It's too bad the Cubs didn't draft Wieters last year. You could probably get Sabathia for Wieters, Gallagher and one more. Oh well, maybe Vitters will develop.

Would you even want to give up that much for Sabathia?

I would be against that trade and probably look at the next tier if that's what required the Cubs to get Sabathia.

Report: Dodgers trying for Sabathia, Wilson

The Dodgers are currently making runs at both C.C. Sabathia and the Pirates' Jack Wilson, according to FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal.

Complicating their efforts for Sabathia is that one or two players the Indians want are also being discussed in the Wilson deal. Rosenthal hints that 3B Andy LaRoche, RHP James McDonald and SS Chin-Lung Hu are "likely drawing consideration" from Cleveland, though he offers nothing to back that up. Jul. 4 - 7:00 pm et

Lets hope the Dodgers can step up their offer here. While Id rather CC stay in the AL, Id much rather him go to the Dodgers. Also, the Dodgers might be inclined to outbid the Brewers if it comes down to it, as they are more likely to be able to offer him an extension. If they're truely serious, they migh need to add Kemp, Ethier, or Loney to the deal. What if we were to try to get in the action with a 3 team deal and get Brad Penny or Derrek Lowe from the Dodgers, just for the sake of blocking the Brewers?

Long term we might be better off if the Brewers get Sabathia.

I would think Cleveland would be more interested in some combination of young hitters AND pitchers for Sabathia.

Some combination of Hoffpauir, McGahee, Pie etc etc and Gallagher, Hill, Marshall etc etc would seem like a better deal than just 2 hitting prospects.

Guys like Hoffpauir and McGahee are nothing more than throw-ins. Pie still has value but it's dropped this year. However, I think a package of something like Vitters, Pie, and Gallagher is quite a package.

I know Hoffpauir is 28, but he may have more value than people think. Hes OPSin over 1.000 in AAA, and had some success in his short stint on the big league club. Granted, he wont net us a big name by himself, but I'd be surprised if some scouts arent watching him very closely in the corn fields.

I really don't think so.

why?

short term it makes me nervous...

i think the brewers are a little bit crazy to do this...and if they do they have to go after another bullpen arm...

if they get C.C., they won't be resigning him and they won't resign sheets...so they are obviously in win this year mode

Indians signed RHP Jeff Weaver to a minor league deal and sent him to Triple-A Buffalo.

Weaver had spent some time in the Brewers' farm system this season before asking for his release on June 12. He was 2-4 with a 6.22 ERA in nine starts for Triple-A Nashville. It'd be shocking to see Weaver called up to the Indians this year, but Paul Byrd is struggling and C.C. Sabathia is probably on the move, so who knows?

per rotoworld...

very very interesting...

This makes it our job to not only end the drought, but also make the Brewers mortgage their future for nothing and make Doug Melvin look like a moron. Still, I think the Dodgers can swing a deal and take CC.

Sorry if this was mentioned but Olney mentioned that one of his sources said Sabathia could have made his last start as an Indian. The signing of Weaver is curious. I pray the Brewers don't get him.

I agree. Possibly getting Sabathia doesn't guarantee a playoff appearance. I mean, the Brewers could trade 2-3 good to great prospects to get a half season of Sabathia, not make the playoffs, and lose him in FA with Sheets. I know some will say, they could get 5 out of the top 40 picks, but losing both pitchers, would set the Brewers back a couple of yrs, if they don't find suitable replacements.

So, it's a HUGE gamble for the Brewers.

A gamble I don't get. They only have to gain one game on the Cardinals and they make the playoffs anyways. They better hope that he is hot for them for the two months they have him.

That'd be pretty awesome if they don't get CC and wind up giving up LaPorta or Gamel for a Bedard or Wolf.

It really wouldnt though. They probably wouldnt give up LaPorta or Gamel for Bedard, however, he is arbitration eligible for 2009, and they be more likely to keep him around for another year. As for Wolf, is he really an upgrade over anything?

Now I dont know how major league ready Escobar is, but I wonder if the Brewers would either send him to Toronto for AJ Burnett, or send them JJ Hardy and call up Escobar.

Brewers supposedly are waiting to hear back from the Indians.

Link.

“Mark said he’d be in touch with me,” Melvin said, referring to Cleveland general manager Mark Shapiro. “I’m sure they’ve got to think through everything.”

Even with their No. 1 prospect, Class AA Huntsville outfielder Matt LaPorta, thought to be included in the offer, the Brewers hadn’t been able to get the Indians to say yes. Cleveland reportedly wants another top prospect included, such as Huntsville shortstop Alcides Escobar, which the Brewers consider too high of a price.

Instead, the Brewers seek to include lesser prospects with LaPorta, such as Class A Brevard County third baseman Taylor Green and perhaps his teammate Lorenzo Cain, an outfielder.

From the ESPN article:

As the Brewers compile that Plan B list of possible targets, it might include the Padres' Randy Wolf, Seattle's Erik Bedard, Oakland's Joe Blanton and Rich Harden, San Francisco's Matt Cain and Toronto's A.J. Burnett.

Bruce weighs in that the Cubs really don't have much of a chance.

LInk.

As for the Cubs, they appear to be long shots to acquire Sabathia, but not because they don't have the volume or the quality to offer Cleveland, but because the trading matchups might not be right.

That's the assessment of several baseball people queried since the middle of last week.

Sources say Cubs general manager Jim Hendry has been in touch with Cleveland GM Mark Shapiro. Those same people say the Cubs' system is valued around baseball, but that if a matching of specific needs can't be made and another club can fit that bill, there will be little Hendry can do. In other words, if the Indians were looking to build long term, they might be willing to go for a Vitters-type player instead of someone who can play next year or even now in the big leagues.

Even though the news that we're longshots for CC is bad news, I feel good knowing that "people" say the Cubs system is highly valued.

If San Fran is shopping Cain, I think we'd match up pretty nice with them. They need quantity, and i'm sure a Pie/Gallagher/Cedeno/+ offer could get their attention depending on how they view these guys.

Frankly, I think Milwaukee matches up better with San Francisco than anyone else. San Francisco has good pitching, but they need help across the diamond and power bats in the worst way. LaPorta would be a great fit as a RH power hitter. Alcides Escobar would be a massive upgrade over whatever they trot out there at SS (as would many other people). Cole Gillespie would fit in nicely in RF. Angel Salome would be a good fit, considering Bengie Molina will turn 35 next year.

I don't see why Milwaukee doesn't try making a run at Cain or Lincecum.

I may be wrong, but it really sounds like Bruce is sugarcoating things.

We have the talent, but we don't match up? Yeah, in other words, we don't have jack.
