Face it guys...whoever it was at fault the fact remains, Corey wasn't going to produce in Chicago. Alot of people take that SMALL sample size in 2003, I believe, and assume he could do that over a full season. Yet...he was given two full season to replicate, and he couldn't. That is fact. I seriously doubt he keeps pace with his current numbers. In fact, I'm going to say his ave/obp will be similar to Pierre's before the yr is out.

I notice you don't say anything about power there. If Corey can have the same ave/obp as Pierre, hits for more power and is as disruptive (for however much that matters) on the bases -- Corey is then more productive, cheaper and we'd still have Nolasco & Pinto.

He had 329 ABs in 2003, more than half of a season's worth. But also remember that his OPS topped out around .820 as late as mid-September in 2004.

Why you people are second guessing the deal to me dosent make any sense.

what about those who first-guessed the deal?

ssshhh!

I don't think its fair to say (if you didn't last year-if you did, that's fair game) that Patterson shouldn't have been dealt.

HOWEVER, I think the Patterson situation should certainly be part of a larger discussion as to the organization's ability to get players, especially young players, to perform.

There's only so many times you can say "how come everybody leaves here and does so well" before you have to question what's going on here that is making them not succeed.

I firmly believe that there's no way that Patterson would be putting up the numbers he has with the Cubs this year. Not with this coaching staff. I don't think there was much of a shot of him succeeding with this organization as it currently stands.

BTW, Patterson stole his 19th base tonight. 1 behind the ML lead. He's on pace for a 30/30 season (actually 30/60).

I agree. He was the whipping boy last year.

It's a shame, but I am happy for Corey.

Why must I hate the team I love?

I don't know why people will blame the coaches and Baker alone for Patterson's lack of success here. I think you have to place equal blame on the fans who constantly booed him. I blame them, as well, but I have to blame Corey for not being mentally tough enough to not let that affect him. He would've been booed his first plate appearance at Wrigley and it would've likely been 2005 all over again.

Continued success to you, Corey.

Heh, I was pretty adamant in my disgust at the Wrigley crowd last season (along with Corey and the coaches).

It's pretty hard to tell what kind of an effect that had and how he responded to it. It certainly didn't help, but I don't know if it was a significant contributor.

Lets not boo neifi either! He's HUSTLING on those grounders to second! Pierre, too.

SMALL? It was a smidge over a half season. He produced that for 5 months in 2004 too - while coming back quicker than anticipated from an injury. And whether or not Corey has a similar avg/obp to Pierre, he'll be well ahead of Juan in the slugging department. And as Tim pointed out, all while being much cheaper than Juan and not costing the Cubs three solid young pitchers.

Ehh, probably shouldn't get into that in this thread.

Given the same coaches were here, what makes you think any adjustments would be made with him and he'd be performing like he is away from Chicago?

Do they boo Neifi? I don't notice that much, even though he deserves as much as anyone.

But the booing of Patterson reached disgusting proportions last year. He deserved to be booed over his plate discipline, but it just got to be ridiculous. He was clearly the team lightning rod.

The booing was definitely audible tonight.

I'm not certain the coaches had a lot to do with him. They may not have helped much, but I don't think they were the sole reason for his disappointing time in Chicago. Corey was always an overaggressive hitter with poor discipline--- that's the Cubs philosophy even in the minor league system, so for him, being in the Cub organization should have been heaven. I still think he was rushed through the system, though.

I didn't understand your comment about booing Pierre and Perez. Are you comparing vets to a young guy who was rushed through the system? Plus, offensively, Perez sucks and he has for a while, and Pierre now is sucking for the third straight year. I don't understand your comparison when you say fans shouldn't boo those two, either.

From spring training 2005, though, it was about trying to sacrifice power for the sake of putting the ball in play. That's what Hendry was looking for in a center fielder/leadoff hitter.

My initial post with regards to booing was sarcasm. I'm a strong proponent of booing. Others aren't. Its simple.
