Sigh... Jim is gonna have to get a starter now to counter this move, the Brewers are gonna be really scary down the stretch. I cringe at the thought of those late season games in Milwaukee.

Meh. It doesn't fix their horrible bullpen.

no, it doesn't, but you know that they are going to make a move to fix this too...

Hopefully that'll work like it did last year.

Quality relievers arent easy to come by, and it will take more than 1 to fix that mess.

Laporta not in starting lineup tonight at huntsville

Oh well it is a rental. Hopefully Gamel is in the deal as well.

i know melvin is capable of some stupid moves, but i can't see that being a possibility.

Why would this be a stupid move??? They already expect C.C. to test free agency at years end. Sheets is expected to try it also, if they both walk Brewers would end up with 5 of the top 51 picks in next years draft.....

The one thing I was pleasantly surprised about:

I was curious to see if Sabathia had any experience against Cubs hitters. And I found he hasn't had much. Only 68 at-bats against him, and 46 of those have been against either Soriano or Johnson. The Cubs have hit him to a tune of a .976 OPS so far though.

It certainly doesn't mean much, but I'm really glad to see Soriano (who typically has either wonderful or terrible numbers against a pitcher) has had success against Sabathia.

Didn't we tag him last year when we faced him?

I thought we did.

I'm not that disappointed. I figured that if the Brewers were willing to include LaPorta, that Cleveland would have a tough time walking away from that deal.

LaPorta might see time in Cleveland this year.

Hendry can't be faulted here. We didn't match up, especially with the Brewers offering LaPorta.

The Cubs still hold a 3.5 game lead. I still think we have the better team than the Brewers.

Now, we'll have to see where Hendry goes with Sabathia off the board.

sorry, i meant to say that including both gamel and laporta would be a stupid move. The move that appears to have just gone through makes perfect sense.

I fear that there is no one out there other than Burnett, and I'm not that sold on him yet.

Everyone else is in the race or no one is going to give up on their young starting pitching. Harden and the A's are in the race. No way Giants give up on Lincecum. No way San Diego gives up Peavy. I believe the Rockies said that they won't give up Aaron Cook.

We might end up getting stuck with Randy Wolf and/or Greg Maddux. Or maybe someone like Bedard.

Buy low on Burnett, hope Hill has turned a corner. Best case is Zambrano/Dempster/Burnett/Lilly/Hill forming the deepest rotation in the game. Worst case one of Dempster/Burnett/Hill should be very strong to complement Z in the playoff rotation.

It was 2 years ago, and yes we did. 9 runs in 2 1/3 innings. The only 4 Cubs in the starting lineup that are on the roster today: Ramirez, Murton, Cedeno, Blanco. Ramirez was 2-2 against him that day, Murton 0-1 with a walk, Cedeno 0-2, and Blanco 1-2.

I still have this sinking feeling Hendry thinks Randy Wolf is the answer to the rotation question.

I don't see the A's giving up on the season enough to trade Harden. I'm not impressed enough with Harang and think the Reds would want too much for him. Bedard is being skipped in his next start, and the Mariners asking price is too high there. Burnett is probably the best bet.

If Marshall can keep pitching like he did today that would be a big lift for the rotation. I was not that impressed with him last year but today he was very sharp and looks like he has improved his command.

I think Burnett, Wolf or Maddux is it.

WORLD SERIES OR BUST! I love the trade! Eat your hearts out Cubs fans! Thanks Tom!

Take that cubs and your 7 or so crappy all-stars - have your fun now because somethings brewing in MILTOWN!!!!

Don't look down Cubs but we are comin to get cha!!!!

I hate that CC is coming into the division but I'm not that bent out of shape about it. I'm glad it's a guy who pitches once every 5 games as opposed to a guy who hits every day. This makes Milwaukee very tough but they still have a lot of question marks with Sheets' health (as always) and their pen. If Hendry can land Burnett or Harden and stay away from Wolf and Maddux (I don't have great confidence that he will), then I'll be even less concerned.

While most agree that Burnett is the next best option, has there been any legitimate (read not Steve Phillips) rumors linking us and him?

I'm not certain Maddux would be much of an improvement. Wolf? I'm not sold on him either. I'd rather take my chances that Burnett goes Rick Sutcliffe in a return to the NL.

I'm not sure Sheets is going to make it through the season.

He's #1 on the PAP. Sabatha is 5th.

Obviously, this is a great move for the Brewers (on paper). However, the Cubs have killed lefties this year and The Crew still have Ned F. Yost managing the team.

Let's see who Hendry pulls out of his hat this year.

Beane said, "You're either rebuilding for something special, or you're on the verge of something special. To be in between is foolish." I wonder were he thinks the A's are now? Rich Harden would look nice in Cub Pin stripes.

You didn't need to mention he was #1 in PAP, you could have just said something like this, "I don't think Ben Sheets will make it through the season because he's Ben Sheets."

I'm not convinced Maddux would be any help at all. Burnett is probably the best option. There's also the possibility it could be someone nobody has mentioned.

Wolf hasn't been that great, and his numbers have been helped by Petco.
