I'd want Zito first and foremost, then if you could get Soriano and either Schmidt or Mulder without compromising a long term deal for Z, I think even if the Cubs did nothing else, they'd be a contender next year. I agree that 2 big signings makes them contenders. Cuban needs to fire MacPhail on day 1, and get rid of the "sign a bunch of $3-9 million second/third tier free agent's" philosophy.

decided you couldn't win the 'told you so' game w/ pierre, so you've moved on the jones, eh? i never predicted jones would be nearly this good. just nice to see something work out for a change. i'm rooting for this team to go on a long winning streak.

wants to push the budget to $130 million next year? Looks like the Cubs could be sold, so this is more plausible now. Basically, he'd take the same approach as the Yankees & the Red Sox by buying his way to a title via getting the best free agents. With Maddux, Wood & Pierre coming off the books, the Cubs would have lots of money to play with. Who would you want him to sign?? Schmidt & Soriano would be at the top of my list. Cubs would probably have enough for Mulder too. That depends on how Prior, Guzman and Marmol perform. It would be nice to get another left-handed bat, but there aren't many available...

yep, most significant thing taken from this is that the likelihood of the cubs being sold could be quite high. would love to see cuban come in and spend $140 million next year.

Jones came into tonight's game tied for 3rd amongst NL RF's in OPS @ .885. Hawpe's #1 w/ .980, Abreu's #2 w/ .963 and Drew was tied for 3rd. Jones' ops will go up w/ his 2-4 tonight. GO JOCK! :D

they have a month & a half to negotiate a trade. any good negotiator starts high and works from there. I don't fault them for asking, but they have to understand that his value goes down as the season progresses, unless you get multiple teams bidding on him. hmmmm, i always thought value was highest right before the deadline when many teams are desperate to deal. of course, wilson could go into a slump, so they are gambling..

First of all, the only people who have any loyalty to a brand (or, in this case, team) are their customers (or, in this case, fans). Kerry is like any other worker - he'll be there for the company when and if it's in his best interests, and vice versa. I predict that Wood gets a two-year deal from a team with a healthy payroll next year - provided the option doesn't get exercised. He can spend year one rehabbing to his arm's content (provided he's not physically done), and build up for a hunky three-year-contract in year number two. i have a feeling you'll be right. if he goes to an NL team, I hope Cubs fans litter him w/ boos when he return to wrigley and shuts the cubs out.

Honestly, if we are ignoring everything else and just look at what would be "fair" to the Cubs, he should get the same deal Grissom got this year if he resigns with us. well, i assume he'll look decent out of the pen when he returns. hence the $3 million base..

if kerry has any loyalty to the cubs and a conscious (he's been paid a ton w/ very little in return), he'll pitch out of the pen the remainder of the season and agree to an incentive laden 1 year deal, w/ a base of $3 million where he can make up to $8 million. it may not be a bad option. those 3 year offers may start drying up. turn him into smoltz/eckersley/gagne. just don't let him get a hold of the whatever substance gagne took.

this would be kerry's wisest move, but kerry's not the brightest guy, so i'm not getting my hopes up. these texans are real stubborn.

If we are going to go with young arms next year I for one hope we sign Maddux again for next year. I think he keeps the kids stable. maddux is about done. deal him off to a contender for a prospect and let him finish out his great career in a pennant chase. i proposed maddux, williamson & hill for joel guzman in the transaction forum.

Last year in the pen he was still pitching 97-98 MPH. This year he's been at around 90-91. That's not going to cut it in the pen. i thought he was throwing it 94-95 a few outings ago?? since he's starting, he may be trying to conserve himself. put him in the pen and he can air it out for an inning. He was having trouble pitching 90 in his last start. yep, cause his arm's shot from longer outings.

hopefully they keep starting Guzman for the rest of the year. In fact keep starting Guzman and Hill in place of Wood and Rusch. We have to see what we have for enxt year and the future. looks like he'll have plenty of opportunity.. either wood or prior will be out from here on.

seriously, bring him back as a reliever when he returns. get something for this bum in a trade. he looked good out of the pen last year. perhaps his arm only has 30-40 pitches per outing left in it.

right now the cubs are better off w/ guzman starting over wood.
