Edmonds seems to be hated mostly because of the home run against Zambrano with a lot of the half shirt and childish gay jokes

Says you.

So you're cool with gay jokes?

The best gay jokes I have ever heard came straight from gay people.

Let's hear some. :D

just kinda brainstorming out loud here, but if edmonds is indeed washed up, maybe we can see if brian mcrae or lance johnson have anything left in the tank?

I would love to see if Davey Martinez still has anything left.

So would Cindy

why is Edmonds hated more than any other player on any other opposing team? I absolutely hated him while he was with the Cardinals mostly because he was an offensive machine, but I also hated the other 24 members of the team. is it because he showboated on a home run hit off Zambrano? as much as I don't care for it personally, I'd probably stop and stare a bit if I hit a bomb off of a premier MLB pitcher.

the fact remains that for several seasons, he was one of the top players in the game. it shouldn't make a difference that he did it in a Cardinals jersey while they were winning vs a Pirates jersey while they were 35 games back

Are you serious? Of course it makes a difference when a player dominates on your arch rival rather than some random baseball team.

how so? if Edmonds is the reason the Cubs go 6-12 against the Cardinals, what's the difference if Bay is the reason the Cubs go 6-12 against the Pirates? the Cubs, as a team, still stunk. why Edmonds? why not Pujols? age jokes aside, Pujols is widely regarded as an impressive beast of a baseball person even amongst Cubs fans. Edmonds seems to be hated mostly because of the home run against Zambrano with a lot of the half shirt and childish gay jokes

Honestly, if you don't understand why a Cubs fan would have more disdain for a member of the Cardinals than a member of the Pirates, I really don't know what to tell you.

And Edmonds isn't only hated cause he's cool and hit HR's. He was overly dramatic in the field, admired all of his HR's, bitched about Wrigley, complained about EVERY called strike, whined a lot in general, etc. etc. etc.

OK, I'm not much for coming down on the board as the board isn't really a person. However, here's the deal: I freaking hated Jim Edmonds, mostly because he was a show-off, but he was good. Now he probably isn't good, but he'll be playing for the Cubs. Boy does that suck (no pun intended).

If he sucks (no pun intended) lets all pile on JIM HENDRY (no pun intended) not Jim Edmonds. Edmonds didn't hold a gun to Hendry's head (or more likely a dozen crispy creams to his mouth. See, I'm piling on already). Edmonds is a mostly innocent party to this travishamockery.

So, let's all get behind Edmonds (no pun intended) and give him a break.

I hope he admires a dozen HRs and really sticks it to the Cardinals (no pun intended).

There, I said it.

I think at least one of those puns was intended.

Most stupid posts don't deserve a reply but the above is so beyond stupid it demands one.

You wouldn't want Fat Albert Pujols?

I like how he managed to simultaneously defend Edmonds and make fun of him.

if you're going to whine about this deal, please whine about it on the basis that edmonds sucks and not that you don't like edmonds.

Fine I dislike him AND I think he sucks....

because it's stupid to hate someone you don't know. you just don't like him because he used to play for the cardinals.

Actually, I don't think you have any idea why I don't like him. And I hate lots of people I don't know and I'm guessing you do too, so I'd be careful casting that particular stone.

There are many Cardinals I didn't like b/c they were Cardinals, were good against the Cubs, yet terrible at baseball, generally (I'm looking at you Mr. Vina). There were and are some Cardinals that I actually like watching (Wainwright comes to mind). There are some that I loathe - and Edmonds is at the front of that group. (btw - there are a lot of athletes that I hate that have never been affiliated with a rival of one of my favorite teams, the fact that he was a Cardinal just added to it) Part of it is his HR stare, part of it is the completely unnecessary diving (and the media's and fan's hype of his defense that comes with it). Whatever it is, I didn't like him before he went to the Cards and I really don't like him now. The fact that my favorite team in all of sport signed him when he's a washed up has been and that resulted in what I believe was a stupid move (sending Pie down) makes it worse.

It may not be rational to hate or extremely dislike a baseball player (or anyone you don't know), but not everything people do is 100% rational. I'd guess that this even applies to you at times.

obviously you can hate who you want to hate. My problem is this takes away from the rational and logical argument against the trade. Most of what I've read has focused on his relationship with the fans rather than the completely ridiculous usage of Johnson/Pie early, and now the indefensible acquisition of a bad baseball player.

Oh, I agree. And the gay jokes have made it that much more stupid. But the suggestion that people shouldn't allow their dislike of him as a player to influence their opinion of the move is a little extreme to me.

Says you.

says most rational and mature people everywhere

So now you're trying to say that you're mature?

But anyway, if Edmonds was still good, him being a Cub would still take some getting used to. The fact that he is so far past his prime makes the fact that I don't like him so much worse. Not liking him isn't the primary reason I hate the move, but its an insult to injury type thing. His crapiness really highlights the disdain.

I couldn't really care less about these "rivalries" beyond the friendly back and forth joking/ribbing that they bring between fans when you go to those particular games.

Do people actually "hate" the Cardinals? Really?

Not as much as I hate Notre Dame, and I don't even really care about college sports.

That's how crazy irrational hatred can be. It's crazy and I know it.

Not anymore. The team with Edmonds, Rolen, Encarnacion, Eckstein, and a healthy Chris Carpenter? You bet your ass I hated them.

Maybe I am, but I'm a huge baseball fan. I get into it big time. I love watching the Cubs win, and I hate it when they lose. I also have naturally come to really like certain players, and really dislike certain other players. Jim Edmonds is one of those players that I don't like. Most Cubs fans share the same sentiment. It's not that hard to understand.

yeah, it is hard to understand.

some of you need to get a life. you HATE someone because he stares at his homeruns and dives in the outfield? HATE?? seriously, HATE?? not because he's a wife beater or a child molestor, but because he played for the cardinals and argued balls and strikes? get a hold of yourself, my goodness.

I think it is mostly just talk.

As soon as Edmonds hits a HR (and watches it) Cub fans will embrace him (get your head out of the gutter).

Are you really this daft?

I don't mean hate in the sense that I want him dead. I didn't need that everything needed to be said so freaking literally in order for people to understand something.

But what do you mean by hate if not the literal definition? I can understand "hating" Jim Edmonds the Cardinal from earlier this decade. I don't understand how that carries over to now.

wait, wait, wait. What's the literal definition, anyway? abuck equates it as being worthy of child molesters, and you -- trying to make literal meanings more clear -- can understand the literal term, when used with 40-hr edmonds? Just seems like you combined two different argument strands into one . . . and don't make sense anymore.

Can we all just agree that "hate" in sports means something different? It's really easy. I hate the cardinals, i hate political oppression, and no clarification should be needed for that. :)

Man, your posts are real jerky today.

Define hate for me and I'll tell you if it applies to Edmonds. I don't like him and that doesn't change because he's now a Cub. There have been several Cubs over the years that I didn't like - just b/c I want the team to win doesn't mean I like each player. Do you like Jim Hendry?

Edmonds falls below wife beaters and child molesters on my list of hate. But he's on the list. I just don't get why this is such a big deal to you. You think I'm stupid and need to get a life because I don't like Jim Edmonds? Right back at you, can we move on now?
