.

There's no way in hell the Cubs would have been able to beat the Tigers that year. That Tigers team was going to pound whoever faced them in the World Series.

If Manny Parra is a top 2 starter then we're in great shape, because he's Sean Marshall without the MLB success.

Personally, I'm surprised to see Ender here being a giant homer.

The Cubs offense is better the Brewers WITHOUT Soriano.

O RLY?

on the cubs' side:

soto is way better than kendall

derosa at this point is a little better than weeks

ramirez is easily better than hall

on the brewers' side:

hardy is better than theriot

fielder is marginally better than lee

cameron is better than edmonds/johnson

braun is way better than whoever's playing left in soriano's absence

hart is probably slightly better than fukudome, but it's close

As far as (b) goes, that spot will be occupied by the Phillies or Mets.

the same mets that trail the brewers by either 5 or 6 games, pending the outcome of their game today? BP has the NL east at roughly a 10% chance of winning the wild card, so your confidence in this respect is unwarranted.

I don't necessarily disagree with anything, but Mike Cameron over Edmonds/Johnson. I'm not so sure right now.

Cameron (52 games)

.232/.311/.500, 14 hrs with 33 rbis

Edmonds (w/Cubs): (38 games)

.276/.375/.552 8 hrs 24 rbis

Johnson:

.266/.336/.383 3 homers, 31 rbis

To this point, Edmonds with the Cubs (138 OPS+ in 116 AB's) has been superior to Cameron with the Brewers (110 OPS+ in 194 AB's). Color me skeptical on Edmonds, but he's been quite excellent for the Cubs.

Johnson is great against LHP, but sucks against RHP, and Edmonds is the opposite. When Soriano returns, Edmonds and Johnson will be platooned that way.

Um, thanks?

Ehhhhhhhhhhhhh, let him have his moment. I was feeling much the same way when the Cubs got Nomar in 2004.

Are you kidding me? You should be embarrassed about typing this.

yeah i didn't realize weeks had fallen apart so badly. last year weeks was easily the better offensive player.

I wonder if Jim will drop the "getting Rich Hill back is liking acquiring a starter" bomb on us.

nah, he'll just overpay for Randy Wolf

Matt Murton would be overpaying for Wolf. Seriously, if it comes down to Randy Wolf or standing pat, just pick between Marquis, Marshall, Gallagher, and Hill for the 4-5 starters.

This is a good gamble for the Brrewers, but as the cliche goes, if the Cubs handle their business (especially against the Brewers),they won't have to worry about the Brewers or Sabathia.

I am fully confident Hendry will net us a starter that will improve the rotation. Now if Hendry goes out and acquire another Steve Trachsel type starter, I might have to do my best Travis Bickle impersonation on my Cubs gear.

Gammons said this would be officially announced tomorrow morning.

Sabathia for LaPorta, 2 minor leaguers, and a PTBNL

And Joe Morgan continues to prove his ignorance as Gammons gave that report.

This pickup by the Brewers shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. I disagree with those saying the Cubs need to react to this move; by all reports, Hendry has been inquiring about the availability of pitchers and I'm sure he will do his best to acquire someone but the Cubs did not have enough to counter with LaPorta. Anyway, as someone else said, I see CC as a replacement for what Gallardo provided the Brewers earlier. I still don't think this makes them a better team than the Cubs but they are primed to win the Wild Card if he pitches as expected. Of course, they still have concerns with the rest of their rotation (not including Sheets) and bullpen. We'll see what happens...

a brewers fan friend sent me this: Wisconsin State Journal is reporting it's LHP Zach Jackson and RHP Rob Bryson in the deal with LaPorta.

All I know so far is that top prospect Matt LaPorta is in the deal. I was told two lower-level minor leaguers also are included. The Brewers refused to include another top prospect such as Alcides Escobar or Mat Gamel.

Wow screw you Cleveland

A source familiar with the Brewers' trade for Cleveland lefty C.C. Sabathia just told me that the other players going to the Indians with Matt LaPorta are minor-league pitchers Zach Jackson and Rob Bryson and a fourth player, perhaps minor-league third baseman Taylor Green.

The fourth player currently is listed as "to be named later" but it is believed the Indians want to look more at Green, with the idea of moving him to second base.

Jackson, who was up briefly with the Brewers this season, is 1-5 with a 7.85 ERA at Class AAA Nashville in 22 appearances (six starts).

Bryson is pitching at Class A West Virginia, where he is 3-2 with a 4.25 ERA in 22 outings (five starts).

If Green indeed is the fourth player, he is batting .298 with 10 homers and 54 RBI at Class A Brevard County.

We could have topped these scrubs. WOW.

I'd like to ask you what tradeable player in our system offers what LaPorta can, since a middle of the order power bat is what Cleveland was obviously looking for.

Geovany Soto.

But seriously...the deal was basically LaPorta for CC.

I've never been a big fan of Zach Jackson. Bryson has put up decent numbers as a reliever in the Sally League, but I've never had a high opinion of minor league relievers, especially those still in A ball.
