You know what this is.... maybe you've heard this one before.....its a chocolate covered turd. We can dress this up and hide all its flaws as much as we want, but its still a turd. If it wasnt so much money it wouldnt be such a big turd to pour some chocolate on. We got a lot work to do to cover it up and much good work and rational is being done here to cover it up. We better hope Lou can polish this thing real good to not expose its flaws and let it crack open and show the world what its true identitiy inside really is. At least this turd unlike Neifi and Macias gives us something to work with, those were turds you just couldnt cover with chocolate.

If we paid him 2 million, we wouldn't have gotten him. I'm not sure if that's what we would have wanted at that point, but he wasn't coming here for 2 million dollars.

Then I'd live with missing out on him. He made $675k last year. He would have taken $2m, because I cannot imagine another team giving him more per.

I think the Phillies would have easily paid him more than 2 per. They were looking at him to fill a starting spot and had already expressed great iinterest in him.

Then good for the Phillies. Let them overpay for a utility IF.

Let's be clear: We didn't overpay for JD Drew or Barry Zito or someone who's actually good. We overpaid for a player who's somewhere between Mark Grudzielanek and Neifi Perez.

I would agree that the contract is over what I would have paid him-but really all the contracts together so far, we're still under what we were projecting budget-wise going into getting out impact SP and bats. Let's see if we actually get those-that will tell the tale or not if this is a good offseason, not this signing.

Every little counts when you are trying to sign a top tier FA.

Bloated contracts list:

Izturis

DeRosa

Rusch

Dempster

We finally sign a platoon partner for Jones who can also help out in other places, and people are mad?

If I was a betting man, I would say that DeRosa has been signed as our 2B instead of Jones' platoon partner.

hoops,

You've actually made me feel a bit better about the signing. I'm now banking on the fact that Piniella is smarter than Dusty and understands the term 'platoon'.

Why pay a guy 4 million dollars per year to be a partime player. Even if he does platoon it makes Hendry twice the bad GM, first for giving Jones the money he did and then for giving Derosa the money.

Put those two salaries together and add Rusch's slaray and the Cubs could probably get close to signing Drew.

Hoops analysis was to suggest you can get better than Drew's production out of a platoon for less money than what it would take to get Drew. I think DeRosa will get some time this way, but he will probably get another 200 ABs in a super-utility role, primarily at 2B.

I'm saying that's what I would do with the power of hindsight. If I used foresight, I wouldn't have signed Jones in the first place. I have no clue as to how Lou and Jim view De Rosa yet. We'll know more when Mr. Miles covers the story and we can read his report and Hendry's quotes in tomorrow's Daily Herald (shameless plug on behalf of our friend Mr. Miles).

I'm fairly certain that you're right. I don't see Hendry being much of a guy that would platoon players on a daily basis.

That's not Hendry's job. That Piniella's job.

I'm not happy, i'm not ready to throw the toys out the pram just yet, i do have a question though-why not Lugo or Durham? What about the idea of Derosa playing ss instantly upping the production of that position by god knows what, then sign durham trade 'Izzy' and Cedeno for a bag of balls how's that sound?? We then lose izturis salary and have replaced him with better production.

Hoops analysis, although laudable, is based on two career years from two guys taking two roster spots who, if they have career years again, might equal the average production of Drew who only takes up one roster spot.

Actually I wasn't comparing this to Drew at all. I was merely suggesting that if used as a true platoon, nothing more nothing less, the Cubs could get decent production from RF for a combined $9.67M.

The only answer I can think of is that Lugo and Durham will both cost 9+ million, and Hendry is not looking to spend that much on a 2B, with needs at SP and CF.

Now getting rid of Izturis would be an excellent move. I don't see Hendry doing that seeing how important it is for him to have players that can catch the ball though.

While it is Piniella's job to fill the lineup card, I really can't see him platooning Jones and DeRosa. Plus, it is Hendry's job to sign and trade players, and I'm pretty sure that this is Hendry's 2nd baseman.

Sorry, somebody else interjected Drew, and I just used his name as the representative of 10+ million RF production available.

I'm no huge fan of this signing, but there is no way paying Ray Durham more money, at an older age, also coming off a career year, was any better an idea.

Exactly why people are in an uproar about this. This guy is not a starting position player, he's a suber sub at best and thats putting a nice spin on it. He should not get the playing time that Theriot should get.

Unless Piniella comes out and publicly states that hes a platoon player for the team (he won't specifically name Jones) and a rare starter, then I cannot fathom why this guy is on this team let alone being paid what he will be.

Problem with the platoon is that we're not going to see 33% LHP, which means the total production is going to come down from that platoon. Even moreso considering Jones had a career year v. RHP, and will likely be in the .830-.850 OPS range against them. Furthermore, if DeRosa is platooning in RF AND getting 200 AB's elsewhere, then he's likely getting them against RHP, and he can't hit RHP to save his life.

Durham is so vastly superior to DeRosa it's not even worth a comparison. Durham regressing from a career year still puts up a .350+ OBP. DeRosa regressing from a career year maybe gives you .320.

I wouldn't have a real problem with spending $4 million on an actual "super" sub. The problem is this guy isn't super. He's been as bad as Neifi and Macias at times in his career. If he was a regular 100 OPS+ guy, who routinely put up an 800 OPS in limited playing time, fine, that player can help the team. DaRosa has not done that, and at his age, with his history, he's not a good bet to do it for the next 3 years (or even 1/2 years).

I looked at Juan Pierre's numbers from 2006 since he started every game. 64% of his at bats were against righties, 36% against lefties.
