I don't dislike DeRosa, but when you really break it down, isn't he Todd Walker at best? Walker was making a lot less money too. I'm nonplussed but I'll give Hendry the benefit of the doubt for now.

Honestly, what has he done exactly to deserve the benefit of the doubt?

Thats what I thought of this signing; a right-handed version of Walker. I don't feel particularly bad about this signing, but not particularly great either.

Todd Walker was never as bad as DeRosa is capable of being, he's usually been much better. And he cost $2.5 million.

Just for fun, last year PECOTA pegged his 2007 production at replacement level and declined to rank 2008 or beyond as he was predicted to be out of baseball with only a 1/3 shot at remaining in the league in 2007.

Jones had approx. 431 PAs against right handers in 2006. In those PAs he hit .303/.358/.528/.886 including 21 home runs and 59 RBIs.

De Rosa had approx. 159 PAs against left handers in 2006, In those PAs he hit .342/.394/.589/.983 including 7 home runs and 27 RBIs.

If they were played in a straight platoon, and we made an assumption that 67% of the at bats were against righties (Jones) and 33% of the at bats were against lefties (De Rosa), their combined stats would weight to:

.316/.370/.548/.918 including 30 home runs and 96 Rbis. They make a combined $9.67M in 2007. That seems like good value.

At best: Todd Walker with the ability to play 6 positions, and at least playing a couple of them above average.

At worst: Neifi Perez with the ability to play OF

He's being paid like a regular. Even the Yankees don't have super expensive bench guys.

Unless Lou asked Hendry to beef up the bench big time due to the day games and this might put a couple of young guys on the bench to save some dough..

Ding ding ding ding!

I think you hit the nail on the head.

But you still didn't have to run out and pay him 3x what he deserved. We way overpaid. If we paid him about $2m, I wouldn't care. If that extra $2m per is the difference between a crappy OF and JD Drew, I'm going to be bloody ticked.

If we paid him 2 million, we wouldn't have gotten him. I'm not sure if that's what we would have wanted at that point, but he wasn't coming here for 2 million dollars.

Then I'd live with missing out on him. He made $675k last year. He would have taken $2m, because I cannot imagine another team giving him more per.

I think the Phillies would have easily paid him more than 2 per. They were looking at him to fill a starting spot and had already expressed great iinterest in him.

I doubt we'll see him play 2B everyday. He'll play some at 2B, he'll back up Ramirez at 3B, and he'll platoon with Jones in RF. I expect him to get around 300-400 at bats. This number could go up or go down, depending on what Theriot and EPatt do with opportunities given to them.

I like him as a back-up to Ramirez.

You like paying him $4.3m to back him up?

yes, but not just 3B. I like an .800+ OPS to get 450 AB's at various positions.

You don't know if he's going to put up an .800+ OPS. He has only done it once, in 2006, in his career and his career OPS is .735.

That's also assuming they repeated 2006, career years for both, and are used only in such a platoon role, an impossibility.

Sounds good to me. As long as he's not the starting 2B for the next three years. Its painfully obvious that Jones needs someone to play RF against lefties. I hope its going to be DeRosa, but I don't think it will be.

Except the excuse will be they weren't interested in Drew and this money had nothing to do with it. It's pretty clear DeRosa was the guy they had their eyes on after the meetings.

That is contrasry to news reports, which indicate Soriano was the number one target coming out of the meetings. I can't reading anything that mentioned to DeRosa for the Cubs, other than sports writers speculation.

And unlike, Dusty, Lou may actually employ such a platoon.

Not bloody likely! I'll be peeved too but as I say every year, let's let Mr. Hendry finish and then beat the heck out of him.

DeRosa isn't going to be a platoon partner for Jones.

Jones is trade bait. It doesn't make sense to get a platoon partner for him this early.

He's our starting 2B, which I'm not too thrilled about.

Let's hope Hendry's next moves are alot better.

The first guy Hendry signs out of the meetings is the guy they were dead set on signing. Soriano might be a target, like Furcal was, but he's not deadset on signing him.

Thanks for posting that Hoops, I think this is what Jim and Lou have in mind for DeRosa. I dont doubt that he will play some 2b but I think he's mainly being brough aboard to platoon with JJ. I think he's a great platoon partner for JJ and also strengthens our bench a great deal. At least that how I hope Lou will use him...

i believe he's a platoon player. over the last three seasons, he's played 48 total games at 2B, 34 games at SS and 85 games in RF. hendry isn't the starpest tool in the shed.

Then good for the Phillies. Let them overpay for a utility IF.

Let's be clear: We didn't overpay for JD Drew or Barry Zito or someone who's actually good. We overpaid for a player who's somewhere between Mark Grudzielanek and Neifi Perez.

Make mine a double.

Some times a leopard cannont change his spots, Hendry continues to overpay for crappy ball players.

If we're not going to give an oppotunity to Cedeno,Theriot,Moore then Hendry better find someone to take them that will give us a legit power bat in return. What spot did Derosa hit in last year??.

Primarily 5th and 6th in the order with a little time batting 2nd.

I would agree that the contract is over what I would have paid him-but really all the contracts together so far, we're still under what we were projecting budget-wise going into getting out impact SP and bats. Let's see if we actually get those-that will tell the tale or not if this is a good offseason, not this signing.

hoops,

You've actually made me feel a bit better about the signing. I'm now banking on the fact that Piniella is smarter than Dusty and understands the term 'platoon'.

Why pay a guy 4 million dollars per year to be a partime player. Even if he does platoon it makes Hendry twice the bad GM, first for giving Jones the money he did and then for giving Derosa the money.

Put those two salaries together and add Rusch's slaray and the Cubs could probably get close to signing Drew.
