Bruce weighs in on the trade and its implications for the Cubs.

Link.

As reported in Sunday's Daily Herald, the Cubs are looking hard at pitchers, with Oakland's Rich Harden being a prime player of interest. However, Athletics GM Billy Beane has not decided whether he'll be a buyer or a seller and may not do so until close to the July 31 non-waiver trading deadline.

The Toronto Blue Jays may make A.J. Burnett available, but he does not appear to be a "must-have" for the Cubs. San Diego has a pair of interesting pitchers in lefty Randy Wolf and former Cub Greg Maddux.

"If we can add a significant piece, we'll try to, whether it becomes a pitcher or a position player," Hendry said. "Who knows if we add one, two or three people before then? I don't know. Making deals of importance is not based on just what you want to do."

I dont understand this whole Wolf/Maddux rumor. Why on earth would Hendry go get more 4's and 5's. Unless, hes planning on a 3 team trade where we trade our current 4's and 5's.... :-k

Especially when the 4s and 5s we'd be getting are worse than the 4s and 5s we have now.

What is intersting about Randy Wolf? The guy is a nearly worthless piece of crap. That would make about as much sense as trading for Traschel did last year. *sigh* Randy Wolf yuck, Sean Marshall is about 3 times better than Wolf. Hes worse than a left handed version of Marquis and he plays in one of the better pitchers parks in the NL. I dont understand Hendry's infatuation with him. We have no need for Wolf. The thought of it makes me sick to my stomach.

derosa at this point is a little better than weeks

Sig.

i'll play your game, you rogue!

Wow, I'm feeling pretty burnt here. My error of predicting the future was way worse than your error of accurately assessing the downright obvious.

Must have taken you a while to find that one. Maybe if you spent less time on this sort of stuff you'd be able to get laid.

I think the willingness to accept Juan Pierre knowing what he brings to the table is worse than mistakenly thinking Weeks wasn't having such a dreadful year.

ps- I don't understand weeks all that much, but I am pretty sure he is better than what he is producing this year. If I were a gm I would definitely target him as a buy super low type of player.

weeks' EqA was 16 points higher than derosa's last year. of course derosa looks like the far better offensive player when he's having a career year and weeks is having his worst year in the majors.

Randy Wolf:

Home ERA: 2.70

Away ERA: 6.66

Greg Maddux

Home ERA: 2.45

Away ERA: 5.71

You expect Hendry to understand park factors? Or at least to weigh them more heavily than called me to explain why he didn't sign with me/former cy young 10 years ago factors?

At this point, Weeks is a total enigma. He's just as likely to be abysmal or great from day to day.

One day he looks great, and the next he looks like he has no business being on a ML roster. The only thing that you can say with any certainty is that he can take a walk. This has been going on for longer than just this year.

And he is consistently inconsistent - there is no one month or half in which he has been better than others.

At this point, you have to consider DeRosa the better player, if only because of his relative consistency. DeRo's aggregate numbers from 2006 on are better than Weeks'. If not for Rickie's power surge at the end of last year, it's not even a contest.

Not Hendry but, surely there must be a Cub scout or two informing Hendry to stay away from Wolf and Maddux. Trading for them is a lateral move, if Hendry' intent on improving the Cubs you don't make such a move.

Weeks has had some injuries to fight through though -- DeRo not so much.

AFAIK, Weeks has been healthy all year, and he's been abysmal. He sucks in the field too.

Look at the injury reports. He was on the 15 day DL last month. Came off Jun 22nd.

The fact that people are comparing trading for Wolf with the trade for Trachsel last year makes me about 99% sure we're actually going to do it

God, Hendry can get that 'blind squirrel' luck sometimes, but the way he thinks about baseball is completely wrong, and I see him responding to the CC Sabathia move with something disastrous. At least we can't miss Gallagher much because he would have been stewing in the Bullpen anyway

Sorry for the depressive stuff guys

You're always so positive about the Bears. Then when it comes to the Cubs you turn into Mr. Negative Neggie.

God I'm so glad I posted this

Is like some sort of cosmic justice that Hendry made a great trade.
