I come from a long line of Chicago Cubs fans that have a long history of 'hating' Saint Louis Cardinals.

It is my birth right to 'hate' Jim Edmonds if I so choose to... and I do.

I don't even 'hate' Jim Edmonds solely because he was a Cardinal... I 'hate' him because he is Jim Edmonds the showboating trash-talking complainer of the strike zone that has very annoying quirks about him.

I respect the Saint Louis Cardinals and I have a lot of respect for the rivalry but I have very little respect for Jim Edmonds the ball player.

It is my birth right to be sick over him becoming part of our history even if it is in the smallest way.

you're right...you can hate him if you want. but it sounds like you live a terrible existence.

yeah, it is hard to understand.

some of you need to get a life. you HATE someone because he stares at his homeruns and dives in the outfield? HATE?? seriously, HATE?? not because he's a wife beater or a child molestor, but because he played for the cardinals and argued balls and strikes? get a hold of yourself, my goodness.

Man, your posts are real jerky today.

Define hate for me and I'll tell you if it applies to Edmonds. I don't like him and that doesn't change because he's now a Cub. There have been several Cubs over the years that I didn't like - just b/c I want the team to win doesn't mean I like each player. Do you like Jim Hendry?

Edmonds falls below wife beaters and child molesters on my list of hate. But he's on the list. I just don't get why this is such a big deal to you. You think I'm stupid and need to get a life because I don't like Jim Edmonds? Right back at you, can we move on now?

sure. if you want to live your life shaking your fist at clouds like grandpa simpson, it's certainly your right.

and you can follow behind me, hugging everyone I hate and scoffing at my distaste for certain members of society

Ditto and I find it hard to grasp why any other Cubs fan wouldnt feel the same way. Also makes me very happy to feel this way, and I certainly dont think there is any reason to be critical of anyone that feels this way, but hey whatever makes you happy. I'll boo him everytime he comes to the plate, regardless of the outcome. He sucks. Hate hate hate hate hate...

This has gotten surreal. Please, let's demonstrate some respect for each other. Disagreement is fine, but let's acknowledge that everyone is entitled to their opinion.

You got that from my thoughts on Jim Edmonds?

you are "sick" over some guy you've never met putting on a cubs' shirt. that sounds terrible.

Ok, fair enough if you want to take the words so literally.

I have met Jim Edmonds, I have talked to him and joked with him dozens of times. From what I know he is an ok guy in real life. I can't stand him as a ball player and the fact he is on the Cubs is beyond annoying. I did not lose any sleep over it but I still find it extremely aggravating as do many many many other Cubs fans.

I hope my clarified comments don't give you any reason to speculate that I am standing on the Poplar Street bridge ready to jump.

only a random Jim Edmonds signing can make me agree with abuck. these posts are bizarre in their vitriol

I wish I had lots of time on my hands, b/c I do some searching for posts by you and abuck saying you "hate" certain things that, if taken literally, people would find irrational, "bizarre" or even "stupid."

I'm more surprised by the bizarre response to people saying they hate Jim Edmunds.

they are meatball posts.

The word is meathead, not "meatball."

And I agree with you guys that some of these posts are absolutely ridiculous. Hate Edmonds for being a 38 year old, washed up outfielder that is a bad player. Don't hate Edmonds just because he was on a rival team. I really don't care if he spent most of his career on the Cardinals. The reason I don't like the guy is because he can't hit major league pitching and the fact that he's a bad fielder as well.

I guess I am also concerned with the nature of the language used towards a baseball player. "Hate" is certainly a strong adjective used to describe situations that are horrifying and a human (or thing) that causes such a violent reaction that there is no other situation other then to be violent back.

In my line of thinking, little in this world demands such a violent reaction.

The simple truth is.....I don't hate (I may not like some players, but hate i too strong, and this world has too much hate, as is) any player in the Majors. I recognize the fact that while he was an incredibly annoying/obnoxious player for the Cards, he was also a great player. And I know this poart is a longshot right now, but if Edmonds helps the Cubs to the World Series, and helps win the series, he will, along with the rest of the Cubs, be revered by me, for the rest of my life.

IDC what he did as a Cards, he's a Cub now, and I will support him, until e is no longer a Cub.

no, if you oppose this signing you're a "meatball," regardless of how good your reasons are for opposing it.

BP's Christina Kahrl on the Edmonds signing

it's premium, but i'll copy a couple of notes from the piece.

There's something sort of remarkable about one of the league's best offenses being worked up over its one last almost-unproductive lineup spot, but here we are, with the Cubs scraping up the odds and ends of what's left of Jim Edmonds, perhaps to sow them, perhaps in hope that the monster that used to chew them to bits will become the center-field myrmidon of their present fancy. There wasn't a lot to suggest that Edmonds had anything left when he was discarded to the Padres, so it isn't any easier to play make believe and say that he'll be able to help out now.

Regardless, it's a bit silly to get worked up over how Pie “failed,” because he didn't. Failure might be the operative term, but it was a failure by management—by Jim Hendry, by Lou Piniella, by the organization, and perhaps by a few thousand squealing teens worked up over Reed Johnson's socks and soul patch—but not by Pie. How could he fail? He got consecutive starts in only two little globs on the young season: a four-game stretch to open the year, and a three-game stretch in Cincinnati from May 5th through 7th. In both instances, he only went hitless in the last game of those stretches, and both times, that oh-fer was rewarded with multiple games and days out of the starting lineup. Yeah, that's a great way to get the kid going. Absolutely brilliant.

Pie, like Rich Hill, is a lot easier to blame—being optionable—than bad management decisions like Jason Marquis or Jon Lieber in the rotation, or the sudden conviction that Reed Johnson is a tremendous speed player and a near-regular center fielder, as opposed to a solid fourth outfielder who can help out when you have a lefty-hitting regular or two in the starting lineup. As a veteran caddy for Pie, he made great sense, but as the guy who's going to wind up playing a lot of center when Edmonds can't—which is certain to happen—as well as his platoon partner and pair of fresh legs, Johnson doesn't really work.

The small potential for some positive results:

First, there's the off chance that Edmonds has something left in the tank, and keeps Johnson pinned in a reserve role he's better suited for. That's fine, and if you were a franchise that didn't have a prospect as interesting as Pie to plug in to a lineup already well-stocked with veteran talent, it would make perfect sense. Edmonds notionally gives the Cubs the chance to put the veteran lefty power source in the middle of the lineup, push Kosuke Fukudome up to the second slot, and let them get Ryan Theriot down at the bottom.

Oh, that's better. You tell people that they can't hate a player because he played on a team that is the rival of their favorite sports team. But you support hating him b/c he's bad at baseball. Fantastic. Nothing like calling others ridiculous and following it up with air tight logic such as this.

I understand hating rival teams. I absolutely despise all things Cardinals and Yankees. So let's rewind to where we were a few months ago when A-Rod was supposedly testing the free agent waters. You're seriously saying that if you really hate the Yankees that you wouldn't want to sign A-Rod because he played for the Yankees? That's preposterous. I would use Pujols as an example, but I don't want to get into a Lee vs. Pujols debate on a freakin Jim Edmonds thread.

It is ridiculous to hate a player just because he played for a rival team and is now on your team. I hated Jim Edmonds because he was a Cardinal, just like I hated all of the Cardinals players. But if we actually signed a good player from the Cardinals, I wouldn't give a damn if he played for that team as long as he contributes to my team winning. I highly doubt Jim Edmonds is going to contribute anything positive to this team, so that's why I hate the signing. Not because of the fact he was with a rival ballclub for several years.

The Yanks are different then the Cardinals. I can't think of anyone on the Yanks that I really dislike. I can't watch Mussina pitch, but other then that......

Also, there's a big difference between what kind of a player Jim Edmonds is right now and what ARod is right now. If Pujols could play CF and he was a FA I'd want the Cubs to sign him. Jim Edmonds............ not so much.

Right, which is the point I was trying to make. Like I said, I would've used the Pujols example, but I'm not going to get into a debate that's been beaten to death time after time after time on here.
