Our latest offer for Roberts according to one of the insiders over at orioleshangout:

Fresh off a text message:

"Patterson, Murton, Gallagher, Guzman"

Thats the latest offer from them to us.

Fire away.

I think it's clear Hendry has no idea how to haggle.

If we were exchanging baseball cards, I'd be all over it.

That's a lot to give up for 1 role player. They get 3 guys that can make their 25-man roster and a "no-risk/high reward" pitcher in Guzman. I'd probably do it without the Gooz, unless they throw in a pitching prospect.

It's apparent the Cubs don't view Patterson as a viable second baseman any longer, and as a LF, I'm less than enamored with him. I'm not upset over losing him.

Murton- I hate to give him up as I think he has skills that our team could use. He doesn't really have a position. I can give him up as well.

Gallagher- This is the one that hurts. I'd love to replace him with Veal, Hart, or Marshall.

Guzman- meh. At one time what could we have gotten for him? He's damaged goods.

All in all, it's not a horrible deal on our part. Essentially, Murton + Gallagher for Roberts. I'd rather choose another target than Roberts if we're trading Gallagher though.

That's my thought on it as well. Why give up so much for Roberts, why not explore at other options which might make more sense.

Why would you say that? That's significantly less than Baltimore was asking for at the beginning of negotiations.

Ya, IIRC, they were asking for Hill & Marshall (or at least Steve Phillips said so)

Because it's Hendry that should hold the cards. We have DeRosa, Theriot, Cedeno and Fontenot. We just landed our #1 target. Adam Everett is out there, non-tendered, waiting to be picked up. Baltimore sucks, and they aren't going to compete anytime soon, and when they do, Brian Roberts will be like 44.

There's not way in hell we should be giving up 4 players from our 40 man for a redundant role player.

...I'm not saying that they actually will trade for him [Greene]. We have no reason to believe they will. I am saying that they should, however.

The problem with saying what trades we should make is always that we don't know what the other team would demand. if Padres demand Hill for Greene, should we do it? Definitely not. If they demand Pie, Gallagher, and Murton, should we do it? I'd think not, but I suppose you could discuss it. Gallagher, Wuertz, and Cedeno, would they take that? Pie, Gallagher, and Wuertz?

It seems to me that the board has had kind of a lot of discussions about Greene that have tended to assume he's available at not too bad a price. I don't see where that came from. Greene is a star-fielding SS with exceptional SS power, and he's young. Despite his low OBP, the overall package is above average for a starting SS, and above-average starting SS's cost a mint. I don't imagine the kind of packages that seem realistic for Roberts would come close to getting Greene.

I know there was some rumor that at one point Greene's name came up and Pie was mentioned and the Cubs said Pie wasn't available. That doesn't mean they offered Greene for Pie straight, though, or would do so now. Perhaps Pie was one of three names along with marmol and Soto, and when they got to Pie Hendry said forget it. Who knows.

But I think it's highly questionable that Greene is currently available for Pie and/or expendable parts.

It's not essentially anything. It is what it is....4 players. Granted, I'm not high on Patterson anymore and I think Guzman may be done pitching effectively.....but they are still included, and they still have at least a remote shot of doing something positive for the Cubs. And both are being traded at their lowest possible value.

Let's see what happens with this deal.

Before

DeRosa plays 2nd on normal days

Murton fills in at RF when either Fukudome or Pie need days off (Fukudome moves to CF and Murton in RF when Pie needs a day off)

When DeRosa plays 3rd, 1st, or has a day off, Cedeno or Fontenot play 2nd.

After

Roberts plays 2nd

DeRosa is the primary backup at 2nd, 3rd, RF, and CF (Fukudome moves to CF and DeRosa to RF when Pie needs a day off)

The 200 to 300 at-bats that would go to Fontenot are gone.

It's definitely an upgrade. If this deal goes through, I hope the Cubs could find a right-handed masher for the bench which would make the bench DeRosa, Ward, right-handed power hitter, Cedeno, and Blanco.

The two biggest parts of this deal is how good do you feel about Aramis's health and can DeRosa also play some SS. If DeRosa is needed at 3rd or SS specifically for more than 40 games this year, then Roberts is enough of an upgrade overall to make that deal. If they don't feel DeRosa can play any SS at all and feel Aramis should remain healthy, then stand pat with what you have.

When I heard of the Tejada trade, I thought it was the first step in a series including Roberts to Cubs for Cedeno and others.

Too bad it's not the old Tejada trade...Prior for Tejada and Bedard...

Total fantasy. The O's wanted more than just Prior for Tejada alone.

I think there's a misconception that that trade was actually on the table for the Cubs to discuss. The O's wanted Prior for Tejada, straight up. It was Hendry that was insisting on Bedard's inclusion and the O's refusal to do this was essentially why a deal never got done. At least, that's how I remember it.

Just thought I should point that out.

I really really hope Fontenot is not on the Cubs 25 man.

He's been pretty reliable. He's actually got a contact inside the Cubs organization.

I don't know if it's the same one, but I believe the Tejada deal earlier today was broken by one of them.

I don't really understand the notion that the Cubs acquiring Khalil Greene is paramount to getting Brian Roberts because "we need a SS more than a 2B."

Roberts would change the face of our offense. Either acquisition would be great. Despite Greene's low OB% - he does bring things to the table that would definately make the Cubs a better team (great defense, run production) and he would be a great improvement.

Despite all the options we have at 2B, adding Roberts would be bigger than adding Greene, IMO. Roberts would give us a great leadoff hitter, and force (I would think) Soriano into the heart of the order.

Roberts had a 285 EQA last year

DeRosa had a 268 EQA last year

17 point difference

Theriot had a 238 EQA last year

Greene had a 263 EQA last year

25 point difference

And thats not even considering the defensive upgrade.

BTW, one of the posts of the year over there:

Ok...

Roberts for Murton, Patterson, Gallagher and let's sub Cedeno is on the table.

Bedard for Pie, Hill, Prior and Marmol is fair return.

Payton plays CF and Bradford goes to the pen for the Cubbies for Veal.

What's your everyday 13 player trade? Especially since the Cubs and O's seem to only deal with each other.

Cubs folks, does a trade like this seem plausible?

To say NSBB would explode would be the understatement of the year if ever a deal like that went down! I mean, he's completely serious with that post. I, uh, don't know what to say.

Hahahahahaha, I guess the Orioles just release like 7 guys from the 25-man after that deal, and who the hell is Bradford that we'd give up Veal for him? I don't know a Bradford.
