Im going to say he is a super-utility guy and not as full time 2b. He played 60 games in Rf last year. Could be a good platoon partner for Jones. Derosa is a career .306/.367 against lefties. Expensive utilty guy but he could be useful.

I like that he can play 6 positions. I'm not thrilled, however, by his .331 career OBP.

I'm not convinced he's going to be the full-time second baseman either. He could be the platoon partner, he could be a utility guy, he could get some time at second. It's possible he is the full-time starter at second, but there are several other possibilites as well. I expect Hendry to come out and say that he will be given a chance at second regardless though-no reason to shut that down at this point, and plus if he really is a platoon partner for Jacque this will slide by the radar and not cause a PR problem with him right now.

Well if this moves Theriot to the bench...Thatd be the start of having a solid bench

i'd rather have a solid starting lineup than a solid bench, though i'm sure you'd agree with that also.

I think DeRosa is solid just nothing great

He had a 59 OPS+ in 2004. Nobody who is solid puts up the numbers he put up from 2003-2005. He's inconsistent, if nothing else. He's capable of mediocrity, but doesn't repeat it.

This just smacks of a typical Hendry signing. Overpay for a guy that no one else values nearly as much as him. Makes no sense whatsoever (given the years/$$$)

There were numerous articles over the last few weeks predicting DeRosa would get a deal like this from whatever team he would sign for, so I don't think it's very accurate to think the Cubs were the only team interested, bidding against themselves.

i believe he's a platoon player. over the last three seasons, he's played 48 total games at 2B, 34 games at SS and 85 games in RF. hendry isn't the starpest tool in the shed, but i can't see him signing a player to a deal like that and have him play 2B straight out the box when he's only played 48 games in that position over the past three seasons. even if he's platooning with jacque in RF against lefties, that's one hell of an expensive role player.

I don't recall any such articles, do you have a link to any of them?

I don't like that he can play 6 positions. It's a worthless trait. Macias could play 6 positions, Bynum probably could do. Guys who play lots of positions, but aren't good at any of them, are not valuable.

If he's a starting 2B, it's a huge risk for a crap player that has never been a starting 2B.

If he's a utility guy, it's an absurd contract for a guy who can't even produce much in limited duty.

he does pummel lefties though. as a platoon partner and bench player, he isn't a terrible option. as a starter, he is awful. if you pair him with durham and platoon jones, this could be a good move.

Why 3 years? Was there really a market out there for him that they had to go 3 years?

When they come out of the organizational meetings with their eye on somebody, they do whatever they can to tie him up quickly.

Too bad the silly goofs never put their eye on anybody who can help the team get better.

DeRosa batted .200 in his final 100 at bats last year with 1 HR..... way to overpay him Hendry

Since when is a player's last 100 at bats an effective way to judge how much he should be making?

I think this move might not be that bad if the proper moves are made from here on out. DeRosa can help a team in the right role.

I just meant hes overall being overpaid.. For a guy whos only hit more than 10 HR's once in his career, career .331 OBP.... Hes gettin to many years and money

That's an interesting point-what if this opens up some options? I mean, what happens if they now feel they can sign Durham or Drew, knowing that they will be covered if they go down? There are many ways they can go with this signing, and I have no idea which one they will choose.

I think this is a safety net for potentially moving Jones before you sign/trade for his replacement so that the FA/trading team can't hold Hendry hostage.

Ideally DeRosa has a small part on this team. And he's better than macias/neifi.

Just run a search on the internet. Here's the one I remember from earlier this week. I can't begin to recall the specific news paper web sites from the daily blogosphere bouncing.

Olney earlier in the week
