Have to agree with rotoworld: $4.3M per year is a lot of dough for someone you can only use vs. lefties. This looks like Hendry's classic habit of paying top dollar for role players.

I wish I was a role player!

I wonder if Goldeneye counts. I mean, I sorta played a role player when I was Xenia in all those multi player levels and kicked all levels of butt.

Sigh...I thought the days of Neifi contracts were over. I wonder if the Tigers may need Derosa come July next year?

havent read all of the pages but i am curious why evryone takes derosa's stats from last year and calls them a fluke but when you talk about theriot you think he can produce at the same level he did last year for a small amount of time. without looking i am pretty sure last year was a career year for theriot compared to his minor league stats.

I'm no huge fan of this signing, but there is no way paying Ray Durham more money, at an older age, also coming off a career year, was any better an idea.

Agreed.

Coulda gone after Iwamura. Could go after Loretta instead, who'll be cheaper than Durham.

After the Cedeno disaster last year I'm surprised so many people are ready to hand hand the keys to Theriot, when Ronny's numbers in limited action in 05 were alot like Theriot's numbers in 06. I don't think Hendry wants to risk a similar situation in a lineup with so many questions, and DeRosa is a safer bet. I agree he paid too much, but its not a terrible move.

Theriot will certainly regress, but he's young enough to be learning still. Derosa will be 32 next February. He's not going to get any better.

I don't think anyone's saying that Theriot is going to reproduce his 900+ OPS from this year. However, his minor league numbers point to him being able to get on base some, which is obviously a valuable skill. DeRosa's past doesn't have any of that promise.

Oh cripes, and his BABIP was .348 last year too.

So you're saying he'll be able to keep that up, right? :D

I don't think BABIP is as "lucky" of a statistic as some people would have you believe.

Prove it

Derosa in the trib....

DeRosa came up as a shortstop. He played mostly third base for Texas in 2006 and has played a lot of outfield during his career. He said second base is the position he most wanted to play.

"I just feel more comfortable there,'' he said. "It's a position I felt comfortable playing in Texas.''

That's it i'm done, pretty clear he's been promised 2B so thats him and i can't hit izturis down the middle. Don't think an OF ruth ,Aaron and Ted/Billy Williams could save that IF. Is Glendon retiring or what?? cos at least thats him and perez gone. I'm guessing he will retire as hendry is already paying out for mediocre replacements.

Anyone upset with this signing and in favor of signing Soriano is a hypocrite. DeRosa is Soriano on a lesser scale.

On a really, really, really, lesser, lesser, lesser scale.

That a pretty signifigantly lesser scale, then.

A safer bet would be Lugo, Durham, Giles not DeRosa.

well i would argue that gary matthews jr sure got a whole lot better with consistent playing time and he will cash in this year, isn't he like 31 or 32? anyways i agree derosa got a little more then i would like but the beauty is when you have a $115 mil payroll you can go a little higher to get guys, i don't want to hear that he might cost us soriano or drew.. if hendry wants them a few extra million wont stop him. i would also be willing to bet that durham and loretta get more than derosa so you cant say that derosa cost us drew becasue many of you are wanting both durham and drew.

What the hell is this signing? $4.3 million for 3 years for what? A bench player? A second baseman that you don't need? An OFer? Is this the answer to the Cubs OF problems? Last year it was Neifi, Rusch, and Jones. This years "trifecta" is going to be Derosa and who?

This makes no sense to me.

wow I would have rather had Durahm,Loretta,Soranio,Theriot, Nomar anyone but overpying for Derosa and before any of those other guys inking anywhere is just weird.

I haven't read through it all yet, but does this play out as far as Cedeno, Theriot and Izzy are concerned? Obviously it makes one or two of them expendable, but does it hurt or help Hendry's chances of moving them?

I don't really understand what point you are trying to make with this. I am pretty sure most people here would also be against signing Lil Sarge.
