It's way too much of a commitment to someone who only figures to be an asset against left-handers. A platoon of Jacque Jones and DeRosa in right field would be very productive, but the Cubs are probably going to give DeRosa a chance to be their primary second baseman. DeRosa turns 32 in February and is a career .260/.316/.366 hitter against righties (to put that in perspective, Neifi Perez is a career .268/.298/.376 hitter). Versus lefties, he has an impressive .306/.367/.497 line.

Platoon him and Jaque.. Im likin those numbers against lefties

Or maybe send Cedeno in the deal for Westbrook they need a 2B. Send them Novoa, Cedeno, and some minor leaguers.

I would find it hard to believe that any GM would trade anything for Ronny Cedeno. Cedeno could be the worst player in major league baseball to have had 500 PAs in 2006. I don't ever want to see him playing in a Cubs game again (unless he happens to be wearing the opponent's uniform).

Hendry's being proactive. I'm not much for DeRosa, but if it results in us trading Izturis as part of a package for Westbrook, I'll live. :D

are there actual rumors out about this or is it our wishful thinking?

just wishful thinking on may part.

sorry, i didnt want to start a rumor just give my opinion.

well it would be nice.

Oh cripes, and his BABIP was .348 last year too.

That's obviously because he finally played a full season.

Still can't believe they gave so much playing time to a career .298 OBP

It's wishful thinking. I don't know why Cleveland should want any part of Izturis.

i think they do need a ss

some say they're going to sign Belliard back

You can call it a career year if you like, but it also represents the first year he played everyday. Others can make the argument that partial year stats for the career are less valuable than a full season of everyday play.

People choose to use career numbers when it suits their position (ala Giles discussions) while ignoring 2006, so it goes both ways.

For what's it worth, in an all-star or bust at every position only mentality around here, here is the 2006 comparison:

Cubs 2006 2B: .274/.326/.411/.737

DeRosa 2006: .296/.357/.456/.813

Even with regression to appease the career stats crowd, it looks like an upgrade to me.

"People" might use it when they like. I use career, trends and recent all the time. DeRosa doesn't have much in his favor, not for a 3-year deal.

I doubt they give up on Peralta, I think he just signed a deal last winter.

So you're saying he'll be able to keep that up, right? :D

His LD% did spike upwards too, so he only outperformed it by about 10-15 points, but no, odds are that BABIP free falls back near .300.

Oh God. He found a replacement Neifi.

Damn, he's 6'1", so clearly he isn't the scrappy player we were all hoping for. Perhaps he is hard-nosed though. Or a gamer?

Why were we so quick to sign DeRosa? Why not hang back a bit and wait on Durham? Was the market for DeRosa so great that we had to sign him right now?

durham is 36 and had a career year. he will most likely get BIG $. i wouldn't be suprised if someone gives him 4 years and 50 mil.

Well if this moves Theriot to the bench...Thatd be the start of having a solid bench

i'd rather have a solid starting lineup than a solid bench, though i'm sure you'd agree with that also.

Im going to say he is a super-utility guy and not as full time 2b. He played 60 games in Rf last year. Could be a good platoon partner for Jones. Derosa is a career .306/.367 against lefties. Expensive utilty guy but he could be useful.

This just smacks of a typical Hendry signing. Overpay for a guy that no one else values nearly as much as him. Makes no sense whatsoever (given the years/$$$)

I don't think BABIP is as "lucky" of a statistic as some people would have you believe.

I don't understand the gripe. 4 million a year is the market for a veteran 2nd baseman with average numbers.

Coulda saved the $4 M and added a bit more for a guy like Durham or Loretta.

You don't think the difference is going to so to Soriano or pitchers?

It might, but I think that in the end, the Cubs won't be able to afford Soriano.

Especially if they keep throwing multi-year multi-million dollar contracts at mediocre utility men that are coming off career years at age 31. Once again, it appears that Hendry was bidding against himself. Can you imagine another team paying $12 million? Or even $8 million?

As has been discussed too many times here - Jim Hendry is a terrible general manager. But the defining flaw of his tenure of his utter ability to understand replacement value and his attendant insistence upon significantly overpaying for mediocrity. Time and time and time again, Hendry has given multi-year, multi-million dollar contracts to players that aren't much better than replacement level. As an example, can anyone actually say with an ounce of confidence that Mark DeRosa will perform better in 2007 than Ryan Theriot would have? I can't. Yet, we're paying an excess $3.5 million per year to have DeRosa.

It's particularly frustrating when the Cubs then claim they can't afford Carlos Beltran or J.D. Drew or [insert actual difference-maker here].
