The fact that most rational people are upset about this has very little to do with the potential good or suckage Edmonds will bring or their general hatred of him. It has everything to do with the Cubs mishandling yet another of their young players. Period, end of story. If there was nobody to put out there other than Johnson, fine, do it, but that's not the case.

The fact that he will most likely be bad just adds to the dislike of the move.

Pie is still young, and there is no reason to believe his career is over or mismanaged to minutia. What surprises me is so that so many people around here are surprised by this move. Hendry and Piniella have repeatedly stated a desire to find a left-handed HR potential to plug in the 5-spot.

Pie, even is if he excels in his limited role so far, doesn't fit the bill for this season (emphasis on this season). It is debatable, obviously, whether or not Edmonds fits the bill, but clearly management feels he has a better shot this year than Pie at satisfying the need.

I don't see this as being about approval or disapproval of Pie's production. It's about the 2008 lineup puzzle that Piniella and Hendry obsess over. They want that lefty HR potential in the middle.

Switching gears: should Edmonds get in the lineup and produce at all, it's likely Fukudome finally moves up to 2-spot and Theriot down to the 8-spot, which means we might see Lee and Ramirez hitting in the first inning with Fukudome on about 40% of the time all season long. I like that quite a bit.

So to get a #5 hitter with hr power, they signed an old guy with 1 hr in 90 ABs this season and 12 in 365 last season. That's a miserable failure at procuring the desired player type. He went from 1 hr every 11 abs in 2004 to 1 every 17 to 18 to 30 to 90 (ok, last data point is weak, but I'm keeping it). This is a guy who would be lucky to hit 15 hr if he played a whole season.

Here's my take on it: Pie has to stay in the minors at least ten days (unless coming back earlier to replace an injured player). So Edmonds has ten days to show if he has anything left in the tank. If he doesn't the Cubs can release him without sacrificing much (just a prorated share of the major league minimum salary) and bring Pie back. I don't really like the move, but it's very low risk and not the end of the world.

Do you have faith in the cubs to do that? I think they give Edmonds every chance to succeed. In other words, much more than they gave Pie.

I fixeded this for you.

I don't like this move and I hope it works out for the Cubs. But, if this move backfires and the Cubs lose the nice little momentum they have had, I won't be happy. That being said, I'll wait and let things develop.

OK, I'm not much for coming down on the board as the board isn't really a person. However, here's the deal: I freaking hated Jim Edmonds, mostly because he was a show-off, but he was good. Now he probably isn't good, but he'll be playing for the Cubs. Boy does that suck (no pun intended).

If he sucks (no pun intended) lets all pile on JIM HENDRY (no pun intended) not Jim Edmonds. Edmonds didn't hold a gun to Hendry's head (or more likely a dozen crispy creams to his mouth. See, I'm piling on already). Edmonds is a mostly innocent party to this travishamockery.

So, let's all get behind Edmonds (no pun intended) and give him a break.

I hope he admires a dozen HRs and really sticks it to the Cardinals (no pun intended).

There, I said it.

That ended up being a lot of puns without intention.

I hate this move not because of personal feelings towards Edmonds. Heck, if the Cubs somehow traded for Rick Ankiel to play CF, I'd be thrilled. I hate this move because what the Cubs can reasonably expect from Edmonds this year is worse than what the Cubs can reasonably expect with Pie. Why the Cubs don't see anything in Pie is beyond insane.

I agree. However, the hate of Edmonds was overshadowing what a stupid move this is. That's all I was trying to point out.

The fact that the washed up vet is Edmonds is coincidental, but it makes it much worse.

I just can't stomach the fact that he will be any part of this team. He disgraces everything Cubs when he puts that uniform on :blackeye:

I don't dislike alot of players per say but he is one of them at the very top.

If I was 21, I'd be drinking heavily right about now. Alas, I have to wait 2 more months for this team to drive me to the bottle.

I am sure you have dispensation my son. You should have started a long time ago.

if you're going to whine about this deal, please whine about it on the basis that edmonds sucks and not that you don't like edmonds.

amen

Why can't you complain about it for both reasons? The gay jokes are stupid. But the Cubs signed a guy hated by many of their fans (and their #1 pitcher) maybe more so than any player over the last 5-10 years. I don't see why I can't be pissed that the Cubs not only signed a crappy player, but one that I've grown to hate. The Cubs could have signed a bunch of other crappy players that I would have been pissed about, but the fact that I hate this guy and he sucks makes it worse.

If the Cubs signed Lenny Dykstra at the end of his career, would you not expect their fans to be pissed, even though he wasn't a bad player?

just kinda brainstorming out loud here, but if edmonds is indeed washed up, maybe we can see if brian mcrae or lance johnson have anything left in the tank?

I hear Stan Musial's available.

Maybe the most underrated player in baseball history. Had he played in New York or Boston he'd be a deity like Mantle or Williams.

that would be unfortunate, because he wasn't as good as either of those guys... he was very slightly worse than mantle but appreciably worse than williams.

I didn't say he was better than them, because he wasn't, but was merely saying that he'd be a lot more famous than he is now.

why is Edmonds hated more than any other player on any other opposing team? I absolutely hated him while he was with the Cardinals mostly because he was an offensive machine, but I also hated the other 24 members of the team. is it because he showboated on a home run hit off Zambrano? as much as I don't care for it personally, I'd probably stop and stare a bit if I hit a bomb off of a premier MLB pitcher.

the fact remains that for several seasons, he was one of the top players in the game. it shouldn't make a difference that he did it in a Cardinals jersey while they were winning vs a Pirates jersey while they were 35 games back

and because our own hot-headed starting pitcher got his panties in a bunch over Edmonds admiring a homerun (something no one on the Cubs ever does ever ever)

Are you serious? Of course it makes a difference when a player dominates on your arch rival rather than some random baseball team.

I don't think people actually hate him. But people disliked him because he showboated and got lots of undeserved adulation for unnecessary dives and for being a Cardinal. Plus, he was really good, which made him a villain. He was easy to dislike.

Sometimes it's OK to have emotions when you watch a game. You don't have to stay totally detached from everything.

It's a game, for crying out loud.

Any dislike I have for Edmonds decreased significantly when he left the Cards, and decreased significantly more when I realized the Cubs signing him would cause much grief for Cards fans.

And let's face it, if the Cubs were getting Edmonds circa 2003-04, all the haters would be dancing in the streets.

how so? if Edmonds is the reason the Cubs go 6-12 against the Cardinals, what's the difference if Bay is the reason the Cubs go 6-12 against the Pirates? the Cubs, as a team, still stunk. why Edmonds? why not Pujols? age jokes aside, Pujols is widely regarded as an impressive beast of a baseball person even amongst Cubs fans. Edmonds seems to be hated mostly because of the home run against Zambrano with a lot of the half shirt and childish gay jokes

My "says you" was actually in jest.

The best gay jokes I have ever heard came straight from gay people.
